This sounds like an interesting challenge...

Somewhere in a darker corner of my collection I find this beauty (not
made by me):

                __ __
               / V \
              / \
             / \
            (_ _ _ _)
              | \_ _/ |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
        _____ | | | | ______
       /, , ,\| |/ , ,\
      / , , ` , , \
     / , , ` ` , \
     \ ` ` ` /
      \ ' ` ' , , , /
       \__________/\__________/

And added a pair of sunglasses:

             ____ ____
            '# ##`V'# ##`
            |#####_#####|
             `###/ \###'
            (_ _ _ _)
              | \_ _/ |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
              | | | |
        _____ | | | | ______
       /, , ,\| |/ , ,\
      / , , ` , , \
     / , , ` ` , \
     \ ` ` ` /
      \ ' ` ' , , , /
       \__________/\__________/

looks a bit silly.... maybe some talented artist will make a more
serious attempt... (though I doubt the request was very serious... How
to make it "Oriental"? I have no idea! :D )

Well, obviously I'm not :)

Maybe the difference is: "Occidental" *dorks* wolf down their french fries and
burger just using their hands; and "Oriental" *dorks* have developed
sophisticated tools to do the same :)

Hi Siu Ling,

Sorry about the fuzz... I hope this one is more appropriate:
(goofy haircut = intended; without it the *dork* turns out to be a *hunk*:)

in the States, a dork equals stupid, dumb, etc.

I don't know which part of the UK you're from Peter, but I've never heard
male genitals called a dork before, and I've been on this God-forsaken
island for nearly all my born days (I went to France once, oh, yeah and
the Isle of Man :) ).

Common euphemisms I've heard for it, are:
	Monkey
	Wodge
	Tackle
	Jock
	Lunchbox
	Hose
	Thing(y)
	Beast
	Organ
	Fireman
	Helmet
and even "Spitting Doll"

but not Dork

...and I'm sure I'm missing some euphemisms there.

And Finally: Apologies to those who find this thread has become rather
tasteless... :-S

Well, I live near Liverpool, but have heard this all over the UK.
Unfortunately, I know loads more nicknames for said wedding-tackle. But
as this newsgroup is read by some young people, I will not post them
here. Why do you call the UK 'God-forsaken' ? mind you, been to
Bradford,
and I must say that is one hovel of a place! - looks like some large
prehistoric beast has crawled around the area, with a series of
disappointing bowel movements.

Actually in my part of the NW US dork would have made the list of
euphemisms when I was much younger. But evidently since some kids
grow up calling people names without knowing what they mean, now you
see children scripted to use this word in TV shows. It always seemed
to refer to a person as that object though and usually not the object
itself and as opposed to calling someone a p***k was more like calling
them a really dumb oddball p***k or maybe a wanker.....

For those of you outside of the U.S., in American English --
especially nowadays in the computer age -- the term "dork" is
probably most commonly understood as a synonym for "nerd," which
means an unathletic, indoor couch-potato, four-eyed (i.e., wears
glasses), intellectually-inclined, "pointy-headed" computer
expert who plays chess or video games on the computer, is some-
where between five and 55 years old, who gets his jollies out of
hacking into the computers of the Pentagon or the NSA (No Such
Agency, as columnist Bill Safire calls it), and whose social life
consists of posting messages here in Cyberspace.

Another term is "geek." Perhaps "nerd" is what the original
poster meant when he used the term "dork." Let's hope so! Now,
hopefully, the bloody "dork" business can be laid to rest once
and for all. (Oops! Sorry! That's another instance where the
meaning of a word is different in American English than in British
English. In America the word "bloody" has no special significance
and isn't a swear-word as it is in England.)

And that seems to provide a segue for me to throw a bridge across
these linguistic waters. I've taken the liberty of making a few tiny
changes in Joan's wonderful suspension bridge. Here's my version:

Being in Ohio-- I knew what he meant by 'dork'-- aka nerd, geek, etc.
It has been enlightening to hear the UK words... but I do know how the
ocean makes differences with words... take my email name, for instance!
I know you UK'ers smirk when reading it... but it doesn't mean the same
over here in the US! :)

Anyhow, here is a repost of my nerd/nerdette couple-- made for an

Hmm. Even if they were, what's wrong with it? Get a life, or lose your
net access. I have the power.

I'd like to apologise for my previous post on this thread. I can't have
been thinking too clearly. I wish I had an excuse but I don't...

Every time I look at the post, I cringe and get rather embarrassed, as the
people in the same computer room as me would lay testament to. (They
are staring in this direction wondering why I've gone a rather bright
shade of crimson.) I've also noticed, by re-reading *this* post, that my
grasp of advanced English grammar is rapidly disappearing too...

I think I need to get out more... :|

Erk... :( ,

Which just goes to show, how terminology gets altered from one
generation
to the next. Dirk Taylor's reply confirms the original usage. Ok, so I'm
an old fart, but I don't need you kids telling me what a word means,
when I know it means one thing, when it used to mean another. This is a
bit like most music these days, that samples stuff from thirty or so
years ago. When I start singing along to the 'latest' club anthem, my 17
year-old daughter looks at me and says 'How come you know this?, it's
only just been released' - oh yeah!
Anyway, 'nuff of this dork stuff. I really enjoy looking into this site,
and seeing the creative offerings, some really imaginative stuff here,
wish I could do it so well.
