This is a smiley face made by Caitlin Woodward, 9 and a half years old.
This is my first ASCII picture. I borrowed the circle from the pegasus

Then you thought wrong! Usenet is an adult medium.

Usenet newsgroups are for adults not children. I suggest you read or
re-read all the introductory Usenet info postings and FAQs about
Usenet which should be read by all Usenet newsgroup users before
they post articles.

The FAQs etc. get posted regularly to "news.answers"; "*.answers";
and "news.newsusers.questions". Many ISPs have these documents in
their archives and advise new account holders to read them.

The children who post here on alt.ascii-art have clearly not seen
or understood these documents and are apparently have unsupervised
access to the Net through home or school computers.

Nothing has happened to the freedom for anyone to use this or any
other unmoderated newsgroup...that's why children are posting here.
If they are being advised, educated in using newsgroups, and
supervised in using the Net that's not so bad but it still does
not negate the fact that Usenet and its newsgroups are an adult
medium! Harumph!

And...remember...it was Sarah Day herself who originated the "Public
medium" thread and she asked people here NOT to swear and post nudes
becsue little kids might be reading this group. I have no doubt that
they are reading it!

OK...point taken...but part of my tone/manner-of-speech was quite
deliberate to emphasize that Usenet newsgroups are adult newsgroups
and the language and manner of speech is adult.

I doubt whether a 9 year old could have any clue about "Usenet";
"hierarchies"; "netiquette" and all the rest of the jargon.

Usenet is not here to cater for, and educate, children who
apparently gain access to computers either at home and at school
without supervision.

Children clearly find the "alt.ascii-art" newsgroup...see
pictures...and think " Ooooh funny pictures, I can do funny pictures "
and jump in.

In my view children using Usenet newsgroups should be supervised by
someone because many newsgroups are just not suitable for children
and those in charge of them are quick to attack Usenet and its adult
users if their children get exposed to unsuitable material.

Bottom line is that I think we should discourage children from using
alt.ascii-art...it is not a children's newsgroup! i'm sure others
will disagree with me but that is what Usenet and newsgroups are all
about...individual opinions!

Er...this is an adult newsgroup...should you be reading it?

All Usenet newsgroups are adult.

There is a special K12 newsgroup hierarchy for school children. If
you don't know what a "newsgroup hierarchy" or "Usenet newsgroups"
means ask your Mum or schoolteacher.

And try reading and studying the Ascii Art FAQ ( Frequently Asked
Questions ) which is being posted to this newsgroup right now.

The FAQ was really written for adults though, not children, so it
may be hard to understand especially if you know little about Usenet
and newsgroups.

Colin, next time, remember ur talking to a child. I resent your manner of
speech. If I would read such a post about something I've created, I
would b very hurt , and I'm 20. The fact that she's 9, does not mean u can

You'd be better addressing those comments to Sarah Day...not to
me...you actually snipped my words referring to Sarah, viz:

And look at their posting add...@uswest.net...doesn't
that suggest that they are both kids or schoolchildren possibly
posting from a school account or maybe even a home account
sanctioned by their parents?

So...it was Sarah Day, not me, who posted that "Public channel"
message about not posting swearwords or nudes because little kids
might be reading it...and she was not even referring to JPGs, GIFs
and other pictures...she was referring to what was being posted
here...including the swearwords and rudeness from Mepha.

My viewpoint is different.

I happen to think that children should be supervised if they are
allowed Net access. I think that many are not. Also children simply
cannot handle adult flamewars that they might quite unintentionally
provoke with their postings. The Net is not a pretty place akin to
Fairyland and those who survive need a rhinoceros' hide. The Net is
not for the tender and sensitive.

People who participate in Usenet newsgroups should be adult and my
definition of adult would probably be: a person who is fully and
solely responsible for their own actions and for the consequences of
their actions. Children are usually not in that category.

As I've said many times...anyone can post anything they choose to
post on unmoderated newsgroups but there can be consequences that
they then have to deal with. Freedom has its price in the
consequences arising from its use.

Now then...

Not everyone can access the newsgroup "alt.binaries.pictures.ascii"

How many people actually do their postings in the nude?

I agree there r posts here that children should not c and that their
parents / schoolteachers/ other adults should supervised their use of the
internet (BTW, i don't c how a 9 years old we learn to post to Usenet
without a supervision and a guide....), but that DOES NOT mean we should
treat them badly when they do that. and not their fault for not knowing
the Usenet is for adults....(BTW, which age is considered an adult?).

better. If she does not understand all the terms u mentioned, I think she
wouldn't understand y this mean stranger is so bad to her just bcz she
drawed a nice little (well...big) picture. telling kids what to do is not
teaching them.

I think Colin did it good enough... I'm still wondering why the Kid
posted his fixed version as a response to his own thread :-? As a 9
year old kid I would start a new thread.

So maybe it also crossposted to the K12 ascii-art newsgroup? ;)
Possibly a adult is already helping her... *just a thought* Anyway,
the pic neat enough to post.

I don't think people should use language that is too strong on newsgroups,
but might also add that stuff like that would only be accessible at home.
They have things on school computers to prohibit looking at anything that
would be considered too much for kids that age (even if we are talking about
pics of ancient greek statues that 7th graders need for a report, which I
think is overdoing it a little....never mind).Thank you for reading my
largely pointless message. :^)

you may think the same of bar-rooms and streets. It's not your business
to dictate what people say and that's that: they are not children.

agreed; schools can take what steps they think necessary
to make an environment specifically for children not adults.

I gave my definition in an earlier posting in the "Public Channel"
thread.

" A person who is not totally, and solely, responsible for their own
actions and the consequences of those actions. "

Most children are not in that category and even some adults beyond
puberty are not in that category either. In that context age in years
is irrelevant.

However, like I said, others will disagree with me. And they do...all
the time! :-)

I don't think the numbers matter; anybody who can't behave as an adult
and will be upset if a normal range of adult topics are discussed.

This probaly includes some people with a physical age over 40 :->.

Well now _that_ alone can be one _helluva_ responsibility to pay the
traffic and time bill at the end of every month.

Some guys think nothing of $200/300 monthly and I'm certainly not
surprised they are blase' about it if their mothers are shelling out
every month! Yikes! What a life some people have these days! :-(

And some people get Freebie Accounts at their place of employment or
education...bully for them...but, then when the leave they grizzle and
snuffle saying they can't afford to continue with their Net access.
Bleah! do you think that my handerchief becomes soaked with
crocodile tears at the thought of their deprivation and sudden
departure?

Where I live and sit I have to pay all my own ISP bills...$31 June;
$34 July, and those are big numbers for me...less than $20 monthly
would be my average bill.

I never said that.

You asked me for my definition of a child. Age in
years is not important but responsibility for one's own actions and
their consequences is important irrespective of age in years.

If you can handle Usenet's adult newsgroups then OK...but Sarah Day
was telling people not to post nudes and foul language here because
little kids might be watching. That particular thread she started,
"This is a public channel" is what sparked all this discussion off.
I think you were away from this newsgroup at the time.

Sarah and Robin Day are very obviously children and so was a 9 year
old who posted a picture here recently.

30 GBP/quarter = 10 GBP/month = NZ$30/month = US$15/month.
That is a very good deal if you have unlimited time.

What about traffic costs for transfers/downloads etc. are they extra
cost? I pay $2.75 to $4 per Mb for all traffic, both outgoing _and_
incoming, depending on the time of day.

That sounds like me...I'm a real cheapskate by choice and nature. :-)

Yes, it is Sarah and Tony Day, but now it is just Sarah Day. If it is so
obvious that the two of us are children, would you like to guess just how
young we are? This should prove amusing. Some people before have actually
guessed I was 30.

Oh yeah, I guess I should add some ascii....it is supposed to be a dragon,
in case you can't tell, which would be easy with this pic.

Ok, I can handle it... I`m quite mature enough to see bad language and not go
around using it, and I can see nudity and not go and (hey, what is this 'nudity'
supposed to make you do?)
Sorry for firing at you Colin, I was a little peaved with a certain character by
the name of 'Bungle' when I wrote it and I was wrong to take that out on you.

|30 GBP/quarter = 10 GBP/month = NZ$30/month = US$15/month.
|That is a very good deal if you have unlimited time.
|
|What about traffic costs for transfers/downloads etc. are they extra

Once the quarterly subscription is paid, the only other thing that needs paying
it the telephone bill. All uploads and downloads are no extra charge.

If you like you can find out about my ISP at http://www.vossnet.co.uk/online/.

My mum`s work have this transfer fee thing that you describe... I think it`s a
real weird way of doing things IMHO ... but if it`s like that then that`s the
way it is.
