It depends on what part of the country you're talking about, where I grew up, in Gelderland (mid-east of our country), we didn't do anything about it, farther to the south some people have even never heard of it. In the northern part (especially Groningen AFAIK) it is far more customary, but in my days (I always celebrated it with relatives in Groningen) we didn't dress up. BTW if you have Micro$oft Encarta you can hear part of a St. Martin's song in the "sights and sounds" section of the Netherlands (not that you care ;). @--Then, last year, there were trick-or-treaters knocking on my door.
I was brought up in a society where Halloween was unknown to and unheard of for most of us. That's why all these few years since we have moved to here in North
America, we have simply ignored all the trick-or-treaters knocking on our door. This year, however, my mom did prepare a whole box of lollipops ---and
ironically, only a few people came for their treats. It is because recently there have been a few attempts (despite failure) of kidnapping around the city, so
parents simply brought their kids to the shopping malls to get candies from the shops. Most of those who did come and knock on our door, though, were teens (or
even late teens). Some did not even say 'Happy Halloween' to you, but only uttered a barely audible 'Hi!' while expecting you to automatically surrender your
candies into their candy bags. So it didn't take long before even my mom (who is extremely fond of kids as long as they do not look & act like such 'old'
little girl as Jon Benet Ramsey) got tired of treating these candy-minded, tooth-decaying trick-or-treaters.
@--How is this different from halloween? Well, there is no blackmail

I am completely with you here Veronica ---this whole trick-or-treat business sounds so much like blackmail! If not blackmail, it's at least greed!

>Message-id: <39F...@hotmail.com> >It's extremely unusual that somebody won't give the Easter witches >anything. > >[I do, however, think that once a year is quite enough!] VK I had never heard of Easter witches before. And I can now understand your reluctance at accepting an Americanized Halloween tradition in your country -- kids already travel door-to-door for treats. I'd probably feel the same way if Santa Claus decided to make a second appearance in a year. BTW, at my house, if any kids want a treat at Halloween, they have to first perform a "trick" of some kind. ie: sing a song, perform a special skill, etc. We also attend church services the day after Halloween to celebrate All Saints' Day. It isn't a completely greedy, heathenistic time of the year. But sadfully, I cannot speak for everyone. It's very interesting reading about holiday customs -- and how different they are. This is truly an International newsgroup! (even though we do write in English most of the time) ;) And before someone flies off the handle and suggests that we take this conversation to alt.holidays or whatever, let me say that this DOES relate to our newsgroup. I've made lots of ASCII art pictures -- but not one Easter Witch. I hadn't heard of them. I'll bet that there are other such holiday items too. I suppose I might've been able to learn about them if I had done some research on how countries celebrate holidays. I could probably do some research now -- but it might be kindof difficult not knowing what I'm looking for. (for example, I wouldn't look for St. Martin's Day either) Certainly, our school systems don't dwell on foreign customs. That's a very good analogy. Exactly like that. American shop owners might find the idea of Christmas twice a year interesting, and of course the kids would love it. Maybe you should import the Swedish Easter witches...? [no, I'm not entirely serious] > It's very interesting reading about holiday customs -- and how > different they are. This is truly an International newsgroup! Yes. I guess that was the real point behind my first comment. Somebody was complaining that people weren't showing any interest in the subject and my reaction was to lash out. This has more to do with the way "halloween" is "celebrated" in Sweden (a 100% commercial thing!) and has nothing to do with how *halloween* is celbrated in any other country. IOW, just because *you* find holiday X very fascinating there's no reason why everybody else, especially in an international place like this, should be equally enthusiastic. > (even though we do write in English most of the time) ;) And? You want a 2nd appearance of Santa Claus? Come to Holland! On December 6th we celebrate Sinterklaas (pronounced roughly as "cinder class" :-)), the origin of the person of Sinterklaas is the same (a Spanish bishop) and we exchange prezzies. But traditionally on Christmas we have only a tree, food and a lot of Christmas spirit :-)) However, Christmas in Holland gets more and more Americanised, Santa Claus takes Sinterklaas' place, the exchanging of gifts gets postponed until Christmas and some people even give presents at both Sinterklaas and Christmas! By tradition, santa Claus, Halloween and Valentine's day have no place in Holland. A few years ago i never would have thought i'd hear myself say this, but i think that many (not every) country's traditions are something to be kept... well... pure (by lack of another word). I find myself valuing the traditional Dutch holidays more the older i get. -- Peter Punk \ / ---\\\\--- / \ Draai je V3.0 al van de SETI@home client? http://home.hetnet.nl/~setiathomegroep/index.html voor tips, antwoorden, discussies. links, downloads en meer. 331wu/6228hrs A critic is a man who knows the way, but can't drive the car.
Joan, VK doesnt like the newly acquired halloween in her country...SO???? A solution for her: dont participate here in aaa or in your daily life, as with any belief, tradition, religion etc. And rather than educating HERSELF on this one tradition, celebrated in many different ways around the world, she flames the tradition because her country just recently incorporated this new 'thang' and she does not like it. And that is ok, but what is NOT ok, is her ignorance to others here, with no knowledge base. Its rude. It would be interesting for her to draw something indigenous to her homeland, a tradition, and see the response here. Judging from the various cultures represented here and their manners, I am sure they would not FLAME her, but find it interesting. As posted in various threads about Halloween, people have different customs, mine similar to yours, concentrating more on the "All Hallows" tradition with religion as its base. So now she tells YOU to go do some research on other holiday traditions and appease the united nations, YOU, Joan, go educate yourself of other cultures' traditions and YOU, Joan, make some drawings of various holidays celebrated throughout the world. Obviously, VK declined to educate herself about Halloween and various ways it is celebrated. All she saw was ME ME ME, its in MY COUNTRY, OH GAWD, WE ALREADY HAVE CANDY THIEVES ONCE A YEAR! But, in traditional VK'ism, she turns her lack of knowledge into a finger pointing arena, stating you, joan, are the one lacking in knowledge, instructing YOU to go get educated in different customs. VK wishes to see international ascii drawings for her OWN amusement, some of which she will like and others she will flame, i.e. halloween: VK Quote: > >Definitely! I have already posted some Lucia pictures in the past and I > >have seen some pictures here related to some Dutch (?) holiday, and > >jewish holidays, and "valentines day", and other days that are not > >celebrated in Sweden ... Most of it Good Stuff! :-) Halloween is not included in her 'most of it good stuff' statement, so therefore flamed the tradition without HER doing any research and educating HERSELF of this one tradition celebrated, in different ways in various parts of the world. But, jeez, there is good ascii stuff somewhere, if it might appeal to her. Since when did this become "alt.for-VK-VIEWING-PLEASURE-ONLY?????? Jesus on the cross, angels, cartoon characters, menorahs, swastikas, whatever. Do we all really need to be constantly challenged about our likes or beliefs, on a newsgroup such as ascii art???? I believe there are other forums for point-counter-point. There are many holidays jointly celebrated, worldwide, some of which her country does not observe. It is obvious she just cant help but spew distaste at various cultures and traditions. The whole world is made up of thousands and thousands of traditions, and I am sure not all of us understand, agree or embrace them. But, they should not be belittled or ridiculed. be well always, Pru Spunk1111 <spu...@aol.comQQ> wrote in message news:200...@ng-fu1.aol.com... > >Message-id: <3A0...@hotmail.com> > >Maybe you should import the Swedish Easter > >witches...? > > What an idea... but I'm afraid they might get lost > amidst all the Easter bunnies, chicks, ducklings, > eggs, baskets, egg hunts, and the religious aspects > of the holiday. As I read it, VK was rejecting Halloween primarily not because it was foreign, but because it involves blackmail. And I think she's perfectly entitled to have such an opinion. Just being entrenched in a particular country or society doesn't make a tradition morally acceptable. For example, some countries have traditions of female circumcision. I could do some ObAscii of that, but somehow I don't think it would be very entertaining. -- Matthew `mpt' Thomas, Mozilla user interface QA ASCII art FAQ: http://cantua.canterbury.ac.nz/~mpt26/art/ascii/faq/

Oh, and that's not even taking into account that in order to get room for this "new tradition" an old, and very serious tradition has been thrown out (yes, I say "thrown out", because, AFAIK, people *still* can't be in several places at once!). I guess selling grave candles doesn't give as big profits as selling candy and ghost costumes. I guess it doesn't matter to these shop owners that "some religious nuts" (read: that majority of the population who is A: Christian and B: old enough to have known somebody who is now dead) are offended by kids dressed up in Carnival clothes knocking on their doors when they are actively mourning dead friends and relatives... [And now that it's all over for this time, yes, I saw two trick-or-treaters. No I didn't give them a lecture. The weather yesterday was so lousy that I felt sorry for them! I didn't give them any candy, I just said "no thanks" and closed the door.] -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.'
