Then you thought wrong!  Usenet is an adult medium.

Usenet newsgroups are for adults not children. I suggest you read or 
re-read all the introductory Usenet info postings and FAQs about 
Usenet which should be read by all Usenet newsgroup users before 
they post articles. 

The FAQs etc. get posted regularly to "news.answers"; "*.answers";
and "news.newsusers.questions". Many ISPs have these documents in 
their archives and advise new account holders to read them.

The children who post here on alt.ascii-art have clearly not seen
or understood these documents and are apparently have unsupervised
access to the Net through home or school computers.

Nothing has happened to the freedom for anyone to use this or any 
other unmoderated newsgroup...that's why children are posting here.
If they are being advised, educated in using newsgroups, and 
supervised in using the Net that's not so bad but it still does
not negate the fact that Usenet and its newsgroups are an adult 
medium!  Harumph!

And...remember...it was Sarah Day herself who originated the "Public 
medium" thread and she asked people here NOT to swear and post nudes 
becsue little kids might be reading this group. I have no doubt that 
they are reading it!
