The Best way to make ASCII Art.

Do you want to produce quality ASCII art? Do you want to do it without all the
hassel of learning ASCII codes and trying to use a text editor? If any of this applies to
you then Russian Under Ware Inc.'s ASCIIART is the one for you. Don't be fooled by
imitators, there is only one original ASCIIART (there is another program called ASCIIART
that converts gif-->ASCII, but mine was first and despite my efforts the author would
not change the name). If it's not from Russian Under Ware Inc., then you don't need it.
ASCIIART provides a fully integrated program featuring all printable ASCII codes
and full mouse support. The REGISTERed version provides simple shapes, remappable ASCII
chart, magnified letters, enhanced cut & paste, handling of files in excess of 2 megabytes,
and MANY OTHER ADVANCED FEATURES. You can download a shareware version from:
http://www.tidalwave.net/~Shawg/ruw/games.html#asciiart
The shareware version is NOT TIME LIMITED. The shareware version does lack some of the
features and enhancements. If you are serious about ASCII art then ASCIIART is for you,
it may be the most useful program you can find. The cost of REGIST(E)Ration is a mere
$15!! With REGIST(E)Ration you get FREE LIFETIME SUPPORT! FREE UPGRADES AND
PATCHES, AND DISCOUNTS ON OTHER PRODUCTS. Also, REGISTERed users have the
opportunity to shape the future of the program. If you have any questions or need more
information email ru...@vt.edu or visit http://www.tidalwave/net~Shawg/ruw/
ASCIIART runs on MS-DOS 3.3 and higher and requires a mouse.

WTF's an ASCII code?
Does it mean that the target market involves people who have a hard

Even if they ment ANSI codes, they aren't that hard either.... (I've
written several programs capable of reading/writeing ANSI animations.)

I've got some really cool ones, and one that looks like it uses
hundereds of colors....

Unfortunately, many people do not have access to a list of ASCII codes (there are, after all, 256). Even I have a hard time remembering what they are. That is why I created ASCIIART. Using ASCIIART you can use the mouse and an ASCII pallette to "paint" your text pictures. A couple of years ago, I was working on a game called Quest ][ (http://www.tidalwave.net/~Shawg/ruw/games.html#quest2). I needed to design a dozen or so city maps. I elected to do it in text mode for various reasons. After making the initial maps using MS-DOS Editor, I decided to make a program that would aid in the design of future maps. The original program was rather small and simple. I continued to add to it, and then redesigned it and called it ASCIIART. The bottom line is this, don't knock it until you try it. Just because you like using a text editor and using the cryptic code structure doesn't mean that someone else does. What my program does is allow more people to be able to create good ASCII art. If you don't want to use it then don't. But don't assume that everyone else is obsessed with doing things the hard way. Tony. http://www.tidalwave.net/~Shawg/ruw/

When I am typing this answer I use the keys on my keyboard to enter the message. Somehow a program converts these keystrokes into characters according to a ASCII conversion that are send to you via the web. What I do know about this ASCII code is that a restricted set of characters will show the same on a large number of displays. The fun of the game we are communication about is that we enjoy each other by using these characters to make drawings. Since the drawings that are made with the above mentioned set show up the same I know that what I see on my terminal will look the same on other other terminals. It is like communicating with other people in a predefined language. If I use the vocabular that is agreed on I am shure the other participants will understand. I agree that this wil restrict me. Maybee I rather would like to tell you something in an other language because it brings it better to the point. Zoals je mischien wel zou kunnen begrijpen. But by using these other characters not all of the participants can see what I intended to show. Maybe your program makes it easier to generate a drawing but I am proud to show a drawing that I made without any drawing tool. I don't assume that everyone else is obsessed with doing things the hard way but I also don't think that I am using a criptic code structure. There are 128 ASCII codes, 256 Extended ASCII codes (including the 128 basic ones). On this group, only ASCII-art made with those basic 128 is acceptable, because art using Extended ASCII looks different on different people's machines (DOS/Mac/Unix/Whatever) Of the 128 basic characters, only those from 32 (space) to 127 (tilde) are visible, since the other ones are control codes, to which some programs may respond strangely: _________________________________________________________________________ |Oct | Dec | Hex | Disp | Symbol | Char Name | Keypress | |____|_____|_____|______|________|________________________|______________| |000 | 000 | 00 | none | NUL | Null | Ctrl-Shift-@ | |001 | 001 | 01 | ^A | SOH | Start of Header | Ctrl-A | |002 | 002 | 02 | ^B | STX | Start of Text | Ctrl-B | |003 | 003 | 03 | ^C | ETX | End of Text | Ctrl-C | |004 | 004 | 04 | ^D | EOT | End of Transmission | Ctrl-D | |005 | 005 | 05 | ^E | ENQ | Enquire | Ctrl-E | |006 | 006 | 06 | ^F | ACK | Acknowledge | Ctrl-F | |007 | 007 | 07 | ^G | BEL | Bell | Ctrl-G | |010 | 008 | 08 | ^H | BS | Back Space | Ctrl-H | |011 | 009 | 09 | ^I | HT | Horizontal Tab | Ctrl-I | |012 | 010 | 0A | ^J | LF | Line Feed | Ctrl-J | |013 | 011 | 0B | ^K | VT | Vertical Tab | Ctrl-K | |014 | 012 | 0C | ^L | FF | Form Feed | Ctrl-L | |015 | 013 | 0D | ^M | CR | Carriage Return | Ctrl-M | |016 | 014 | 0E | ^N | SO | Shift Out | Ctrl-N | |017 | 015 | 0F | ^O | SI | Shift In | Ctrl-O | |020 | 016 | 10 | ^P | DLE | (or DEL) Delete | Ctrl-P | |021 | 017 | 11 | ^Q | DC1 | Device Control 1 | Ctrl-Q | |022 | 018 | 12 | ^R | DC2 | Device Control 2 | Ctrl-R | |023 | 019 | 13 | ^S | DC3 | Device Control 3 | Ctrl-S | |024 | 020 | 14 | ^T | DC4 | Device Control 4 | Ctrl-T | |025 | 021 | 15 | ^U | NAK | Negative Acknowledge | Ctrl-U | |026 | 022 | 16 | ^V | SYN | Synchronize | Ctrl-V | |027 | 023 | 17 | ^W | ETB | End Transmission Block | Ctrl-W | |030 | 024 | 18 | ^X | CAN | Cancel | Ctrl-X | |031 | 025 | 19 | ^Y | EM | End of Medium | Ctrl-Y | |032 | 026 | 1A | ^Z | SUB | Substitute | Ctrl-Z | |033 | 026 | 1A | ^[ | ESC | Escape | Ctrl-[ | |034 | 026 | 1A | ^\ | FS | File Separator | Ctrl-\ | |035 | 026 | 1A | ^] | GS | Group Separator | Ctrl-] | |036 | 026 | 1A | ^^ | RS | Record Separator | Ctrl-Shift-^ | |037 | 026 | 1A | ^_ | US | Unit Separator | Ctrl-Shift-_ | |177 | 127 | 7F | ^? | DEL | Delete | DEL | |____|_____|_____|______|________|________________________|______________| > Even I have a hard time remembering what they are. Tony-- I have yet to see GOOD ASCII pictures from a program -- most of the pictures created that way need manual touching-up so that they look decent. I wouldn't say that people ought to be obsessed with doing things the hard way... My way is easy for ME. And it doesn't take that much time.... I can create a decent ASCII picture in about 15-20 minutes... compare that to a software-generated picture and add in the amount of time needed to make it look right... it would be awfully close. Why don't you post some pictures that you've made with your program? Show people what it can do... and if the pics are great, I'll gladly eat crow. -joan -- _______ `-----.\ _____, `---- \\ .-./.---` ,__`---. `-` '>---` joan stark .-. `,_.-. /`.-` spu...@juno.com <' ) ',___.' / \ " ASCII ART GALLERY: | / \ http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/7373/ \\_, \ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'--'\\~~~~~ ~~~jgs~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\\~~~~

it entirely with ASCIIART, and I did not touch it up with a text editor. If

I have been told that my program does not belong here because this
group is dedicated to using standard keyboard ASCII. I understand and
respect that but I feel obliged to defend my program before leaving. It has
been suggested that my program is "like all the others . . . needing to be
touched up with an editor." I submit that this is simply not the case. Even
if you want to use just the first 128 (or how ever many) ASCII codes, you can
remap the ASCII pallette so that it matches YOUR needs (remapping available

I think it would be nice if you asked the user b4 they start drawing if what they are drawing will ever be posted to the net and if so,restrict them to only using the standard ascii-art "ascii-codes" rather then let them run amok. They will get flamed for posting thier art if you dont and it wont look right to MOST others who see it. This is not some simple program that does simple stuff. I spent a lot of time on this thing. It has many features (including remapping the ASCII chart). I never intended to start such a ruckus. A couple of years ago I came to this newsgroup promoting the idea of my program. People here were VERY receptive. When I got my first unREGISTERed executable finished, I informed the people here. Many people went and tried it out. I wonder, what ever happened that turned this group from a nice, welcoming group into the cynical kind of group it is now. I have never even seen the FAQ. The group is called ASCII art. I thought that meant ASCII (all ASCII). When I began this thread, someone "Could" have just informed me of the problem and I would have understood. Instead I got a bunch of stupid posts doing anything from calling me names to simply laughing and then getting mad when I didn't go away. I submit, that my program CAN be useful even here. It is not limited to using ONLY extended ASCII, all the keys on the keyboard are present as well. If you aren't interested, then don't look at it. I am seriously considering removing the link to here from my web site. This used to be a welcoming area, now it is nothing but a bunch of angry cynics who hate anybody and anything new. Time for Aardy to give his images lecture again... <lecture> GIF is a file format for crisp, line art images that either have lots of solid color or edges that you don't want messed up. (Like text.) It is not a good format for photographs. GIF89a also supports animation and transparency. If you are converting a high or true color screenshot to GIF, in most cases, don't dither it. (In Paint Shop Pro, select Nearest Color.) JPEG is a file format for photography. It'll make the photo of your cat Muffy look nifty for a lot less disk space then most other formats. However, it adds compression "artifacts" to images with crisp edges. (Like most screenshots.) If you are converting a dithered image to JPEG, pull the following filters on it to make it look nice: Guassian Blur (or Blur More) , then an Unsharpen Mask. (Play with the clipping and percentage settings for best results.) BMP is an uncompressed format. For the purposes of Usenet and the Internet, it's garbage. Macs and Unix systems basically can't read them, and since they have no compression whatsoever, they take longer than forever to download. If for some reason you have a true color image that you don't want to convert to PNG or TIFF, yet maintain this quality, you _could_ use this format on _your own computer_... but don't even think about uploading it. TIFF is a format typically used for high-end publishing. It can be compressed in several ways... Packbits, which is like JPEG in that it adds artifacts in exchange for file size, or LZW, which is like GIF... it reads all of the pixels in a row that are the same and writes them as one byte. You can also save TIFFs as Uncompressed. For most situations, not a good format for Usenet... maybe for distributing clipart via the Net. PNG is a format that's very similar to a TIFF saved with LZW. However, it also allows an alpha channel (read: 256 levels of transparency) ... but not much supports it yet. For now, stick with GIF or JPEG... maybe TIFF. </lecture> On a side note, by taking your JPEG and converting it to a GIF, it went down to 15,487 bytes file size. :) That's a lot off 95K. If GeoCities lets me upload it, you can get the GIFed version at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lab/2672/barn.gif Later, -- ._________________________________________________________________. | ._______. | | __ __ o \| Ant | | | / \/\/ \/ ; KRUNCH; | | \__/\/\__/\o | .*@., | | |. . . . . . . . . . . . . . /\ . ./\ rdv .@*. | \=/ | | | aka Turret __ __ |_______| | | ___ ____ ________/ / _____ _____/ /_____ | | / _ `/ _ `/ __/ _ /'|/ / _ `/ __/ '_/ _ \ | | \_,_/\_,_/_/ \_,_/|___/\_,_/_/ /_/\_\\___/ | | http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lab/2672/index.html | |_________________________________________________________________| Rex Dean Kerr III wrote in message <6c228q$hjm$1...@hubble.csuchico.edu>... >In article <kpn...@as2511-26.sl015.cns.vt.edu>, >Tony Relyea <are...@vt.edu> wrote: >> You wanted an example? I've got an old laptop myself, and it's always handy to have an ASCII chart, unfortunately, that chart is DOS only. > I never intended to start such a ruckus. I thought I did inform you of the problem, I didn't call you names or laugh at you, I most certainly didn't flame you. This group is by far the nicest I know on all usenet. I'm not suprised there is interest in your program from DOS users, since it's a nice program. Instead I got a bunch of stupid posts doing anything from >calling me names to simply laughing and then getting mad when I didn't go >away. I've been a regular on alt.ascii-art since the newsgroup was created in September 1993. I vaguely remember mention of such a program way back but if you had at that time told the readers here about your intention to use the Extended Character Set above Decimal 127 and class it as ASCII and acceptable for ASCII ART you would have got the response you have got now. Ascii Art and the text basis of transmission of data on the Net require that only the Decimal characters 32 to 126 be used. People who use your program will post their creations to newsgroups and get flamed to hell for using the Extended Character Set involving the ALT key on the keyboard...their defence will be that they purchased and used Relyea's Program that said it was OK. _THEN_ everyone can flame you, the author, to a burnt and smoking black cinder. *8-) And you say you have never seen the Ascii Art FAQ ? Why not ? It was posted often enough to alt.ascii-art and there have been plenty of pointers to the FAQ. Have you even read the newest version of the FAQ ? If not why not ? I really cannot sympathize with your posting here because you have clearly not done your homwork by studying the protocols and requirements of the Net or the newsgroups; have not read FAQs but simply gone ahead regardless and produced a program to make Ascii Art. > This used to be a welcoming area, now it is nothing but a bunch of > angry cynics who hate anybody and anything new. I have been here all the time and I know that that is simply not true. The early readers were sticklers for adherence to etiquette and protocols. I am convinced that you failed to state your intention of using Extended Characters in your previous visit to this newsgroup when you first announced your projected program for Ascii Art. Perhaps a search of the old archives of Dejanews still carry your old postings here ? Finally, I am very surprised that you have not been a regular reader of the alt.ascii-art newsgroup if you are authoring programs which will produce material that will be posted here eventually. Bye,
I'm a bit of a lurker here, and I don't get what you guys keep flaming this guy for! This guy makes a program to generate ASCII Art, and just HAPPENS to include the extended character set in it, that does NOT have to be used, and you go off the wall on him. When I first saw this group, I was impressed at how helpful and receptive you were, but after seeing this, well, I'm not so sure. One point you all have to realize here, and I speak as a programmer and someone who has had his programs downloaded, people are not going to download his program EXCLUSIVELY for making pictures to post here. They will make them to put on BBSes, FTP sites, Web pages, etc. where extended Ascii is acceptable. I didn't want to get involved, but you guys are acting very petty here... -- _____ _ ___ Handler of "Playboy" Ronnie D | __ \ ___ ___ ___ |_| ___ | \ #32 in the 1997 RSPWF 200 | <| _ | | || || -_| | -- | http://ronnie.home.ml.org |__|__||___|_|_|_|_||_||___| |___/ e-Wrestler par excellence

Perhaps that's why you did get responses as you did regarding ASCII and non-ASCII characters.. I'm one of those who assumed that you had read the FAQ and decided to post anyways. > Instead I got a bunch of stupid posts doing anything from >calling me names to simply laughing and then getting mad when I didn't go >away. Well, I was the laughing one... forgive me, I misunderstood what you were saying... and as for the ASCII/non-ASCII thing- they have their places -- non-ASCII should not be posted on the net. And since you seem to know this and will be adding this info to your program, I don't see a conflict. Well, despite my better judgment I have decided to post another article. I wish to explain some more things and set some stuff straight. First of all, I indicated earlier that I had never even SEEN the FAQ. How am I expected to read it if I can't see it. If it has been posted here then my news server must have deleted it. Second of all, I did not design my program for use in this group, I just thought that I might find a customer or two lurking in here. I designed it originally for personal use and then decided that there *may* be a market for it. I have found some people who really do like using it. I have also found those who do not. Such is life in the programmer's world. Third of all, it is true that someone told me early on the difference between regular ASCII and extended ASCII. However, by that time I had received enough non-constructive posts insulting my program and me as a programmer that I was determined to defend my program. As for displaying extended ASCII, I am not sure about UNIX, but in OS/2 (and probably windoze) simply picking the proper font will display it. DOS does it automatically. I will also be posting another rendition of the "Barn" doen is (AFAIK) "normal" ASCII--ie no extended. This barn was also done using my program and was not touched up with a text editor. Bottom line, as I have said before. This is not for everyone. I understand that some people enjoy doing things a certain way and don't like new stuff (eg. I prefer to use an enhanced text editor to create web pages. I hate WYSIWYG editors). However, realize that not all people are like you. There may be some who want a mouse interface to text art. For anyone who fits this description, ASCIIart may be for you (http://www.tidalwave.net/~Shawg/ruw/games.html#asciiart). In closing, I am giving this group another chance. Perhaps I was too harsh to lump everyone into a single category. Tony Relyea . . Another satisfied OS/2 user. -- Proudly making DOS software sinc 1994. Proudly making OS/2 software since 1997. MS Word adding DTP functions doesn't do this sort of thing to other people's computers: A normal xterm window: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/techstuff/what_an_xterm_window_should_look_like.gif An xterm window after somebody has written some control code to it: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/techstuff/what_a_control_code_can_do.gif Please read the warning about control codes that Colin posts here, and understand that it is not just paranoia, there is grim experience of crashed and generally fucked up computers behind that post! > So get a grip and realize that there is NOTHING wrong > with making a program that can do art for both ASCII and ANSI displays. > Alt.ascii-art is NOT, by a longshot, the only place computer art is used. > > And the barn was decent... > Oh, sure, it didn't crash _my_ computer, _this_ time, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about it. But it doesn't reduce the functionality of the program A) > outside of this newsgroup and B) if only regular Ascii is used. A) I don't see how it being useful outside of this newsgroup defends it being advertised here. Why not advertise your steaming hot sex site, updated daily, while you're at it? or a quick and easy way to get rich? or the only working method to lose weight while still eating like a horse? or a magic perfume that will attract women to you like sugar attracts flies? If it is off-topic for the group then don't post it to the group. "Extended ascii" is off-topic for this group. B) Then make a "pure ascii" version of it and advertise _that_ here. A program that has both the "pure" ascii and some MS specific "extended" ascii will only confuse newbies and non-tech people. I can understand how such functionality can be very tempting to somebody who doesn't understand the consequences of using it (an example is all those WebTV people with "html" sigs... that look like _crap_ to everybody who isn't a WebTV user...). The inevitable result of that is that it will cause problems for other, innocent, people who _will_ flame you for doing BAD things to their computers. -- _ _ __ ___.--'_`. __ __ _ .'_`--.___ __ ( _`.'. - 'o` ) \ \ / /__ _ _ ___ _ _ (_)__ __ _ ( 'o` - .`.'_ ) _\.'_' _.-' \ V / -_) '_/ _ \ ' \| / _/ _` | `-._ `_`./_ ( \`. ) //\` \_/\___|_| \___/_||_|_\__\__,_| '/\\ ( .'/ ) \_`-'`---'\\__, ,__//`---'`-'_/ \` `-\ uggc://jjj.yhqq.yhgu.fr/hfref/ix/ /-' '/ ` _____________________ r93...@fz.yhgu.fr ____________________ ' LIKE MY SIG? It's pretty funny that this text image consists strictly of only the forbidden characters. It's either control codes or extended characters. Nothing inbetween :) Also, after viewing, it's safe to assume that this rather flat, two dimensional imagery will not be replacing the human ASCII artist any time soon :) %> > Most stuff I have seen on BBSs is pure ANSI not Ascii. %> %> Exactly.
