What happened a couple of years ago was that one started to see tables with "ghost" stuff in some shops. Then it started to appear in advertising. Then, last year, there were trick-or-treaters knocking on my door. > > The kids love it, of course - suddenly > >Easter comes twice a year! > > Do kids wear scary costumes and go door-to-door on Easter > in Sweden? <g> Yes. [more specifically, they dress up as "Easter witches": http://w1.522.telia.com/~u52207882/rpask99.JPG http://home.swipnet.se/holmers/lizasofi.jpg http://w1.863.telia.com/~u86302829/bilder/karring-ani.gif http://www.tordata.se/mallbacken/images/pask.gif http://www.torget.se/shopping/panduro/LEVEL1/LEVEL2/PAND_PASK/limage/712477b.jpg http://home.swipnet.se/~w-55604/bilder/eastern_niklas.jpg http://home.swipnet.se/harmozo/illus/pask_small.jpg http://www.cube.icestorm.net/ingie/ea3.jpg http://www.cube.icestorm.net/ingie/ea2.jpg http://www.cube.icestorm.net/ingie/blakulla.html http://home5.swipnet.se/~w-55148/bilder/stina.jpg http://www.ypi.gu.se/perso/homebp/imgs/eastelli.JPG http://home.swipnet.se/gia/img4.gif http://home3.swipnet.se/~w-37017/pix/karring.jpg http://home.swipnet.se/~w-39336/sk4wv/tiv.jpg OK, so maybe most of them are more cute than "scary", but that doesn't make it any less *fun*!] > I'm sure you meant the candy part... Yes. Plenty of candy. Often more than a kid can carry! > but do they go-door-to-door? Yes. [More specifically, the witches knock on the door, the door opens, the witches give the person behind the door an "Easter letter" and say "Happy Easter!". Then they get candy, or money, or sometimes (yuck!) fruit ("yuck!" because it's too bloody heavy! Of course, *they* think they're "helping" the kids by giving them "healthy" stuff, but all they really do is make the kids' feet hurt! There's no way one kid can eat 40 oranges, 20 apples, 25 bananas, etc, etc, before it all goes bad!). How is this different from halloween? Well, there is no blackmail involved. The children give away "easter letters", which are spring related pictures that they have drawn (drawing these "letters" is a project that takes several weeks). In return they get candy. They give away something and get something back. They tell you that spring is coming. It's all positive and fun and there is no "Give Me, Or Else!"] > My kids hunt for easter baskets > in the house -- and there is some candy in the baskets... This is a tradition I have never heard about. I think Swedish kids would be VERY disappointed if this was all they were allowed to do at Easter! > not as much as what they might haul in on Halloween though. It's extremely unusual that somebody won't give the Easter witches anything. [I do, however, think that once a year is quite enough!] -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.' (/ `. / ||``._.'
