You want a 2nd appearance of Santa Claus? Come to Holland! On December 6th we
celebrate Sinterklaas (pronounced roughly as "cinder class" :-)), the origin of
the person of Sinterklaas is the same (a Spanish bishop) and we exchange
prezzies. But traditionally on Christmas we have only a tree, food and a lot of
Christmas spirit :-))

However, Christmas in Holland gets more and more Americanised, Santa Claus takes
Sinterklaas' place, the exchanging of gifts gets postponed until Christmas and
some people even give presents at both Sinterklaas and Christmas!

By tradition, santa Claus, Halloween and Valentine's day have no place in
Holland. A few years ago i never would have thought i'd hear myself say this,
but i think that many (not every) country's traditions are something to be
kept... well... pure (by lack of another word). I find myself valuing the
traditional Dutch holidays more the older i get.
