I'm tired. Dear Mr. Mitchelhill, I just caught your post, and I thank you very much for rescuing me from terminally menstrual housewives. Your point about spoken speech is kerrect. Most people do talk just like I captioned, which is how things are. My appologies for Americanisms invading your side of the pond. Anyway, I appreciate you bringing to bear your (obviously) formidable powers or erudition to point out this fact. I was about to become irritated and post some hasty (but true) remarks myself. No one wants to read garbage arguments on a cartoon thread, however, and I feel that your post was an adequate and timely defense of my position. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar, Jonathon R. Work on that a bit, and see what you've said wrong.
I'm with lizard. Unless you meant something other than what it seems. If you COULD care LESS, that means there is a level of caring that you are at and it could be lower but it isn't. In other words : you care. If you COULDN'T care less, that means that your caring is at the lowest level it could possibly be at. You don't care at all. --SB JRO wrote: > > Work on that a bit, and see what you've said wrong.

Artists (in this case JRO) are often too 'close', intellectually or emotionally to their creations to be able to spot mistakes, oversights, or just other points of view. If JRO hears those words spoken in a sarcastic tone when he sees his picture (excellently drawen/scripted, as always..), then the words, in context, are completely correct. The widespread use of the reversed form of "I couldn't care less" only seems to have happened in recent years, and is still an Americanism (though no doubt it'll happen over here in Britain sooner or later... *muttermuttercommonlanguageisacursemuttermutter* If this made no sense, then.. sorry I'm tired. LOL! I almost added "unless said sarcastically" but I just KNEW that no one (even JRO) is sarcastic about JRO's art. ;-) and there's a sad lack of tone of voice on the internet. I am a lurker here, but let me say now that I really admire the folks in this group -- your talent, humor, generosity, and ability to think spatially are outstanding! --SB James Mitchelhill wrote: > > On Sat, 13 Feb 1999 10:16:27 -0500, The Anthonys <pan...@bcpl.net> > wrote: > > >I'm with lizard. Dear SB,
Thankyou for your repost. You might consider entering your own
captions, on my frequent "Make A Caption" threads. When and if you
do, think about how people talk, to make the best caption.
Good luck,
JRO
Dear Elizabeth,
You really should keep current with the "Make A Caption" threads.
Good luck,
JRO

It has NOTHING to do with "grammar". It has NOTHING to do with "artistic freedom". It has to do with _logic_. The people who say "I could care less" never stopped to think about what it is they are _actually saying_. There's a similar case in Swedish. Lots of people say "everybody is not here yet", when what they really mean to say is "not everybody is here yet" (the first version means "nobody is here yet", the second means "at least one person is not here yet", BIG difference!). Sure, you know what they mean, from the situation, and because it's often said that way, but it's still WRONG! -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.' Well, Gee! Let's see here. JRO lives in his hometown in America. Hmmmm? So,
that means he is writing in the style of where he lives or places that he
has either seen, heard of, or been. He writes for himself and shares it with
others.
SO if he wanted to write WORLDLY, he could. However, he doesn't becasue he
isn't from WORLDLY, he is from his hometown. DUH!
Would the idiots please come back down to their planet. I mean that is why
there is differnt languages, slangs, lingos, and versions of the same
things. I don't think that when Led Zeppelin wrote their first 3 albums that
they were writing for Americans to understand. They were English. That is
why they say, "Barr all day" in a song called 'Hey Hey What Can I Do.' It
doesn't mean squat to us, but it does to them. It is a saying that the
British used.
Stop being stupid and looking for things to be critical about. You will live
longer.
AND FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU, LEARN THIS: "IT IS OK TO LET PEOPLE BE WRONG ONCE
IN A WHILE!"
Think about it.
Sorry everyone.

It's not logical precisely because the people never stopped to think about what they were saying. Generally, in conversational speech, people don't, mainly because they simply don't have time to. The average gap between speaking 'turns' in conversation is a lot less than a second. So people are either speaking or listening for almost all the time. However, the conversation doesn't have to be logical in order to be successful; the purpose of conversation is generally to open and maintain relationships, and to express feelings and opinions. The words are just the mechanism used to do this. Getting it 'wrong' isn't detrimental to the conversation generally. >There's a similar case in Swedish. Lots of people say "everybody is not >here yet", when what they really mean to say is "not everybody is here >yet" (the first version means "nobody is here yet", the second means "at >least one person is not here yet", BIG difference!). Sure, you know what >they mean, from the situation, and because it's often said that way, but >it's still WRONG! If you understand what it means, why does it matter? Anybody speaking is attempting to communicate an idea, and if the idea is understood, then the communication has, by definition, been successful. The choice between using the formal or informal version of a saying communicates more information about the person (ie. the level of formality in their relationship to their intended audience) than if they limited themself to the formal version. I hate to give you people an English lesson, but it's clear you need it.
Firstly: you might check your Webster's and/or your Webster's Thesaurus. I
think you are going to find that the adverb "less", although usually used in
a quantifying manner, it can also be used as a qualifying one. Thus, the
modification of the verb "could" is made by "less"; less being used in
such context as to indicate "negative".
Using "could not (or couldn't) care less" would have been double-
negative. "Less" would have been superfluous. For example:
"I could not care where you go"
"I couldn't care where you go"
vs
"I could care less where you go"
"I could care little where you go"
"I could care none where you go"
The use of "I couldn't care less where you go" would be the
same as:
"I could negatively care negatively where you go"
which is incorrect, whereas:
"I could care negatively where you go"
is the proper form.
Which makes more sense than all these rabid reposts to what
was just a cartoon, in the first place. If you don't think it's funny,
well, it is an old joke. Ignore it. If you liked it, I thank you, and
am happy you were entertained. If you're looking for an argument, go
somewhere else --- I don't like them on my cartoons, and wouldn't be
impressed, even if you were right. You may argue with me in email, all
you want, if you've got the nerve. Otherwise..... well,
Trouble the dragon in his lair, rather than the scholar at his books.
I just post cartoons for fun. I'd just as soon you didn't take
the fun out of them, by starting another one of these -typically AAA-
hostile arguments that make it distasteful for the readers, discouraging
to new talents, and spoil it for everyone. If you old irregulars spent
as much time making new pictures as you have posting incorrect (or even
correct) advice to me, then you'd have a lot more posts worth reading,
and some reposts that were worth reading, too.

Dear E.J.M,
I will accept this post as an apology, if you will
hereby disregard the precipitous, unduly harsh e-type
mail communication I sent to you the other day.
I was mad about the ugly, trashy argument that it
started on my cartoon thread, which I am sure you did
not intend to cause by your misplaced, but well-intended
correction of my cartoon caption.
I reiterate that "less" is also an adverb that can,
and is used to indicate a negative, as per most any
English text, dictionary, and thesaurus. Thus, my caption
is perfectly linguistically correct, not to mention
being the common usage.
Irregargless, I hereby publicly retract my e-type
mail to you, and humbly beseech your better nature to
forgive and forget its contents -- whether or whether
not you agree with my stated position of the captioned
phrase in question.
In addition, I would like to apologize for any
implicit reference to you I made in later reposts, of
being terminally menstrual. That was a discourteous
remark that I feel almost as much remorse about as the
e-comm I sent you....... Although I may let that descrip-
tion stand for others, to which it may more aptly apply.
Your friend,

Veronica Karlsson wrote in message <36C...@on.spammer>... >1. It's not about the English language. It's about logic. Gee, where is the logic in insisting that double-negatives are logical in a language where they demonstrably aren't? >2. Email sent to me as a response to somewhat heated debate in > newsgropus go straight to the rubbish heap. Since you seem to know that it's contents were in response to a heated debate about a language which I somehow doubt you truly understand, then I must logically assume that you did read it -- particularly in view of the fact that I also send you other email, which is not in response to any heated debates. Since you have obviously disregarded it, and/or the English lesson I also posted, I must assume that your insistence that your illogical argument is logical must be based on some kind of logic unique to Sweden. I hereby dub this new-found, reverse-type logic as "Swedish Logic", and the proponents thereof as members of the terro-sub-species "Homo Sapiens Logicus Swedus". ON THE OTHER HAND.... it is also a prime example of another kind of logic, which I have also seen employed many times, and which bears a remarkable and exact resemblance to "Swedish Logic". Both appear to disregard facts, mathematical equations, syntax, and even the ravings of mad witch doctors. That type of logic, of course, would be "Female Logic". The propitious proponents who propound this type of logic make up a large proportion of the human species. They are characterized by their decisive but dubious deductions, declarative discourse without deliberation, and by their dearth of daft demands. They may be recognized easily, for when pressed for an explanation of their suppositions, they readily resort to the ridiculous reply: because. >I could just as easily have made my examples in Swedish, but I doubt you >would have understood what I meant if I had. I'm glad you didn't, as I certainly would NOT have understood them. Since you also seem to insist that double-negatives are correct and proper in the English language, I logically infer that although it may be correct in your native language (assuming that you do understand it correctly), your understanding of the usage of such phrases is not complete in the English language. So, perhaps this will help----- A negative ---- meaning no A double-negative ---- meaning no twice on the same verb For instance: No, please don't go. <------ correct No, no please don't go <------ rhythmically interesting, but technically incorrect Or: I could care less <------- correct (and also most commonly used) I could not care less <------- incorrect Why? because "I" could care...... How much? Less. None. Not at all. Zip. If "I" could not (or the contraction couldn't) care less...... then how much couldn't "I" care? I could not care not again? No..... Look at it this way: not ------- negative less ------- negative I could care negative. vs. I could negative care negative. <-------- oopps Or I could care -. vs. I could - care -. <--------- oopps again If this still doesn't help, you may argue that the double-negative is kerrect, by using either "Swedish" and/or "Female" logic and apply the age old reason "because". >> Man! <edited because it looks like intended didn't understand it completely enough to respond properly>

Use of the adverb less does not qualify as a negative in the context of a double negative. In fact, in the case of, say, getting lobbed with rotten tomatoes, less is a positive. It simply means "not as much." And don't get me started on when to use fewer instead of less.... menopausally (but wide awake in English class) yours, --SB
Veronika, how about ... "I couldn't care less (than I do) because I love you so much ... " :-)))) or, for that matter, "I could care (even) less, but I don't give a darn as it is" :-)))) So it *is* the context and effectiveness of communcation that matter ... however, in the case you discuss, I'd say you're quite right :-), it's simply a mistake. Otherwise, English tends to be quite a logical language, compared to the e.g. south slavic languages that I know. For example, double negation (resulting in NEGATION) are quite common and even correct here - not so in English. Like "nobody is not here" means nobody is here :-) ... I have quite a kick with my kids discussing this (and explaining how it doens't work in English). Let me finish with an old joke. One man said to another he was not worth a dog's piss. He was offended and sued. The court made the first one to apologize. So he said, o.k., I'm sorry, you ARE worth a dog's piss :-))) Take care, Zoran (Please any replies to my personal address, I don't follow newsgroups regularly ... )
OK, everyone back to drawing before I let this bad boy out and do some
damage.
Sometime these threads can be fun and a learning experience, but this one
has lost it's appeal for both things. From now on, if you don't like
someone's words, ignore it or make your own cartoon. *smiling*

I'm afraid I'm going to disagree here.
I could care less.
the same as
I do care, and there is the possibility of my caring less should the
situation arise.
In order for it to be possible for one to care less, they must care.
I couldn't care less. / I could not care less.
I am at the lowest extent of caring. There is no way I could possibly have
any less caring for the situation. I care the least amount possible, ie not
at all.
If you don't care, there is no less caring you could do, so therefore I
couldn't care less is correct.
And I speak British English, I'm from England.. and I'm male --- so I won't
have you accusing me of using Swedish or Female logic!!! :o)
*However* we all knew and understood the meaning of the line in Johnny's
cartoon... but in other instances the lack of a not can cause much
confusion. I *am* on alt.ascii-art. I *am not* on alt.ascii-art. Hmm.
That's my 2pence (nice British money there!) on this arguement...

Not "logjam", "lagom". > I do not think it unique to just "Swedus Logicus", however. It is commonly > known the world over as "Female Logic", or "Feminis Logicus". Oh, no, it's not. It's a special thing that can only be found in Swedish. Not in any other language. If you say that it exists in English then you just haven't _understood_ it yet. There's nothing feminine about it either. In fact it was invented by beer-drinking men who wanted to pass a big mug of beer around the table. Everybody should be able to get a share but when the mug came back to the top again there should be nothing left in it. To make this work each person at the table had to make a perfect judgement of how much to drink. Here are some links on the subject: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/4645/sid4.html http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/4030/swede.html "Not too much and not too little" is over-simplifying this. Just think, there wouldn't be so many explanations about this on the web if it was that simple... Sometimes lagom can mean "More than you have on that plate!", sometimes it can mean "Nothing, please!". http://kagg19.kagg.gy-edu.kalmar.se/~mp96brbj/purpose/ebot.html http://www.bahnhof.se/~johanl/middle/lagom.html Lagom is a Swedish word, very difficult to translate. "Lagom is best" we say, meaning it is not too good. "Lagom is best" we say, meaning things are the way they should be. But no more than that. http://www.fek.su.se/Home/gus/PAPERS/Swedval.htm "The word itself is untranslatable. It refers to an undefined state between extremes, "not too much, not too little". The dictionary suggest "just right, just enough, sufficiently, adequate, fitting, appropriate, moderate", which hardly captures the inner subjective logic of this genuinely Swedish value." Listen up Mr JRO, I will say this only once! > | No, please don't go. <------ correct > | > | No, no please don't go <------ rhythmically interesting, but > | technically incorrect That's not a valid example. The 'no' is an interjection. It doesn't bind lexically with the second clause (beginning 'please'). Therefore: 'no, no, please don't go' is permissible but you need that comma. Also note that however many times you add 'no', it does not affect the meaning. This is a different case to 'not', where a phrase such as 'Please don't not go' means 'Please do go' (but is a pretty ugly construction!). > | I could care less <------- correct (and also most commonly used) > | > | I could not care less <------- incorrect You're totally wrong there. If you couldn't care less then you're at the lowest possible level of caring, i.e. you don't care. If you COULD care less than you obviously do care. Whether it is commonly used does not affect how 'correct' it is. -- Paul GPF University of East Anglia.
How did you git a job, without keepin' any refernce books?

It's pretty interesting that you don't remember my cartoon, but you do remember the

for you if you let it die. I'm not really an are-teest, you know. I don't have a beanie,

I post askee ones, because I have time on my hands to do so, for reasons you'll probably

I'm glad to hear you've got enough ability to get a job. At least it keeps you off the

Cybersyphilitic (if you could spell that - gold star for such a long word, though): similarly nope. Double-digit IQ? Last time I checked it was 129. I'm not petty enough to ask for yours. > I actual do really 'preciate you startin' this shit on your own thread. > That were real nice of you. Fer that, I do thank yah. Thought it might be less confusing :) I wasn't criticising your cartoon in the first place. To be honest I can't even remember it. You are clearly artistically talented and I'm not going to suggest that /you/ should 'get a life' - which, incidentally, I do have. Intelligence and fun are not mutually exclusive. However you seem to be the one who spends too much time on Usenet. Byee! -- Paul.
> If you need help spelling long words, I'll be glad to give you a hand. And I'll do the same for you, should you ever need help with sarcasm. > You fail to deny being a dumbfuck; I'm going to leave that one alone... That actually made me laugh. I haven't heard the old 'didn't deny it so it must be true' since leaving school. It was a common playground retort. > It's probably best for you if you let it die. In light of the above, I'd say 'best for all involved'... Anyway, this has gone even farther off topic and since you aim to change my valid (if pedantic) correction into a tedious war of insults, I'll drop the thread on the assumption that you see my point and do likewise. Time to play pool and have fun. Bye! -- Paul.

I won't need any help with sarcasm, I can assure you. You were the one impressed by large lexiconia. Maybe you should stay off playgrounds. It's clear you're the kind of kid that starts shit, and then can't take the heat. You correction was valid. Maybe you ought to email me the next one, instead of starting a rude off-topic thread on a picher news group. You don't see me trying to correct people's positive posts. My advice is to make pichers, if you are going to post to a picher newsgroup. English topics can go to alt-English, and rude interruptions can go to alt-flame. Valid connerbewshuns ere welcome; resurrecting some portion of a dead thread that was nothing but ugly garbage reposted to my cartoon by idiots who just wanted to drag me down to their level and bludgeon me to death with superior experience are not. I won't (and didn't) do that to you, and I can see no reason for you to do that to me.
