WHAT I USE WHEN I'M NOT IN NETSCAPE OR IE. a really short essay (c) 1998--all mine!! all the browsers I have access to, etc... What: Lynx. Why: My Internet provider, MSN [pause for uproarious laughter] occasionally [more laughter] goes down, leaving me with my school's dialup shell. (I should get a PPP from them some day.) What: WebTracker Why: I am (occasionally) found in MUDs, and my MUD client is Chaco's "Pueblo". Pueblo has its own little browser, WebTracker, which automatically loads whenever I click a link that happens to appear in the MUD. What: emacs-w3 Why: I recently became addicted to the idea of emacs and even though I can't get it to work without crashing every few minutes, I get this special "I feel tingly" from using it... Kinda the same I get from perusing James Joyce's "Finnegan's Wake." What: Amaya Why: You'd expect W3C to be able to make a decent browser, wouldn't you? Uh.. not exactly. It does work, in some places, and it most definitely does not in others. Ah well. What: AOL Why: don't ask. What: Sam Spade Why: It takes 'plain text' literally. Instead of doing anything silly like parsing html it just shows it. I use it if I think a page might have something malicious on it. [In fact, I just used it this morning, luckily.] I think that's it. >>BKNambo -- Sun...@msn.com World Domination through Trivia! [ chatquiz | onGames | MarsMission ]

I think, that in a parallel thread we were able to establish that all Netscapes and all Internet Explorers interpret the code correctly (about 90% of web surfers) but that only some, and not all Lynx's will interpret the code correctly. Assuming that 5% of websurfers use Lynx, we are currently at around 90% to 95% of websurfers who see the pic rendered correctly. Depending on whether or not the other browsers (aol in particular) render the code correctly, we may or may not be able to push beyond the 95% mark. Thanks in advance ... Thanks a ton. My webpage is designed to handle Netscape and IE and not the others. So now I understand a little more about them...lol...the important stuff anyway. Thanks a lot. Ok we have too good threads on the discussion of HTML and Browser
Support, "Half Space Technique for html art" & "The <PLAINTEXT> HTML
tag: Good for ASCIIArt?" I help many people with HTML and some Java. I
don't even know anyone who does not use a Netscape or IE browser. Those
of you who do not, can you explain to me what you use and why so I can
get a clear understanding of Lynx, Unix, WinWeb....and why you chose to
use them. I realize that I travel only in the United States and maybe
geography has something to do with it.
Thanks, and BTW, I know I'm not the only one who is curious about this.

Thanks, BKN and others! With the previous results, I think we can now say that the html code below (and the Half Space Technique) is rendered correctly by all of the major browsers and some of the minor browsers, in particular: Netscape, MSIE, AOL, WebTracker, and some of the Lynx versions. That makes about 95% of the websurfers, give or take a few percentage points, not bad at all! However, to say things the other way around, (and ignoring professional naysayers for the moment ;-)) about 5% of websurfers will see a slightly distorted picture in the sense that the characters intended to go on half spaces will be rendered on integer spaces. Moreover, this happens without the websurfer being aware that s/he is looking at a slightly distorted picture. A reference point may put things into perspective, since this situation is quite different with the other graphic formats. For example, a gif will also be visible to about 95% of the websurfers, but it is either visible or not (or rendered quite erroneously such as heavily smudged or streaked). In any case, the difference is that the websurfer is aware if something goes wrong. In summary, I would say there is little risk in using the Half Space Technique for html art. The html code provided will be rendered correctly, only one out of twenty websurfers will see a slightly distorted picture. Well folks, that's as far as I wanted go on this topic ... Fine, I'll bite, this time.
Name: Ilmari Karonen
Uses: Lynx (usually), Netscape (if I need graphics),
M$IE (not if I can avoid it)
Why: a) Having a very very low end machine, few graphical browsers
run on it without crashing, hogging resources and generally
being slow and annoying.
b) I can run Lynx over telnet, making it easy to start whenever
I need to get something from the web.
c) It's fast. Not only do I avoid loading images, but if I run
it on the ISP's server I don't have to pull all that tag
soup through my 14.4k modem link.
d) It's limited, yes, but what it does it does very well. I've
yet to see another browser that'd follow the the recommended
parsing rules as nicely.
e) Some of its limitations are actually good things. I rather
like the frame/refresh implementation, for example. (It shows
both as links at the top of the page.)
What I miss: Incremental display, optional justification of table
columns, smarter caching, better HTML authors =)

To half-spacing: Webtracker did it right, (which surprised me!) Netscape, AOL, and IE got it right, and the others didn't get it right. :( (But Lynx and emacs/w3 can't support half-spaces anyway. Yet. I hear emacs' next version will support proportional fonts; we'll have to see whether that lets them half-spaces too.) Thanks for that. I might wonder ask you this...can't you use Netscape
and just shut the graphics off? Or does it not work well for some
reason?
Thanks for all the responses to this. I'm learning some good info.

That affects the first half of point c only. Admittedly it's an important
point, but the others still exist. (I do turn the images off if I don't
need them when using Netscape/IE.)
ObAsciiArt: (looks for something unpublished..) Hmm, a shaded box. Well,
I guess that'll do.

Still curious what it would take to write html code for close to 100% of
websurfers, I visited the list of all available browsers at
http://browserwatch.internet.com/browsers.html
The list contains some 50 browsers for 5 OSs: Amiga, Mac, OS/2, Unix,
Windows, and miscellaneous computing platforms.
That means that you would need to comply with close to 100 browser
_versions_ including finding workarounds for the bugs in the browsers
themselves, if that is possible at all, shudder ...

There is a group that deals with exaclty this type of issues. Some of the people there say that writing for 100% of the audience is possible. Some of them even say that it is easy. Maybe you should go there, read what they have to say, and discuss it with them there. My dear Veronicastein,
Again, I suggest that you question your pretentious judgement calls on
what is on topic and what is not. The html discussion thread that I
initiated (only one of several on this newsgroup) has well over twenty
entries, people won't submit that many entries if they consider it off
topic.
I suggest too, that you are much happier in flammable newsgroups, since
you like to initiate and wallow in your daily flaming exercises, whereas
poor me, I only throw them back to you :-))

The connection to ascii art, my dear, is that we want to post it on the
web with html to an as large audience as possible. That's stated in one
line, your long winded theorems are unnecessary.
And if you really object to just one of my articles, why don't you spend
your energy on the money, sex, and what have you in aaa, there are many
of those flying around, free for the grabs for you to flame and be happy
with.

Is it time for another new subgroup alt.ascii-art.html ? Bye,
Not meaning to drag this on and on...
But I missed some posts and I would like to know what the consensus
was as to which html worked best and was simplest to use for ascii
art? I have started a page about ascii art as signatures for a writers
newsletter. Anyway, I have posted a few sigs from the regulars of this
newsgroup as examples. One or more of my own will go up as well. I
have used the <pre> and </pre> codes and they seem to work.
One problem I have found is that my browser will not let me change to
the fixedsys font. It sticks with courier new no matter what ways I
have tried to trick it. *sigh* I use Netscape and IExplorer anyone
know a better way?
Btw, for those wanting to look the page is not officially done yet
(its for an issue coming out in about 2 weeks) but you can peek at it
at: http://members.xoom.com/ldb/ascii.htm Anyone whose sig I have
used who objects please let me know and I have no problem to remove
them/ replace them. Not that I expect anyone will have a problem with
the extra bit of promotion for their websites.
Take care,
Laura

Well, I suppose you _can_ put it anywhere, but the standard says it should
be in the head, and the browser can do anything if it sees it somewhere
else. (It could apply the style sheet as intended, ignore the contents,
display the contents as HTML, pop up a flashing red sign that says "Invalid
HTML!", throw a cream pie on your face..)

: 'type="text/css"' is so that it will be HTML4.0 allowed (at least, when
: checking my pages, W3 validator yelled at me without it <g>)
A good thing too, it could just as well have been text/dssl or perhaps

On the other proposal of establishing new aa groups, again good luck with that one too! It is not off-topic in this group to discuss the implementation of ASCII art in various media. HTML included. And it doesn't signify that this isn't an "HTML group" because we here have more expertise at using it *in this way*--for example, alt.adjective.noun.verb.verb.verb is more on-topic to writing an aanvvvish novel than some rec.arts.writing, and more on-topic to discussing aanvvv chat (even though this isn't IRC.. it is Usenet and its newsgroups) than alt.mirc, even if an aanvvv chat breaks the rules of aanvvvism for convenience or innovation. (I use that example only because I've seen it before.) [Now, I forget my point. Ack.] >There has been plenty of discussion of the use of HTML in the newsgroup >news.admin.usenet.net-abuse because so many people think it is OK to use >HTML in Usenet newsgroup postings...not just in the Ascii Art group. "Use" of html.. not 'discussion' of HTML. totally different concept. I'm totally against posting in html, even if this newsreader screws up and does it by accident sometimes. <arg.> (oops, I mean [arg.], can't have HTML here can I now? <g> i mean [g]). >>BKNambo -- Sun...@msn.com World Domination through Trivia! I was going to drop out of this discussion with my FAQ suggestion, but I have to disagree with the above. Yes, this is Usenet, not the Web. That doesn't mean this _discussion_ would have to be about Usenet. In fact the subject should pretty much tell you it isn't about Usenet. Although looking at the subject I just realized that this is the one thread that was indeed off-topic, but it has drifted a lot since then. Anyway, what people put on their websites is indeed their business. But if what they put there is ascii art, it also touches this group. I do agree that we don't need these extensive HTML discussions here, it should be enough to tell people to slap <PRE></PRE> on it and go to ciwah for further advice. That's exactly why I suggested the new FAQ entries. -- __,,,------._ ,-/| `-. I don't think 3 characters would be nearly at that point. I redid a teapot and cups. Changing characters that were not ascii and fixing some that didn't work (at least to my eye). The pot and cups do not look like the original design but for a the rims of the cups and pot. But I still don't use that one cause I don't feel it belongs to me completly. I could work on a new teapot and cups and end up with a very similar design and that would feel fully mine. Who is cb?
