Rude folks, indeed.....

Hey folks,
I recently got some invites in the e-type mail to
"chat" on IRC. I used to use that program some, back when
my sister and her husband were stationed in Korea. It
were cheaper than the telephone, ect.. Anyways,
I have turned on IRC a few times over the last couple of
weeks. They have all these "color" channels, now. They
make popups (those things are ascii or extended-character
pix that "play" on IRC, which are internet relay chat).
Some of those folks are pretty nice. They got me updates
to that chat program I was usin', and sent me this text-
player thing that will let you select an ascii text play
on IRC. They even sent me this tiny program that "colors"
ascii for use on IRC (it makes a mess of the pix, with color
codes, ect.).
I realize most of you know about this stuff, but some don't,
so I alreddy 'splained it.
A lot of them folks on IRC is polite... although I will add
that many don't care for my risque' cartoons, and you
can't hardly play a strip, on account of it are too long
for them (ever heared of anythin' so silly? Made me feel
like I was submittin' real cartoons to some magazine editor,
tellin' me ta "Make it shorter". Ridiculocust. Who wouldn't
want to read a 1,700-line cartoon by me? And what else haff
they got to do, anyways?). Anyway, you cain't stay in SOME
of them color or rainbow channels fer long, because sumbody
will start playin' a pix with no credits, or have THIER OWN
"credits". For instance, I thought Joan made this:

Well, it turns out I were wrong; Joan didn't make that. Some
broad who calls hersel'f "maryemd" made that pix. 'Cept she
added a little hat, and a dog of Joan's but isn't, becuze
"maryemd" has "made" it. Including IRC-color, of course.
This broad even keeps a web page, which I ain't seen. You kin
imagine what is on that.
Haley-Jane must also be confused, becuz she didn't make this 'un:

I just reposted that helio-chopter, on account of I like it. It ain't
got nutthin' to do with this here e-type newsgroup post. Anyway, Haley
prob'ly didn't make it, either. Like enuff, it were made by sum guy
named "Cybergeek", or "Chatdick". Who knows? Maybe Mad Dog really made
it.
Stop in on the ChatNet IRC network, if you have an IRC program, and have
the stomach. Or several others.... you can find them yourself, if you
know anything about "chat". There seem to be several places to find the
aktual "are-teests" of many of these pix, that peeple like Haley-Jane
claims SHE made... What a wench.
Doan git me wrong... There is some nice folks out there, who do color
pix copied from this newsgroup, or any number of websites. I even git
email from IRC-enthusiasts, who ask fer a pix or two, or haff a
ree-quest. I doan mind, at all. Sometimes I like makin' them a pix.
Usual, I don't, because I make cartoons... or try to... Hell, I do,
and screw you if you don't like 'em. But I have done a few e-type
mail requests.... more than I like to admit to. Some of you answer
a LOT of IRC-related requests. I'm sure most of your correspondents
are thrilled to leave your pix alone when they color them...
We been through all this afore. Y'all know that some of my views concernin'
credits is slightly different. Mostly in the ree-spect that I wouldn't ask
folks to keep initials on an e-type mail signature pic; who wants somebody
else's name on their e-comms? But that's my deal, and I don't make a lot
of signasutures.
Otherwise, I think folks ought to git credit fer thier pix. It's about all
you're going to git, anyway -- s'not like you make tons of money for typing
a picture. Then along comes some yahoo, who copies your little pic, and
colors it, and plays it on IRC, and sends it around to lots of other folks
on IRC, and from there it ends up ah goin' who knows where, and all the while,
they claim, "I made this". Yah.... sure.
Consider this. My brother had a collector's coloring book published. I'm
sure there were people who actually colored it. Did that make them the
artists of the artwork?... Hardly.
You IRC people reading this; Krogg done related the three levels of etiquette
on this here issue:
Level 1 --- including author's credit on the pix; most polite approach.
Level 2 --- not including author's credit on the pix; less polite approach.
Level 3 --- claiming you did the pix yourself; the fuck-you approach.
Now, if you leave the author's name off of the work, then I could maybe
accept that, myself... on occasion. If you go around claiming the pic
as your own, saying YOU made it, or putting your name on the pix, then
you've obviously adopted Level 3.... The only real reason you have for
not crediting the real author on your popped-thing, is because you want
to tell people that "I made it". And you do, and you know who you are.
Well, you can color a coloring book, but that don't mean you "made" the
pictures. A coloring book frequently has the artists' names somewhere
on it; or at least they got paid for drawing it.
Sure... I know. I alreddy heared 'splantions about how, "Well, we do what
we want ON our channel". Yah. Well, that's not what you do, is it? Most
of you ripper-folks send out the colored pix you've copied, and they end up
all over the place. I know that the audience on IRC is somewhat limited, but
that's no excuse. The kind of people I have "chatted" at are well aware
of the eatiquet that goes with copying pix --- they even read this newsgroup.
They don't post, but they do read. They can tell you all about Joan's sprained
wrist, Sara gettin' her head akcidentally shaved inna combine, Martin's failure
to pass elementry school, Krogg's hemmorhoids, and my... well, I'll keep that
one to myself, if'n you doan mind.
You decent color-folk on IRC don't get huffed, now. I ain't tokkin'
about you.
But I am talking about you people who steal pix, and claim they's yours.
They're not, and I find you irritating. And you smart-ass me, which is also
irritating, on account of you fuckers cain't type fast enough to even carry
on a conversation. And your 'splanations is all sorry ones...
Go into one of them color-ascie-ripoff channels and use your name, and
they'll know who you are. I've went onto channels where they stopped playing
pix, dead. They knew who I was, and waited to see if I would go. When I didn't,
they would un-connect me from their channel. Wow... like I was heartbroken over
it. Of course, some would do that if I told them to get a fucking life, or
played "The Diagnosis" (edited for IRC, but still in B+W.... go look it up on
my web page, if you have to know. I just changed the caption to read "chatrooms"
instead of "websites").
Enough of being silly... for a second. Most of the regulars here are proud of
thier text-pictures. That's why they make posts to this newsgroup, and post web
pages. Nobody minds sharing thier pictures, but nobody likes seeing people try
to "claim" them, either. The only reward you get for making text-pix, is the
response you get from the people who see it; there is no compensation....

.... other than reposts and e-type mail. If folks want to copy it and use
it somewhere, or color it and play it on IRC, then that's flattering. Not so,
however, when it's been ripped by somebody who claims they "made" it, just
because they added color. Seeing your pix ripped like that, makes one want
to keep it to themselves. It doesn't matter if it's cut+pasted portions of an
ascii; that kid up above was still made by somebody, and that somebody might
want people to know who did it. Copying a character out of a picture is still
copying,...

... and it sure spoils the fun in making and posting any asskey.
Which makes me think of something else. Why do you folks who do it,
do it? I'd make my own. Then you can actually claim it, for real. If
you "mirc-artists" are so hot, why don't you post here? Drop me a line,
if you have trouble getting started, or just about anyone else; they'd
be happy to help you... except for Veronica, maybe, who would probably
send you the same kind of answer you will get from me, on Tuesdays.
So, maybe you better not write me, on Tuesday. Any other time, and I'd
probably help you.
I can promise you it's a lot more fun to make your own pix, than
steal someone else's. It's not very hard, either. Then when you say
you "made" a popper (even if it's amyl nitrate), it will really be
true. Who knows? You might even make some good asskey. Maybe somebody
will even rip it off, and say they did it. You'll have joined the
big leagues, then.

Or you might just quit being a colored rip-off. It's not hard
to put in a set of initials; you can even add "colored" by whoever,
to claim your own IRC-type credit. It would keep you friendly with the
people who make the pictures you like to use, and it might even keep
you from having problems with them.

Hi all,
Just finished reading the post from JRO, long one :)
The man is right about what he writes, so why should I comment on it,
well
I will comment cause, I think even though JRO does claim he met nice
people there, the impression I get reading the post is that all the
mirc color channels (read chatrooms) are ascii-ripper channels,
--quote--
Go into one of them color-ascie-ripoff channels and use your name, and
they'll know who you are.
--eoq--
maybe I read it a little wrong, maybe I am touchy (aint we all), but
I read there that no matter where u join they live to make ascii
ripoff's.
And that I don't think is a correct picture to paint, I don't claim
that I havent seen ripp's, I have, on irc, on the web, in this
newsgroup.
To the point, so it wont get to long.
Here are my 3 cents :
- some channels like long text's some don't...is just how it is.
- some channels like mature text's, some doesn't, some channels
have ppl that in fact are kids.
- *** JRO (n...@xxx-xxx-xxx-xx.xxxxxxx.net) Quit (Excess Flood), doesn't
mean someone didn't like the strip, that is a server protection
that got triggered, because one sends to many lines to fast to the
server. Yes it is a pain, but one learns to live with it. :)
- Many of the people I know that make their own text's do not publish
here for 1 simple reason, we don't claim it is ascii we make, we use
ascii, but we use the full character set of windows. Yes, most of
the channels are platform/client dependent. I dont think people
would like my full coloured patterns in here ;).
- When analysing what goes on in an area, one would maybe expect more
comments on what JRO did like when visiting the IRC, if you did that
JRO, then it makes me sad to hear.
That was my 2 cents (yes I took one cent off, running out of room).

See, now here is this feller that helped me out. I are glad to know that he has a real name,
too. He and his pals on Starlink IRC network fixed up my chat program, and sent me other clever
programs that I am told Ole mostly wrote.
You are right, Ole. Some of my post could be taken wrong. I did say color-askei-ripoff channels,
however, which you obviously do not run. I have been to your channel more than once, and never saw
anyone claiming somebody else's pictures. I also saw some totally original stuff, some of it in plain
ascii that y'all should think about posting here. I did state that decent IRC-color people shouldn't
take that post to heart, as I was not talking about them, and that I did type at a lot of polite
people. I considered everybody on your channel to be such, and thanks for the stuff and advisories
y'all done toldt me about.
I visited around on several of the IRC networks, and stopped in all the color, rainbow, and
popup channels I saw. I am sure there are others that I missed. On plenty of them there were people
who did appreciate who made the pictures they colored, and didn't run any files that they had
ripped from anybody. Some of them ran completely original stuff, although most did not. Some
of those folks knew who I was, because I refuse to use a nickname; some accused me of bein' ah
ol' impostor of my own se'f. Some never did see no cartoons by me, until I showed them.
I didn't bother to post about how great the people on IRC were, because what I was posting
about was an old bitch - folks who seem to be so desperate to seek some kind of "fame", they
think stealing ascey is the way to go. Myself, I see that as about the most pitiful form of
plagiary there is. Hell, if I were going to rip text from somebody and claim it for my own,
I think I would steal Willy Ley's "Exotic Zoology". My post wasn't intended to be about the
positive aspects of IRC, but a negative side where the plethora of pitiful plagiarists who pop
a preposterous plenitude of text-art pissed me off --- these are words with a P this time.
IRC is unique in that the response you get is instant. Some people see those colored
pictures, and think they want to play them, too. They learn to do that, but are too addicted
to the instantaneousness of the media. They'd rather just steal somebody else's picture, and
claim they did it, instead of learning to make their own. There are many others who don't do
this. They properly credit the author of the pic they have colored, or learn to make their own
pictures. People like that don't bug me; the others do. Most of the folks I typed at seemed
to know where the pix they had came from, and never thought of trying to claim them as their
own. I did type at more than I wanted to, who DID do those things, however.
I will point out that some of the IRC-color folks started telling ME about the "rules"
reguarding crediting asskey. But, like I said, my post wasn't aimed at you people. It's
aimed at the moronic ignoids who think they've "made" an ascie, by copying it and coloring
it.... or the ones who just steal it outright, and try to convince people they did it.
Those of you who do make your own pix on IRC, ought to post the things. Most of us
would rather that they were in standard asskey format, but it wouldn't bother some of us
(I could actually care less, myself) if it wasn't. Maybe you should consider starting
alt-ascii-extended. I would be happy to help do that, as I am sure others here would.
There is a wider audience for your extended-keyboard pix on Usenet than you will get on
IRC. Of course, any standard ascie picture is more than welcome to be posted here, by
everyone. If you read the posts here, you have already noticed that many of the text-
pictures here aren't very sophisticated, and they don't have or need to be. Anybody who
wants to post a pix here can do so, and it doesn't have to look like some of the real
"artsy" ones. They're just as good (or bad) as anyone else's, as far as I am concerned.
Or you might try converting some of your non-standard pix to standard ascei. It wouldn't
be hard, for many pictures.
... Or you could take over alt.binaries.pictures.ascii and put it to use. There's no posts
on that newsgroup, except for my occasional ascii-.gif cartoon. I'm sure you would pick up
readership, if you started posting there.
You know, there are an awful lot of IRC and/or MIRC (and other) newsgroups on Usenet
that are chat-related. Surely there is one of them that would appreciate your "mirc-art".
Post the pix there. If you do, people would probably read 'em. Using abpa or one of the
irc newsgoups might be a good idea, for you IRC-color folks out there. Then you could identify
plagiarists when they come along, just like we do here.
About rules reguarding what to play on IRC... well, I know about it, Ole. I know about
flooding off, too. On your channel, you folks don't choke everybody with a lot of silly rules,
but many of those chat-channels do. And when I visit IRC, I don't mind getting knocked out
of some channel that don't like my "material". I'm juvenile enough to enjoy that.
It's all just electrons, you know...

Dear JRO, I have followed ascii art and admired it for so long it really amazes me, all the way back to my days in "Genie" when it was still in DOS. I love ascii art, and think its a beautiful way to express ones self with a pc. It was my "first" experience into the world of graphics as well. I see your point very clearly about the "theft" of ascii art and the credits one should give to an ascii artists. I don't know that you were in one of my channels, but I don't believe I would have recognized you even when you were. I am usually pretty busy and rarely notice new folks unless they need some help. I recently myself had an experience where a so called IRC person decided to write a file for mIRC, and pass it off as his own art when it clearly is not his art. I confronted him over it, and even kept the logs. Later I took his file and captured the images of the actual artist and what "he calls" his art. I have every intention of posting it to my website within the week. Alot of problems stem from color in mirc and it only being a little over 2 years old. Most started with the idea of the ascii art, and looking thru websites to see what they could find. Most "color" artists (especially those who've colored for along time now) are either drawing their own art, or have learned to give credit to the actual ascii artists. Unfortunately there are many ascii art sites that also have ascii art posted without those initials and finding the original artist is extremely difficult. Then there are those who just mass produce color files to see how many they can produce, and you can tell the difference in "their" art versus the art of someone who takes there time, just as you can with an ascii artist who did the same thing. Just as a graphic artist who makes a background picture or matching pictures for a website deserves to have credit. I recently ran across a person who said to me and I quote "whele I don't take from websites where they say ask for a link back to there site, I take from the ones that are free" LOL!!!!! like duh!!!! did you ever wonder where they got those so called graphics they call free. This same person is a mass producer of color art and doesn't often give credit, because she believes that once she alters original ascii art, it becomes hers... :( Arguing with her will get you nowhere, and to support a campaign like the Ascii Artists Blue Ribbon Campaign that truffles started with jgs is probably unheard of to her, because she is probably taking from those sites without the credit in the original ascii art and will say, well gee, there was no credit on it. And I personally have been ripped on another website for that "blue ribbon" because that person believes I stole and didn't give credit for that ribbon, if that person had bothered to check with truffles "which I personally and immediately did" he would have found out she got the ribbon from a machine "cgi" thing that produces ribbons of sorts. He actually accused me of using the "free speech for internet blue ribbon" although I doubt he really emailed the people who are in charge of that movement itself. The ribbon now offers the link to truffles site for the campaign and the link to the makers of that ribbon. But his intentions instead were to just rip me instead because of a personal vendetta he has towards me. This is the same ribbon that jgs herself has on her site. Did he rip her as well....nope. I can't say that "color" artists do not take credits out, and it is the policy of the artists who show others how to color in mirc in my channel to tell new artists not to remove credits. We do everything possible to be sure to give credit in, just as a artist who painted a portrait would sign their work. We even offer a file that says clearly in the howtodo file do not take ascii artists credits off there art. I can't say or even tell you that my website is perfect, I freely admit I have colored ascii art their where there was no credit to the ascii artist, and while I wish I knew who to give credit to, it is nearly impossible to do so. I wish that somehow if an ascii artist were browsing thru my site and they saw there art or someone's they recognize, I would hope they would email me and let me know its theres so I could add a credit for them. I would have it there as soon as I saw there email, simply because of the ease of adding to a website...I certainly don't run a 300 page website without knowing how to edit those pages :) I did however join the Blue Ribbon Campaign and added a page stating my opinions so that those who do deserve credit get it. When I know the artist I make every attempt to give proper credit. I do everything I can to insure this is done. When I started out, I was not so "aware" as I am now. The difference is, I do try. I do not want anyone to be left out as far as credit goes. Newsgroups are open to anyone and unfortunately, we either give freely, knowing that probably one in ten will rip the credit out, but for that one person 9 will keep it with respect to the artist. Just as a color artist spends hours coloring a file and freely gives it out only to have it altered by some jerk who thinks he has the right to alter it. I have followed this newsgroup for at least 2 years now and I have seen lots of wonderful people satisfied by the generous artists who so freely give of there talent and their time. I have even asked for something from time to time and been thrilled when art arrived in my email. I know your dismayed, discouraged and upset over the happenings in IRC, and I wish I had a way to solve your problem, unfortunately, I don't. We can only hope that eventually people will learn to give credit where its due, and for those that don't, I will expose them... :) I have no intention of letting theft happen and will expose any individual who claims something as there own that was clearly altered. This letter went on far longer than I had planned to, and I'm sure I didn't do or make you feel any better, but I hope that in some small way you will realize that most IRC color artists are giving credit and do try to give proper credit where its due. patches http://www.mirc-rainbow.com pat...@mirc-rainbow.com JRO <ogl...@mail.fullnet.net-remove> wrote in message news:374fbe76.0@206.103.97.91... > Hey folks, > > I recently got some invites in the e-type mail to > "chat" on IRC. I have never done one bit of ASCII art in my life. Never tried it. But one day, some one sent me about 100 files on mIRC of pics. Most of them did not have any initials on them or any credit given to any artist. I have never claimed to have done any of them. Dear Karen, I wouldn't worry about this, if I was you. You're not going around claiming to have made the pictures that you have which have been colorized for IRC, putting your name on them, and sending them to other people, in some kind of half-witted attempt to make yourself famous (weird). As for copying stuff out of this newsgroup and using it, most everybody here is flattered that you would want to keep and/or use in some fashion anything that they have made. Most folks who make the pix would prefer you leave their credits (usually initials) on their picture. It's about all the notoriety they get for making text-pix, you see. Some, like Mad Dog, aktually kill peeple who ripp his pic and use it without his credits. - Mad Dog is currently serving 25 to life, for the mass murder of somewhere between 5 and 7,347 people who he felt didn't give him "Proper Credit". He is due for parole next month, and will probably be released for good behavior. - People here probably wouldn't even care about credit, if it weren't for so many folks that copy the pix, and then post or play them in places, claiming that THEY did them. Since that kind of behavior got to be commonplace, it ended up irritating the folks who really did make the picture, and they began to be concerned about receiving some kind of meager credit for these text-pix, when it became apparent that there was actually an audience out there, much wider than the few people who liked to make asskey text pictures, and send them back and forth to each other. If the only people who liked the things were the handful here on this newsgroup that makes them, then no one would care. We usually know who did what picture. Since they end up traveling far and wide, it would be nice to be recognized for making them. Rude people who plagiarize the pix spoil the small entertainment of making and sharing them. Since the folks who like text-pictures often know what the "are-teests" preferences are concerning copying and editing and crediting their text-pix, it would be nice if they, themselves, would respect those wishes. Many do. It would be best, if these aficionados would pressure those who would steal the stuff, themselves. After all, that's how it's done in with most "art-forms".... JRO oglesbee@ mail.fullnet.net
I believe this has gone on far enough! You know full well that I told you, as well as the others in the channel at the time, that I never claimed to MAKE any of the pictures that I display, only to have colored them. You also know that both jgs's initials hjw's initials and my initials were in the files and that your major complaint was that they were not visible to YOU unless you copied them. You have a log and I have a log, both of which could be edited, so it would be senseless to post any part of them. You asked me if I had a web site, to which I replied that I did and that there was no ASCII art on it nor were there any popups on it. You did NOT ask me where it was, so I did not tell you. I did not appreciate you threatening to shut down my channel nor did I appreciate you threatening to have me K-Lined from the network. I have the highest respect for most of the ASCII artists and would never even attempt to claim any of their work as my own, only the coloring of their work. I am sorry that you don't like 'silly teddy bears and hearts' but not everyone can like the same things. Just as I don't like your crude manner and misrepresentation of events that have happened. How boring it would be if we all liked the same things. Once again, for the record... JRO... Liar is a very strong word, which I would never consider using unless I knew it to be an absolute fact, and then would only use it with extreme caution. You are correct in stating that I do takes figures from certain ASCII pictures or colorized ASCII that I have come in contact with and I do form a setting of my own. I still have NEVER claimed to have made those figures myself, and even go as far as telling folks that I can not draw a straight line. I do claim some abstract popups [which we call nick-art], but that has nothing to do with the ASCII artists. I also told you that often I do not know who made the figures but once I DO know, then the initials are added. As for the logging, I do keep logs of my channel for various channel matters, which have noting to do with the pictures as I use pIRCh, not mIRC, BUT with mIRC, the only way of obtaining the color codes of the pictures is to log the channel, so many, many folks do log. Again, about the web site... it was created only because I am a Member Rep for an online service and wanted to know how to make one so that I could assist others if questions came up. It was created several years ago before I came to IRC, so does not include any ASCII art, nor does it have reference to IRC. I am often asked if I have a web site and I am quick to reply that it does not have any ASCII art or popups on it, as that is why most folks inquire about it. The ASCII artists do indeed delight many folks with their talent, just as the colorists delight others. I thank you for your offer of assistance, but I am going to decline. It does baffle me why you would make such an offer to someone whom you call a liar and a plagiarist, but as stated before, different things interest different folks. I'll stick to coloring in the 'coloring books' and leave the ART to the artists. I will continue to claim the color and continue to credit the artists. The only thing that this thread is good for is that it does let some new colorist know that the art should be credited when humanly possible. maryemd
Dear Patches,
Thank you for your repost. It was honest and informative. I am pleased to hear that
you are participating in that "Respect Ascii Artists" campaign, and that your helpers
ask newcomers to the hobby of colorizing ascii to please credit the originators of the
text-pictures they copy and colorize for IRC.
It is perfectly understandable that you haven't always had the same awareness about
crediting the "artists" of askey in the past, and that you have files available on your
web site which reflect this. Many of these folks who make ascii did not have any information
on their web pages about their wishes concerning the use of their pictures, until recently.
Some still may not. Although most have always been irritated by the plagiary of their askii,
the colorization and use of it on IRC hasn't attracted a lot of attention, here.
Plagiary of small things is still plagiary, and to those who would not wish to be
plagiarized, it is of little concern whether it is petty or grandiose. It is nice
that you are doing what you can to take note of it, when you see it on IRC.
I looked at your web page, and several other mirc color-sites recently. Many of them
are quite large, and contain a multitude of colorized files for use on IRC. One thing that
they all share in common, is that all of these sites contain text-pictures that were made
by people on this newsgroup. Credit to the authors of those pictures was done in various
ways by the people who had colored them, although there were many that gave no credit at
all. I saw none where someone was deliberately claiming authorship of ascii pictures that
they had not done, but did see ones where it was practically done so by inference. Of the
files I looked at on these sites, the uncredited ones seemed to be in the majority, although
I will add that I can't claim to have seen enough of them to state that as prevalent. Adding
"color by whoever" to a colorized ascii picture, without including the artist's initials, is
intentionally misleading, however. The credited files, and totally non-credited files were
much more wholesome to see.
Since the small number of us who post regularly to alt.ascii-art and/or maintain websites
of ascii seem to be a resource for IRC-color enthusiasts, I found one thing about these "Rainbow"
and "Color" websites offering colorized text-art in mass quantities disappointing. That was the
almost complete lack of mention given to the people who really make the ascii that is so loved
for colorization on IRC. Even on your own web site, what I saw was links to this newsgroup, and
the "Ultimate Ascii Links" web page, which were listed as "Places To Get Ascii". Not "Places To
See Ascii By The People Who Make It", or "Great Ascii Pages", or even "Ascii Websites". Just "places
to get it". There were a couple of other pages that listed such links also, and in a similar
way. I'm sure everyone would like to think that IRC people who look at these websites aren't
just browsing in to "get ascii".
... It kind of makes B'ger and Joan and Flump and others look a little bit like trollops, and
Andreas and Erik "The Dick" Veland look like pimps.
Except for one page, there was no mention about the folks who make ascii. That page were jus'
suckin' up to Joan, anyways. I figger she's glad to knoe that sumboddy does, in case she doan
alreddy.
It might be nice to see a little more attention paid to the wording of some of those links
to ascii sites (some pages have none at all, of course). Or a kind word or two on these
IRC-color sites about the people who produce original ascii-art; at least the ones they like
to color so much (which depends on the color site, of course). There is plenty to read on them
about these mirc-color-artists who colored these pictures.
Credit should go to where credit is due, of course.
I will be as frank as you have tried to be. Myself, I have a little trouble calling ascii "art".
I don't even call my own real cartoons art. I suppose they both are, but I was raised around people
who made serious art; the kind that hangs in places like the Smithsonian Institute. Text-art is a
type of pop-art, and I like making it, but I joke about it being "art". Most people do consider it
art, however, and although I may jibe the other regulars here about that, art is in the eye of the
beholder. The consensus is against me about ascii being art, although none would argue (I think)
about it comparing to some other, more serious forms. Regardless, I have real trouble in considering
mirc-colorizations as art, at all.
I have seen some of those colorized files that actually make a picture of something when played
on IRC. There are many of these, although they are in the minority. Although different from asskey,
they really do make a picture, and so qualify as "art". Others are likewise text-art, and some are
extended character text-art. The majority of these color-texts are borders and curlicues, however...
and colorized ascii, the finest of which is taken from folks here, of course. Much of the ascii has
had non-standard characters added to enhance it on IRC, and/or other alterations which are usually
intended to make some kind of "unique" modification, without really "changing" the text-picture.
Colorizing ascii and fancy bordering just isn't art, however. It's just coloring. Some of it is
quite striking, but it doesn't qualify as art, and can't be compared to making ascii, or making an
actual picture by using colorization.
The glorification, zealousness, and jealous arguments that surrounds "mirc-art" strikes me as
faintly ridiculous. I have been getting a good bit of email from some IRC-color enthusiasts, and
they all discuss this. I understand there are arguments about who colorized what ascii. Gee... I'm
sure Krogg would be pleased to hear there are ladies out there, seething and ready to kill because
someone else colored their colorized ascii file a different color. Probably one that somebody else
had already colored, already. Fascinating...
On the other hand, coloring ascii and making colored pictures and borders is your hobby, so dealing
with those issues is best left to those involved. I won't pretend to understand it.
For instance, I am told that portions of your repost are aimed at Ole, aka Dane, who I am glad
has a real name. I don't think that conflicts over color websites and scripts and such are of much
value here, although they are interesting.
I wish you much luck in making known whoever the man was that you mentioned was displaying pirated
acii-art. I think the best path for exposing a plagiarist in action on IRC, is that taken by
the "fans", or "users" of ascii art, who recognize he or she as such. We on AAA infrequently have to point
out that someone new to this newsgroup is posting a picture that was done by previously by someone else,
and is trying to claim it as their own. Those kind of folks usually don't return and make more posts,
after being exposed. The problem is different on IRC, because you are dealing with "chat", which is gone
as soon as you close the program. Here, there are many more readers, and the media has some permanent
aspects to it, in that posts are archived. The participants of a chat are limited at any instant to the
channel or channels that they are on where something is happening, and when they notice a plagiarist,
exposing such a person is effective primarily in one channel, at that given time. That person can always
come back with a different nickname another time, or simply move to a different channel and/or network.
Unless they become a real terror with their activities, there is little chance that anyone will complain
to the administrator of the network. Posting some kind of alert on your web page about an ascii pirate
might be an effective means of letting others know about that person's behavior.
As to the production of mass numbers of color files, I guess that's an IRC issue which doesn't
really have a comparison here. More asskey art would just be more ascie art, and the more the better.
I'm certain the IRC-color enthusiast feels the same way about there being more askii art to pick
and choose from. We'd just as soon see people make all they can, and there's not really any competition
as to how many everyone can make. Quality isn't that big an issue, especially considering there aren't
many people making it all the time. I'm not sure it would be, even if there were. A text-picture is a
text-picture, and almost all of them have merit.
There are many places on-line to get free things like backgrounds, wallpaper, ect.. Lots of that,
and other items, come without credits or restrictions on their usage. Many of the graphic artists who
produced some of those items did receive recognition - often in the form of a paycheck. No one pays
an ascii-artist for making a text-picture. They do it for fun, and would appreciate being known for
making the askei that they did make, instead of having someone steal it. There are plenty of graphic
artists who also do pictures, ect., for pure joy. I have not seen many people attempting to garnish
credit by plagiary of a background image; not yet, anyway. If it's a problem for the graphic artists
who do those things, then they should address it themselves. I haven't witnessed much of that kind
of thing, and am not able to comment with celerity upon it.
Fortunately, there are not many ascii art sites that don't give credit to the authors who made
the pictures. There are pictures whose author is unknown, but there a site that doesn't credit
the artist is a rare thing, unless you are talking about IRC-color sites. There may be many of those,
but not ascii sites that don't credit the authors. There have been some ascii sites that were posted
by plagiarists, and those have upset ascii artists, on occasion. I believe most of those sites no
longer exist, and I don't think there were many, or that they were well-known in the first place.
Most ascii artists take a different view about some 10-year old kid who posts a homepage with an
ascii that is without credits or that they have credited to themselves, than to an ascii page that
contains many pictures that are stolen or deliberately miscredited. If you know of pages such as
these, whether they are real ascii sites or IRC-color sites, I think we can speak for everybody
in that we would like to know where they are.
Which brings me to another point you made in your repost. Who is this [quote]"mass-producer of
color art that doesn't often give credit, because she believes that once she alters original ascii
art, it becomes hers"[endquote]? Sure sounds like "maryemd" to me. If it's maryemd or not, I think
folks here on AAA would like to know about her. If you can help with some kind of support to your
claim, which I do not doubt is quite true, it would be most kind of you.
Ascii art is free. It's made and posted here on aaa, and on webpages which are mostly
associated with this newsgroup. The "artists" who make these pictures are all happy to share them
with whoever enjoys the pictures they make, author, type, draw, or whatever you want to call it.
They receive little encouragement, less recognition, and no pay for their efforts which many
appreciate with only a passing muse of how clever it is. Perhaps that is how it should be, because
a text-picture is usually as fleeting as yesterday's newspaper... or cartoon (I guess if you combine
the two, you are really fucked). The people who make this humble artwork crave nothing of anyone,
except that they are not stolen from them.
I reckon I have responded to most of your repost, Patches. Since you are both knowledgeable and
have taken an interest in this issue, perhaps you would be good enough to drop us a line, or a post
about where it's going on IRC. I myself think that more of you colored-IRC folks ere tryin' to give
credit to peeple here who make asskey, than ere not. It is nice that you are considerin' the small
ree-spects that asskee are-teests would like to git, since so much of it are used on IRC.
Thanks agin,

JRO <ogl...@mail.fullnet.net-remove> wrote in message news:3753e97d.0@206.103.97.91... Hi Jonathon, I try very hard (after having been in IRC for so long) to not read more into something than what I see. I almost feel as I read thru these posts that no matter how much someone tries to help in this situation with you, your attitude is such that you won't even give a note to those artists who actually do draw there own and color it. I realize that you didn't start this thread about those who do, but the more I read these posts, the more I wonder what your real intent is. > by people on this newsgroup. Credit to the authors of those pictures was done in various > ways by the people who had colored them, although there were many that gave no credit at > all. I saw none where someone was deliberately claiming authorship of ascii pictures that The one thing you don't see is and yes in almost all cases artists initials are "hidden" in the art. Its not just the ascii artist itself, it is the person who colored it as well. It really does depend on the person coloring the picture and how they choose to show the art and the credit. I can't make this argument without feeling odd here, because I have hid the ascii artists initials myself when I color. (the initials are still there, you just can't see them, and it is very common on irc to 'drag' or 'hilite' colored art) I don't have a really great reason for doing so other than that if you take a small picture lets say 5 lines of ascii art, color it, and add your own little nick which is also hidden then you have two names under the art. Earlier art shows that there are just two nicks in the art, art from today usually comes with the "hjw" or "jgs" still in the art, but some artists will do a "colored by therenick" type of thing or will show the ascii artists nick and choose not to show there own. As ascii artists have a certain style, so does a color artist, and I'm sorry, but just because we color your art, doesn't make us lower or petty. If ascii art wasn't to be colored, then why do some ascii art sites color there own art, or even animate it to that degree. I am afraid that even if ascii art wasn't colored that "mirc and pirch" users would color the art anyway and some ascii artists may even like seeing how it hilites and looks with areas of the art colored. So having two different sets of initials at some point becomes confusing, because people will wonder who's it is, but I have honestly learned something with this, and will add a note when I show people how to color to add a "colored by there nick" so that it is clear who drew and clear who colored the art for future reference. I hope anyone here reading this will see it and do the same so that it will not be as confusing in the future. I believe tho that in all fairness that someone who took the time to color it deserves some recognition for it as well. Some artists choose to show the artist underneath picture as well with a Ascii Art: hjw Colored by Tera type of thing, even a known color artist who goes by Kris does the same thing. Others choose to add the ascii artists initials with a shadow color so that it is still there and can still be seen although isn' t the main focus of the art, which I think is actually nicer as the shadowing lends itself nicely and is something I have done as well. I don't always hide the initials, and I do not color alot of art either, and as of late I have even just drawn my own as I tend to like doing my own thing as well. I do not need to be famous or well known, that is not the reason I am in IRC. > almost complete lack of mention given to the people who really make the ascii that is so >loved for colorization on IRC. Even on your own web site, what I saw was links to this >newsgroup, and the "Ultimate Ascii Links" web page, which were listed as "Places To Get well, this would be my website indeed, I have always had the link to the main list, as my intent was not to show favoritism towards one website over the other, and I had always used that list myself to visit those sites. I list the newsgroups, because I follow them myself and enjoy them. It is fun to see people get excited over the first thing they drew, or to see someone compliment them. but no where in the links section did you see any one ascii artists website singled out. Joans website was my "pick for the month in April" simply because each time I go to her website it is always fun and entertaining to visit, it is not just about the "ascii art" it is about having fun when you are visiting and her website always holds something new and exciting to see there. (She likes java and so do I), (that was actually my main reason) (not because I have chosen to show favortism, and even when she has appeared in IRC, I have tried not to do the same thing) I'm sorry, just because you may be famous doesn't mean I'm going to hold you in esteem should you visit my channel, nor does it mean I'm going to give you ops because an ascii artist might be famous' While others in my or even someone elses channel may do that, it won't happen from me, as I believe that the person wishes to be treated the same way and with the same respect anyone would get. > It might be nice to see a little more attention paid to the wording of some of those links > to ascii sites (some pages have none at all, of course). Or a kind word or two on these I have to wonder here when you were visiting these websites how much of a site you saw. Even if it were my own website, certainly you saw enough art to realize that credit is given where its known and even as I go thru and revamp my website which at the moment is actually being done, I have started adding the initials of the ascii artist where it is known. I started that long ago, but the website also gets a back door to my real life, which only gets updated when I actually have the time to do it. > who made serious art; the kind that hangs in places like the Smithsonian Institute. Text-art is Perhaps your right, art is only in institutions where it is recognized, however, there are all kinds of art forms and ways to express ones self. Whether its an artist to who paints with oil, one who paints with fabric, one who paints with metal or even one who paints with the click of a mouse it is still a form of expression and art itself is a form of expression. > they really do make a picture, and so qualify as "art". Others are likewise text-art, and some are extended character text-art. The majority of these color-texts are borders and curlicues, however... hehehe, now see, theres where I am getting this note of sarcasm from you, I really hope I am just misinterpreting that. Isn't "ascii art" considered art without the extra fonts, and without the use of alt characters either, just the basic keyboard art. Artists in mirc and pirch have the option to use the 'alt' characters as that is something that shows up in mirc and pirch and even the maker of a well known color add on for color artists in mirc and pirch adds the alt characters in the program for ease of use I assume for artists to use. and these if I understand right, I am not sure on this tho, are a windows font of some sort or other. > and colorized ascii, the finest of which is taken from folks here, of course. Much of the ascii Whether it is little squigglies or even a solid block of color it is still an expression of one self and the way they express it. I gather that when you were at my website you did not bother to look at all of the artists whos art is featured there. Of the 19 shows that are featured at my website, Ten of the artists do not use ascii art, they actually color there own, and use there own ideas to make art with, each varying in there own style and type of format to color in. Most artists even ascii I'm sure when they are starting out, start with something they saw, and they either expand on it or try to do something like it on there own. Or even just playing with there pcs they come up with some form of drawing. In IRC most start with ascii art, we actually encourage that as its a way to get them started when they wish to color in the first place, but I really believe that the number of artists who continue to use ascii art is fewer than the color artists who do there own art. Its not just about little squigglies or cartoons, its about the fun you can have coloring like the days when you were a child with a crayon and a coloring book :) > The glorification, zealousness, and jealous arguments that surrounds "mirc-art" strikes > me as faintly ridiculous. However, most people do come back, or the "color" in mirc and chat itself would not even be at issue here, and most people just love the art, There are far more who enjoy it and admire it than there are actual artists, and its such fun to see them get so excited over being able to play with the pictures (by play, I mean to display it in the channel) For myself, the funnest part of any time on IRC is when I help someone without any art at all have art to play and have fun with in mirc. Even as you have seen your initials removed, a color artist in mirc has also seen the same thing when her initials are removed or her art is altered. She/he deserves the same respect you ask and want. > Fortunately, there are not many ascii art sites that don't give credit to the authors who made > the pictures. There may be many of Unfortunately, while IRC color sites are very prevalent, they are more interested in just being out there to offer files. That isn't really the main focus of my website although it does offer alot to the user of mirc to download. Art at my website is far more used than in any other website I've seen. Some sites choose not to use so much art or may not display for what reason I do not know, (maybe they worry about bandwidth, or might not have the space to do that) I truly love showing what can be done with art, whether its ascii art, or even an artists original works. My website doesn't just offer a section where you can see shows, it also offers an artists section in the download area that features the artists who have colored and there individual works. I am trying to redo that section to give the credit for the ascii art even at the moment. Maybe they just haven't figured out how to "capture" in mirc yet I don't know. I only know of about 4 sites that show actual colored art, and of those sites, 1 has more to offer than all of the other 3 combined and thats because I love to show it off and I don't fear the part that says "credit" hasn't been given because I do try to give it where I can, and those seeing the entire site would know that. > contains many pictures that are stolen or deliberately miscredited. If you can help with some kind of support to your claim, which I do not doubt is quite true, it would be most kind of you. this one is hard, (and no, its not maryemd, (I do not even know her), If I didn't believe that she was honestly trying to change, I would not even hesitate to tell, but at the moment I can not do it as some people are trying to teach her to go a different route and I am afraid it would harm the well meaning of those trying to help her change her ways. I believe she will change, its not her intention to take credit away on purpose, she just doesn't know better and wasn't given the opportunity to really make that change. She loves to color ascii art and she does produce alot of art, she has a spirit and comedic way of doing things that is genuine, funny and given time she will do an about face. She has never done what I would call steal out and out, but she has altered art to suit her versus drawing or doing something of her own and then claimed it as her own, but the art she took was not "ascii artists'' from a website it was from artists inside mirc who draw there own. > Ascii art is free. I myself think that more of you colored-IRC folks ere tryin' to > credit to peeple here who make asskey, than ere not. You spoke of visiting several channels in your first post and I believe that you saw artists who did there own, spoke of whether they made it or not or even said who did, so there are people who do give or say it isn't theres and aren't afraid to tell people that. Its just those few dummies who seem to yes want some sort of fame or glory from saying its theres, and yet the funnest thing imho is giving to a new person and letting them learn to love it on there own. I would love to further promote the use and love of ascii art at my website, back in January, I attempted to email several ascii artists on a feature I wanted to do called "Ascii Artist of the Month". Alas, not even one person responded to my email. I would still love to do this feature Jonathon, and if your interested in helping to do this with me, I'll work with you on it. We could easily add a section where artists could display several selections of there art and a link would be added to there website or a place where more of there art could be seen for all to enjoy and I believe it would help to give recognition where its due for many artists who do deserve to be recognized. I truly love ascii art Jonathon, and had I not done a "mirc" website, I would have done a site on either ascii art or quilting....(my other love) :) I'll try not to be so quiet, here in the newsgroups in the future, but I honestly didn't have alot to say beforehand, and while I've tried drawing a few things, I'm not an ascii artist, and I do know this, but I do enjoy seeing the fun things all of you make, I love seeing the excitement people get from making there first as well. again, long winded as usual, sorry about that, patches http://www.mirc-rainbow.com pat...@mirc-rainbow.com

Dear Mary,
You are a liar.
Is it pathological with you, or just something you do on-line?
I know full-well what you "said". You clearly and succinctly made full claim to
the pictures you had "colored". Furthermore, it was your contention that if you
copied somebody else's text-picture, took out selected characters of your own
liking, and combined it with other cut+pasted portions of another text-picture
(from the same author, in one particular case in point), and added a little block-
coloring to make a hat (IRC-coloring, folks), then you were in fact the "artist".
You MADE the characters in the picture, due to the fact that you copied and pasted
them, and that character was now of YOUR creation. You did NOT have to credit
anybody, because it was YOURS. YOU could copy any asskey text-picture, from wherever
YOU liked, and if YOU used it, it was YOURS.
You became the artist, by virtue of copying and pasting as you chose.
There is no need in continued rhetoric on this. I have typed at other IRC-color
people, and didn't encounter this kind of plagiary with them. Some, as you have
noticed, have already reposted their thoughts on the issue. Others I "chatted"
with quickly announced that the ascie text-pix they were coloring and playing were
not theirs, and they did not author them. Many had colored pix that showed no
credits, but they did not claim to have made them, and gleefully told who did,
if they knew (and they did more often than not).
You did state your claim to making them, however.
You made it clear what you meant, also. You made it crystal clear that your
attitude towards the originators of the pictures you plagiarized was one of
absolute disdain. There was no misunderstanding
You are a plagiarist.
I am sure you are well aware that a concensus of your plagiary can also be
obtained, not from only me --- but from many in the IRC-coloring arena. I have
already recieved more than one e-type mail, from others who concienciously participate
in this hobby, reguarding such.
I did see initials crediting Haley-Jane, on ONE pop-up ran by your cohort, Jo-Jo.
Those credits were invisible, and could only be seen if you highlighted the entire
"popup". But that is the ONLY pop-thing that I saw ran in your channel, that had
any kind of credits to the real "artists", at all. When I mentioned that it might
be nice to make the credits visible, you retorted that you knew they were there,
and that's all that counted. For the other pictures you displayed that were
totally without credits, you explained that they would only mess up the pictures,
and couldn't be included in them for that reason. I showed you how you could add the
credits back, outside the picture, and without messing it up, and you explained that
you weren't interested in having any credits on those pictures, anyway. Hell, the
artwork was really YOURS; why should you show somebody else's credits?
I find it interesting that you should bring up IRC "logs". Even more interesting
that you mention how they could be edited. I don't waste space with IRC logging, and
have less interest in editing worthless banter than I do in reading it. My IRC program
doesn't "log" a thing. I'm positive that yours does, though, and editing it seems to be
the first thing that comes to your mind. It's a pity your own guilty concience kept
you from including such an edited version in your respost, out of fear that I might
have a log, myself. You could have concievably decieved somebody with it.
You poor woman... I don't need a "log". My veracity is established in better
places than on-line, by people and institutions you can merely read about. Even
here on the internet, my candid credibility is of complete and correct
verisimilitude - {almost words with a "c" this time}.
I didn't ask you for your web-address, because you lost not a second in telling
me there was no asskey on it. Whether there is (or was) or isn't, I have no idea.
If there is - or was - any of YOUR pictures there, then I'm positive they would
be plagiaries. If you don't, or never did have any text-pix there, then that would
not surprise me either, and probably from your concerns of being recognized for
your activities. I expected you to not tell me where your web-site was, because
you refused to send me any of the "pop-ups" containing plagiarized ascie pictures
in them. Oh, you had several explanations for why you couldn't; first it was your
server acting up, and then it was your program. Lies. I had alread started an auto-
get from you, which you cancelled. The only problem you had in sending me your
rip-pops, was that of "protecting" yourself.
The handful of people who actively produce "ascii-art" do it as a hobby for the
entertainment of themselves, and the few others who also make it. That there are other
people who actually enjoy it, is a welcome but somewhat unexpected bonus. The encouragement
to continue producing text-pictures is small, despite the fact that it has a reasonably
widespread appeal. It comes mostly from those same, few other text-artists. When it comes
from someone outside those ranks, it is high praise, indeed. Yet such meager recognitions
frequently are the incentive for most ascii-artists to continue making new pictures to
hopefully delight someone with. Some of them even become quite prolific at it. Some do not.
Some quit, after only turning out a few ascii pictures.
Plagiarism these little works of the few, and generally unknown people who make them,
is like a slap in the face when confronted with it. Counterfeiters like you, who are well
aware of your fraud, are engaged in something so petty that it passes eschewed on most
occasions. Stealing something as benign as an ascii picture is typically done beneath
notice, and is an infraction that is certainly beneath contempt. You should be flattered,
indeed, that I do hold your words and deeds in contempt, for the benefit of those you
injure in your paltry fashion.
You are pathetic, maryemd. You are a liar and a plagiarist. Your only redeeming quality
is that you use your real name, if that is your name, and I'm not certain I believe you.
People like you must be so accomplished in your starvation for attention, that you would
do just about anything for even the most trivial recognition.
Return to your "chathole", maryemd. Your channel should be shut down from IRC, where you
and your ilk are an affront to the nice folks who enjoy, and yet do not steal, the minor works
of those who have a little talent with the keyboard that you do not share. Go back to "chat",
and impress yourself and your motley crewe with the plagiarized works you steal. Thrill
each other, and tell each other you MADE them. Or hurry up and add credit the real authors
that you have stolen from, and squat on your channel and hope you don't get K-lined. I won't
complain. I will add my complaint, only if the "artists" I who I saw you had theived from wish
me to do so, or unless others who decorously participate in IRC-coloring of ascii choose to
lodge similar notice to the administrators of your IRC-network. From what I hear, there are
many who do not share your enthusiam for stealing others' works.
Better yet, honey... why don't you drop me an email. I'd be happy to teach you how to
make your own asskey are-tuh. Why run someone elses' pix, when you could make your own? Shit,
you might even git famous for it, just like the people you've been rippin' off. I'll wager
that I can have you askein' with the best of 'em, in no time a'tall. You might loose a little
chat-time, but I think you'll find it time spent in an even more satis-factory way..... You
can count on my complete discretion, too. Ask around, if you doan b'lieve me. I'll be glad
to help you learn to do your own stuff, and I won't tell a soul.
It's easy.

Just a couple of days later some girl with a yahoo email address posted them proudly saying "I made these all by myself!" LOL I was furious at the time. Later I kept the post in a text file and put it in the file I keep all my ascii work in. Its still there. For me its acknowledging that anything I make and post somewhere is likely to be stolen. They know what they are doing. Thats why you can't get them to stop. I have also been on IRC but I see more stolen art on webpages. I think the original intent of my post is clear: I don't like asskey thieves. It's about the most petty form of plagiary there is, and it has and still is all too common with you "chat people". I don't really need you to "help me in this situation", and it's pretty obvious from your repost, that you wouldn't help with the problem, anyway. When you irc-coloreds copy our pictures and use them, no one minds that anymore than providing somebody with an email signature, ect.. When some "colored" copies asskey and claims they made it, then we're not real happy about that. The truth about your reposts here, is that you are just trying to upstage your fellow "coloreds" (I'm getting letters about you not being too well-loved on IRC, either). That, and grab some recognition from the ascii artists who post here. You also seem to be "coming out" with the fact that you have had, and still do have, pirated ascie available on your website, which you say you're doing something about. You are to be commended for that, but I think your main intent is merely to obtain some kind of pre-discovery exoneration for these current omissions. Since the Respect Ascii Artists Campaign is hardly new, and you already know all about it since it's inception, I find that just a bit odd. And, of course, what you'd really like us to do, is kiss your electronic ass, and tell you how wonderful all the chat people are, and what "artists" your coloring pals are. ... Well, if they are so great, why don't they post here? We'd love to see their stuff; we really would! We welcome new people, whether they are new to making ascii, or just new to this newsgoup. If they can't or don't know how to post on usenet, maybe they ought to have a nice web page of ascii art. I'd enjoy looking at non-standard text-pictures on a website, too. Instead, all you coloreds offer is 500gigabytes of zip files, with just an occasional few pictures; if any. Not much to look at, only good on IRC, and most of us just don't use IRC. Furthermore, most of that kind of material is nothing but colored borders and bad poetry, and much of it is just colorized ascii that's been copied from our own websites - reguardless of whether it is politely credited or not. Now, if any of these mirc-artits you would like us to recognize had some art sites to see, we might concede that some of them are pretty good. If they would come out of the shadows and post here, we would be happy to see their contributions, which would recieve the same acclaim that you see given to whoever posts new or clever pictures here on alt.ascii-art. You see.... I can't give "a note" to the coloreds you think are such great artists. Hey, I might like to, if I saw some of their stuff, and it was original and good. I'm sure there may be people on IRC that do make some pretty good ascii. Well, they need to graduate up from the bowels of chat, if you would like them to be recognized by us. Surely they can find a moment free from chatting, to make a post or two? Now, since your post is so long, I'm going to get a little assist from some experts in the field of e-type communikation analysis, and turn 'em loose on this. It is with great pleasure we see the end of this prediculous task. Next time, we will employ sub-neuronic-dematerializer on such retrofarb. 1. Terro-Female-Protobeing known as "Patches" is no friend of ascii artists. 2. It is likely she is stricken with Terro-Virus recently discovered and named "Asciius Prevaricatuenza". 3. We are confident that she encoded this transmission, using the same device that had been misrepresented to Krogg as a "tranzlator". 4. Which means, of course, that the Terro-Patch-Being is... "on the rag". ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Get it right, "Patches" (get a name!). Your last post pretty much exposes you as another victim of Asciius Prevaricatuenza. You need help. IRC isn't a resource for the ascii artist. WE are used as a resource by YOU people. There is no real interest, here, in what you do on IRC. Who cares about your colored files? The only interest we have in them, is when some of your confederates steal from us. Check Dejanews, if you do not believe me. You will not find a bunch of posts about IRC. Nobody here is working hard on colorized pictures for IRC. We're not much interested in that kind of thing. Ascii wasn't "meant to be colored"; especially not by you people on IRC. If you wish to do so, then that's fine. All that we ask, is that the you respect the wishes of the ascii artists, and leave the credits intact; not ripp and steal from us as would. We're not stealing your color files. We're not miscrediting you. We're not fighting with each other about our web pages, and who should have credit for what picture. We're not posting about who is nice, and who is rotten on our pages. We're not defending the rights of plagiarism, because so-and-so is a "comedic spirit". We don't come into your forum, and do a 180 about such an issue, either. We don't have, and aren't interested in your problems on IRC with other color channels, their operators, and whose "script" we're using. We don't want to see that kind of discussion, here. We ARE the ones that are ripped-off, plagiarized, and prostituted by the "coloreds" of IRC. Please do NOT come back and keep us informed about this issue. It is obvious that whatever information you might have, would be suspect. Whatever plagiaries or thefts of intellectual property you might have to report in the future, would likely be tainted by IRCsome gossip and infighting. That's not the means we would like to see employed to assist us in the little campaign which advocates against the theft of the quaint little hobby-artform known as "askii art". Thankyou for your time, and the revealing insights your posts have given us. Jonathon R. Oglesbee oglesbee@ mail.fullnet.net

Psychotics do that. Shootists usually never shoot anything but targets on a firing range, cans, beer bottles throwed in the air, the odd plagiarist, ect.. JRO

Read a lot of interresting stuff in those threads, somehow I admirer
peoples use of the language, but I guess my excuse for not having a
"colorfull" language is that I am danish.
To the point :
seen a lot of comments about why not show what is done, and where is
all the "art". Well I put up a page on our homepage to show that we do
make other stuff then borders and bad poetry. Ya can call it art or
you can call it kids drawing, frankly I don't care :) I had lots of
fun doing it, and if other people likes to call it art, bad or good,
that is up to them, I did and do it for fun nothing else but fun, and
to have a good time.
I do get the point that is brought up here, and see a lot of misplaced
trying to be angels, but the reason for this post, and putting up the
actual page is that I still see the chat people mentioned in general.
If I am considered not a valid person because I enjoy chatting and
have fun doing that with the people I met and considers friends, then
that is ok with me, cause we have to remind that to the one that don't
know better he might think he got the best :).
well here is the guideline to the page, and you can judge the quality
of what you see, thats ok with me, but I had fun doing it.
1'st step -> http://members.xoom.com/danexx/mc/
2'nd step -> click the "art" button (no I don't claim it is art, but
ppl know that word :)
3'rd step -> click "Click here to see a page with more "art", heavy
loading." if you don't click that you will see borders and bad poetry
:).
Then sit back and let it load, and when it is done loading, you might
understand why I dont post here :)
stay safe out there.

We ought to support the ribbon > campaign and support the mIRC people who > are supporting us. > > -joan In my original post, and even some since then, I have allowed that there are many (even most) of the IRC-color enthusiasts that do not attempt plagiary and miscredit. I have no problem with them. The others are an embarrasment to the ones who try to be considerate of the askcie bunch. That they have bugged me on this recent occasion, is probably a good thing. It never hurts to haff this issue brought back up, every now and then, as it is still a problem. That it probably will be, is no reason to ignore it when it does happen. Sure... I've argued otherwise in the past, if anybody remembers. So what? As to supporting the IRC folks who are supporting us... it sounds nice. But the infighting between the color, rainbow, and pop-up channels approaches near world war levels. It would be a lot more palitable to us, if they had some kind of consensus, and weren't always smearing each other over who wrote what "script" or who re-colored whoose pop-up. As it is, I'm not sure I can be very freindly with any of them. Patches wanted to do features on some of us askii people on her page, for instance. Okay... say we go along. It's not a question of notoriety for us; but it might be for her, or it may just be viewed that way. Now how many other IRC-color channels are mad at us? From what I have seen, the channel-web-page- op-owners of those groups, each seem to have a major dislike for each other. Patches hates Ole, Mary dispises Aaron, ect.. I wouldn't like for us to be used as some kind of asskey ammo, to be fired back and forth between their channels and web pages. ... On the other hand, I like a good shoot-out. I hereby offer my services as second. As to the Blue Ribbon Campaign, I would like to take it serious. But even it's web page could use a bit of spelling correction, to say nothing of just needin' ah good ree-ritin'.... And I wonder how serious anyone takes it. Like "patches", who states she's in support of theft, in defense of IRC-coloring. An odd attitude, when you consider that we are their resource, not the other way around. Maybe the "campaign" could use a new look. JRO
> Patches hates Ole, Mary dispises Aaron, ect.. who gave you that idea? Wow, someone is putting words in my mouth that I personally have never said even in IRC. > I wouldn't like for us to be used as some kind of asskey ammo, to be fired > back and forth between their channels and web pages. as for notoriety, nothing could be further from the truth, my idea for adding a section to my website was sincerely meant as a jesture to honor and give tribute to the ascii artists who's art we do indeed use and enjoy. I don't need or want the notoreity, and if I thought that my page even brought that to me, I'd pull it. As far as channel wars, whele that happens in every net. and it doesn't just involve color channels....some people however like to make a war happen where there really is no war at all. They will tell you things that are untrue and they will speak about past things as tho noone is allowed to try and change or do things differently. To many people in this world hold a grudge and personally I have better things to do with my time than to worry about who's script or who's channel or even whos art is better than the other. Thanks Joan, and I am now outta here.

Yes, JRO, some people pirate ASCII art. As we know, this is nothing new. It will most probably continue so long as there are ignorant and rude people on the earth. However, I am with you that notice needs to be made. It may feel like we are emptying the ocean one teaspoon at a time, but it is much better than apathy. Keep in mind that there are LOTS of mIRC channels... and they are all run differently. Personally, I've only frequented mirc_rainbow and mirc_color. On both of these channels, the ops really do encourage proper credits with their pop-ups. They might be 'hidden' within the image, but most often, they are there. (unfortunately a gif/jpg reproduction of the pop-up will eliminate the credits) Most of the regulars on these channels recognize ASCII art and know who made what. I'm sure that no one could get away with posting Row's infamous eagle or Felix Lee's sleeping kitty. People do want to know who made uncredited ASCII pics. I've seen changes made on pop-ups as soon as the original artist was identified. What am I trying to say? Well, out of the many mIRC channels, I know of two that support ASCII artists. There's probably more... but there are still inconsiderate and ignorant people out there. Most of the pictures do not have many non-standard characters. Those could be easily edited and posted here; no problem. It probably wouldn't hurt you a bit, to do that for our edification. Or, you could post them on alt.binaries.pictures.ascii, just as they are, in the pix format. That would be an easy thing for a lot of these colored-extended pictures. The website owners of all these IRC color sites could easily do the same. Why not post .gif's or .jpg's of your extended-pictures on the asciey pictures news group? Many of you have a few examples on your pages... Post those, and make some more. Advertise the newsgroup on your web pages; it's not like it's being used frequently by anyone here. Last I checked, I was the only one who had posted any ascii-.gif coversions there, in a long time. I don't think anyone would object to colored ascii and/or extended pictures being posted to ABPA. This might also help with some of your own "accreditation" problems. Usenet posts, as you know, are practically permanent. They are archived on the web at several sites, such as Dejanews and Remarq. This could prove to be a boon in solving some of the infighting that seems to be prevelant between the pop-up manufacturers. Anyway, congratulations on posting a web page with some pictures on it. You should increase the thing, as time allows. The only suggestion I have, is you might reduce the number of pictures per page, because of the loading time. It took me three attempts to load all of that large page. I live in the sticks, of course... JRO

It's just possible you are "notable" in the IRC-color world. I love statistics JRO, I am very much into stats, always have been. and while I'm told that the numbers I have for my website are high, I wish there was a way to know about the people who visit. I am a curious person, I love to know more, I want to know about the visitor who comes to my website, so having a stat service there is important for me as I can see many things about the visitors...doesn't necessarily mean I have a successful site. However, whatever notoriety I gained in IRC...it wasn't from my website, it was because I don't have the nicest reputation. I will "argue" and "defend" and even go so far as "fight" for the things I truly believe in....as you can well see. I am not always gonna be right, but at least I stood up for something I believed in versus talked behind someones back. Joan didn't make that post, I did. But you are welcome. I got the idea you asked about above, from only the people involved. Both through your posts here, and email and "chat" from others. I'm glad you're not looking for notoriety, but since you already bragged on your web page statistics, then maybe you should consider pulling it, as quickly as possible. It's just possible you are "notable" in the IRC-color world. As for channel-script wars, this is a purely IRC issue. The existence of these conflicts in the IRC-arena makes one hesitant to endorse any IRC "channel" or web site, because of the hostility it might engender in some of the others. We don't have that kind of thing, here. For instance: > To: Oglesbee > From: Krogg > > You can't post that picture here, you dumb sonofabitch.
