Re: Halloween

Re: Halloween

Veronica Karlsson <asc...@hotmail.com> a ecrit dans son message:

@--Well, until about two or three years ago halloween was something you
@--only read about in English lessons, along with "the American
@--government", "the Brittish government", "the tea tradition", "in what
@--countries do people speak English?" and similar, boring topics. What
@--happened a couple of years ago was that one started to see tables with
@--"ghost" stuff in some shops. Then it started to appear in advertising.
@--Then, last year, there were trick-or-treaters knocking on my door.

I was brought up in a society where Halloween was unknown to and unheard of for most of us. That's why all these few years since we have moved to here in North
America, we have simply ignored all the trick-or-treaters knocking on our door. This year, however, my mom did prepare a whole box of lollipops ---and
ironically, only a few people came for their treats. It is because recently there have been a few attempts (despite failure) of kidnapping around the city, so
parents simply brought their kids to the shopping malls to get candies from the shops. Most of those who did come and knock on our door, though, were teens (or
even late teens). Some did not even say 'Happy Halloween' to you, but only uttered a barely audible 'Hi!' while expecting you to automatically surrender your
candies into their candy bags. So it didn't take long before even my mom (who is extremely fond of kids as long as they do not look & act like such 'old'
little girl as Jon Benet Ramsey) got tired of treating these candy-minded, tooth-decaying trick-or-treaters.

@--How is this different from halloween? Well, there is no blackmail
@--involved. The children give away "easter letters", which are spring
@--related pictures that they have drawn (drawing these "letters" is a
@--project that takes several weeks). In return they get candy. They give
@--away something and get something back. They tell you that spring is
@--coming. It's all positive and fun and there is no "Give Me, Or Else!"]

I am completely with you here Veronica ---this whole trick-or-treat business sounds so much like blackmail! If not blackmail, it's at least greed!
