I needed to slim down an ascii-art I got somewhere so that I could use it,
because it was 27 lines. I'm not too good with ascii-art, so I just wrote

Neat, eh? it works like an image scaler, though, so you don't gain detail
as you increase size, and as you decrease size you lose some of the
letters.

Dos:
http://www.bignet.net/~thekid39/resize.exe
Unix (C source):
http://www.bignet.net/~thekid39/resize.c

to run:
resize percent < input file > output file

Neat indeed, thanks, that is a brilliant little proggie and it works
well.

I have written myself a little batch file, and named it SIZE.BAT, to
save me typing the command line when I want to use your resize prog:

-----------------------------------------------------------
SIZE.BAT
: Uses the program resize.exe written by sti...@mindless.com
: %1 is the required new percentage size of the picture
: %2 is the name of the input file to be resized
: %2.%1 is the name of the resized output file produced
resize %1 < %2 > %2.%1
------------------------------------------------------------

I think Bob Allison (Scarecrow) in 1993 use to have access to a
utility that did picture size reductions.

Do you have a good C Compiler? I have C source code for a proggie
that rotates ASCII pictures through 90 degree positions but I cannot

I'm really sorry but this is one of the poorest (and pointless)
programs I have ever seen relating to ASCII. If it re-sampled I could
see a vague use but, as is, it simply removes columns and rows of
characters.!?
Besides, I think this form of "ASCII art" (and I use the term loosely)
is utter crap and should be refered to as something else (like: "ANSI
art" without any ANSI!). (or talent!)

:nathaN

P.S. no dis-respect to sTiLe intended.

That's the exact same way your little gif-scalers work, my friend. Say you
ant it double sized, it just doubles every pixel and doubles every row. If
you want it half size it gets every other pixel of every other row. My
program does just that. What's resampling anyway?

You'll note that I mentioned the ascii art there wasn't mine to start
with, I'm just not good enough to resize it myself, so I wrote this little
thing.

Oh. Hmm, just disrespect to the program and how I wrote it? ;)

What have you got to offer that's better. I'm genuinely interested

You can merge some letters--"l" and a hyphen can make a "t" in some fonts.

What I meant by this was, say you're going to resize it to 33%%.. you're
going to have some awful strange stuff going on with a third of this one
and half of that one...

That sounds like the way to go, were I to want to do resampling. Perhaps
it'd help ascii pictures out some, but all I wanted was a little quickie
program, and that's what I got. Take it or leave it :) I don't have time
to mess with the bitmap stuff at all :)

What excellent ASCII progs are you talking about?

Do you know of an ASCII-art prog which re-samples to your satisfaction?
Which ASCII-art prog resizes?
Do you know of an ASCII-art prog which re-samples _and_ re-sizes, perhaps?

My granddad was some sort of a sysop on a mainframe. They made pretty neat pics
of Apollo, Mona Lisa and Playboy bunnies, back then.
I used to stick print outs of those to my bedroom wall...

When ANSI was released my dad made full-color (wow!) log-in screens for his BBS.

Now I draw sigs to put in my mails.

Then there was you...

I wrote it cause I needed it and thought this group might like it.

Sure you can...

A good program might take a 'b' and a double quote '"' and render them
together as the number '8' or a capital 'B', should this need arise.

Or, perhaps a fes lines of 8's might be redone as:

88888888 oooooo
88888888 resized: 888888 or 50%: 8888 or 25%: oo
88888888 75% 888888 8888 ""
88888888 """"""

Ok, prolly not the best examples. The best way might be for the program to
turn the ASCII artwork into a bitmap (perhaps, just a dump of the font
shapes and such so that the bitmap looks identical to the ASCII version),
re-scale the bitmap using the various averaging and anti-aliasing techniques
people use, and then converted back to an ASCII.

The conversion back to ASCII would be the hardest I guess. Perhaps such a
program could create a directly scaled version as in your original, and
create an ASCII-to-bitmap-to-ASCII version, and somehow use the first as
sort of a "layout" map..

Resampling is when a pixel colour (or in this case, a character) is chosen that
is midway between the pixels that are removed and the pixels that are kept, so
that a lot of the detail is retained. Lots of your big paint proggies can do
this, like Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop.

I think the resolution I had my DOS window at when I took the screengrab
affected the resize slightly, but you can make out the cow after resize ok so
now all we need is a program that can do this! I might have a go, I`ve already
made the first part of it (Put ascii art on screen as picture) in my ASC2PIC
program.

Not too good on reductions because it leaves gaps and spaces. It may
have a use in very slight enlargements up to 110%.

Here's Veronica again resized to 75% :

Huh? resize.exe is tiny...a mere 24004 bytes!

I have now used it quite a bit and it seems most useful for
reductions in the 75-95% range.

A big snag is that it munges/trims any words included or associated
with the picture so they have to edited later.

It is best with the big solid style pics using mainly just one
character like the '$' in this smiley face:

I will find it particularly useful for pictures posted with more than
76 columns where a reduction of between 90-98% is often sufficient
to reduce the picture width with minimum munge-ing.

RESIZE.EXE is a good little new proggie. I'm already finding it very
useful.

That's all? I guess I didn't realize that...
But I'm the person who has to delete cache
files and temp files in order to get online!

Oh I can't wait to get a new puter!!

Thanks for the info Colin!!

Actually I think that this program is kindof nifty. I'm sure that
there would be an interest in it... Just look at all the people who
are interested in the GIF2ASCII converters...

What I think would be most helpful is to have it available on the
net-- similar to the figlet programs-- people could just paste
their picture into the resizer, click a button and have it done
for them-- that would be very useful-- especially when
most people would need to resize just one or two pics-- they
wouldn't want to download the entire program... what
are the chances of that happening??

BTW, just how well does it work on the line style ASCII? (I saw Veronica's
mutation!)
I'm curious as to how it would work on, let's say the cockatoo
on my main index page?

|I think the resolution I had my DOS window at when I took the screengrab
|affected the resize slightly, but you can make out the cow after resize ok so
|now all we need is a program that can do this! I might have a go, I`ve already
|made the first part of it (Put ascii art on screen as picture) in my ASC2PIC
|program.
|
'----------------------------------

OK, my first step was to make a program that did only one size... it halfs the
size. If people like it, I may be tempted to make a program that does any
percentages like stile's proggy does. It also only really works on solid style
asciis... then again stiles program made line-asciis look funny too (although
mine gives worse results on lineart)

Here`s what the program does:

I used the same example pic:

                                       "$$$""""

becomes:
           -:::::::::::::,.     . , .
 ..,..   -:::-,-::::::,,::::-   ---:-

                   -::::=
                    .,..

as you can see the results arn`t brilliant... however I think it would be better
if it used a better GIFscii style 'greyscale' than it does.

All it does is take the pic, do what ASC2PIC does, then resamples the output and
effectivly 'GIFsciis' it... however my algorithm is the one from the ASC2BMP
proggy mentioned in the MINIFAQ which as you can see by the demo doesn`t produce
brilliant results itself... this is the algorithm:
 .,-=:;/+%$XH@M#

It goes white>black from left to right. Can anyone help me with a better
algoritm? It needs 16 shades from white to black.

(if anyone wants the program for a demo, email me but bear in mind its still WiP
and there`s a few bugs like the output is always 100x100 chars regardless of
asciiart size.

Martin, why don't you let dejanews

http://www.dejanews.com/home_ps.shtml

be your alt.ascii-art archive?

That should free up some space.

Well I know what that sort of situation is like because between 1992/96
I surfed the Net with a PC/XT with a mere 256K RAM, no graphics, a
green monochrome monitor and only a 20Mb hard disk of which about 8Mb was
taken up by someone elses files leaving me 12Mb to play with.

So I had to keep a daily watch on free disk space and shift heaps of
files on to 5.25" 360K floppy disks ( I now have zillions of those ).

Now I have a 486DX with a 500Meg hard disk of which 250Meg is still free
life is much easier but I still transfer a lot of files to floppy disks
of various capacities.

Freeing useable memory is more difficult because these modern programs,
particularly Windoze is a real memory gobbler.

I only use Windoze for programs that will only run in Windoze...
everything else I do either from shareware Dos-shell named "FileViewer"
or from the DOS prompt.

No one ever has enough memory or disk space for long...you just have to
make space somehow.

All my ascii-art archives are on 5.25" 360K floppies with the
exception of the latest additions which arrive daily and await
transfer to the disks.

There is a huge advantage in transferring data to floppy discs for
both space saving and security.

I have now had 4 hard disk crashes and every time has required
reformatting the hard disk and loss of all data on it. If you like
to risk losing your data and archives leave them sitting on your

Yep!

Yeah! But you keep mixing up "resizing" and "resampling".

   this is a 1-liner --> 8   b
                             " <-- this is a 2-liner

Let's define resizing as "adding or deleting rows and cols of chars"
(i know that's not an accurate definition).

  input filter | output
            delete cols
             | | | |
 88888888 88888888--dr 8888
 88888888 88888888 eo 8 8 8 8 8888
 88888888 88888888--lw
 88888888 88888888 .s 8 8 8 8

Let's define resampling as "lighter/darker" (...)

        light text on dark background
  light       <------------->       dark
 @@@@@@@@   88888888   ++++++++   ::::::::
 @@@@@@@@   88888888   ++++++++   ::::::::
 @@@@@@@@   88888888   ++++++++   ::::::::
 @@@@@@@@   88888888   ++++++++   ::::::::
  dark        <------------->       light
        dark text on light background

>Or, perhaps a fes lines of 8's might be redone as:

>88888888 resized: 888888 or 50%: 8888 or 25%: oo

                                     |
hmmm... fyi this is 25% ---------+
OK, that's cheesy...

But I really can't think of a way how to combine the "resizing" and the
"resampling" in order to get this output :(

ASCII-art is a "char"-map, not a pixelmap!

Did you ever try out what you're propagating?

A hard disk crash requiring a hard disk reformat would solve all
your problems...start with a nice totally clean machine again and
you can forget to reload all those nasty memory/diskspace gobblers
like Windoze, Netscape, Microsoft Outlook Express, Word for Windows
and all the rest of the bloated software jazz with bells and whistles.

Back to good old MS-DOS 6.0 and the MSDOSHELL or similar for all
your other work. A simple word processor like QEDIT and possibly
a web-browser like LYNX if your ISP does not provide a browser
on line. That's all you need plus some small utilities to do special
tasks like Unix/DOS file convertors, trailing-space trimmer,
emailer, resizer.exe and a printer driver proggie. Keep life simple
and backup essential material including your software proggies.

I have considered a Zip drive, US$150 approx and US$12 per 100Mb Zip disk.
However I have zillions of 5.25" floppies full of data and I can access
those in either my 486DX B: floppy drive or my PC/XT floppy drive...and
I use that PC/XT as my standby if the 486DX crashes...which it can and
has done so once in February. I'm not certain if I could run the Zip
Disk with my old 1986 PC/XT.

>Current HDD space: 11.2MB (after installing DJGPP today)

DJGPP? What's that? How do I manage to live without it?
How much memory does it gobble? And how much diskspace?

I made a resizer for solid style asciis (although at present it only does 50%
reduction) that turns the ascii into a picture (the was ASC2PIC does) and then
resamples (er, probably) to 50%. It then does a kinda GIFscii operation on it
and creates a really weird resize of the pic.

EEK! Don`t even suggest that... last time that happened I lost SOOOO much stuff!

I`ve got my system finely tuned to my specs, using a few programs I wrote plus a
few Windoze hacks to speed things up a little. I do keep things simplish, though
not as simple as you suggest!

I have Win95 with MSIE 4.0 and all that Jazz, and other than that it`s pretty
much run of the mill small apps. I use TextPad as a texted, WordPad as a word
processor (or sometimes I do my work in NotePad using HTML and print it from
MSIE *S*) and of course the obligatory mIRC+FTPx+Free Agent combo that makes up
my net apps arsenal.

Believe me, what I have on my hard disk now is almost bare minimum for the work
I do. My job requires me to have an up to date graphical browser (IE of course)
and the other programs sorta come with it!

When I get my zip drive I`ll move all of my backup .zip files (almost my entire
software collection was internet downloaded!) to a zip disk with will releive my
hard disk of..... 34MB plus I can move my work from school and job to another
disk and my 2MB ascii collection+all my other graphics to another which shold
free up quite a lot... then I can purge my newsgroup archive for some more
space..... hell I could have an almost empty HDD soon ('part from the 150MB
windoze takes up!)

Yes, you can see it has eight legs and is divided into
an abdomen plus cephaothorax. In fact the ten characters
present map to those ten elements, which is neat. I also
think it looks quite cute.

MARTIN: Please reduce your line width from 80 down to 76 coloumns or less!

Your resizer RESIZE.EXE is actually very good especially with those very
big ascii GIF style pics like the nudes because it squeezes them down.
It squeezes them a little too much so that they get a slightly squashed
look .

I`ll get the program onto my 'permanent' website ASAP, but until then if you
can catch me online you could try http://martpws.dyn.ml.org/junk/aschalf.zip
(if I remember to do it after I`ve finished reading the news postings.)
Some help with the sizing would be nice, especially +resampling as that was
what I had most trouble with. Resampling to 50% is easy, but odd sizes are a
bit more involved. :o)

When I get it uploaded, it will be

but beware: It`s not a very elegant program and was mainly just for my
perposes so isn`t tarted up for 'public use' <g>
