I've started using bug as a week-end indicator. :) When he posts, I know the
week-end has begun, and it's time for my weekly post.

Since someone else asked: Basho was a haiku poet. I like how Nerd Boy
accepts the loss of his book immediately in the third panel. He just
swallows his feelings and moves on. Kind of touching, in a way. OK, I'll
stop it with the bullshit now.

I like this one. I came up with it just as I was going to bed, so I
scribbled it down on a piece of paper. Here's the original script:
 - N: Mandy! Riddle me this!
   M: Oh god.
 - N: Have you ever noticed how "O shigoto wa nan
desu ka" resembles "Nani o shimasu ka"?
   M: I don't know Japanese!
 - N: I know, I was just trying to impress you.
M: Well, I'm not impressed, bozo!
 - N: *
 - N: Potted plant! Riddle me this!

Too many panels, so then I merged some stuff:
 - N: Mandy! Riddle me this!
   M: Oh god.
 - N: Have you ever noticed how "O shigoto wa nan
desu ka" resembles "Nani o shimasu ka"?
M: I don't know Japanese! And stop trying to
impress me! I'm not impressed, bozo!
 - N: *
 - N: Potted plant! Riddle me this!

Then when I made the actual strip, I didn't have the script with me, so it
turned out even better, IMHO.

Made this one in ten minutes or so twenty minutes ago. Which means it took
longer to upload the damn thing than it took making it, and that's not
supposed to happen. My stupid stupid webserver kept refusing to write to my

anything, it just wrote a zero length file. Grrrr.

Thanks!!!

"dew" works for me!

One thing, though, what's "O shigoto wa nan desu ka" and "Nani o shimasu ka"?
All i gleaned was that they're both questions, and the first one is something
about a job... (i don't speak a lick of japanese) (well, maybe a lick, but
definately no more than a slurp)

"Oshigoto wa nan desu ka" = "What is your profession?"/"What do you do?"
"Nani o shimasu ka" = "What are you doing?"

I just thought it was interesting that "shigoto" and "shimasu" were so
similar, which is why I only kept those in the final strip.

You would derive ego-enlargement from offering to credit me with your work (or
at least an extension thereof)? 8^)

<snip to my lou my daaarling>

aaaah... it makes sense, too. 'What's your _occupation_?' vs. 'What's
_occupying_ you?' You know, japanese is very similar to korean, "What is your
profession?"="Chigopi muo in ga?"(forgive the romanizations...), but that would
make sense being as the two countries are hardly a rice paddy's distance apart.

You know what? It just struck me that written korean would actually be pretty
simple to make in ASCII... a little background, music please, maestro... In
1443, Emporer Kim Sejong saw a rising problem with illiteracy among his
citizens. This was because the only written form of their language was to use
chinese characters, which, although there are some noticeable patterns here and
there, are fairly random-looking and require extensive education to be able to
read them. So, with the help of a team of scholars, Kim created a phonetic
alphabet - "Hangul". It is said that the average Korean could learn to read
this alphabet in under ten days, and it has fewer letters than the english one!
Would anyone be interested in a series of posts teaching you how to read korean?
Be the first one on your block! Impress your friends and family!

Wow, talk about a tangent! (NO please don't!! not a math lecture too!!!)
Anyway, those comics are great! I'll be putting up a link on ye ole' website for
sure!

I don't know enough Japanese (yet) to know how the "-te" suffix works... But
"imasu"? I've only seen that used for telling someone where a person is. Is
it applicable here? I have no idea...

Yes, but it's also used in a sense that I think is a bit like the
English present continuous (I'm ...ing): -te + imasu. So I think you
would translate "What do you do in the summer?" "I read books" as "Hon o
yomimasu", but "What are you doing right now?" "I'm reading a book" as
"Hon o yonde imasu".

So I would have expected "Nani o shite imasu ka", because it's a
question about what the person is doing right now. But my Japanese
grammar isn't all that great, either.

Cheers,
Philip

I think I've heard people say "Nani o shimasu ka" in anime, although of
course that is actually no indication that the term is correct...

I bet you do ..
But I can offer a partial explanation :

love.is IS a real internet domain .. you can check www.love.is if you want.
.is I believe are the islandic domains.

My guess is that someone registered love.is and setup either all or just
"this.message.is.dedicated.to.all.that.now.what" to point to a newsserver.

Bug is using that server.

> > And besides, it's "know", not

Internet-names with spelling errors seem really dumb to me.
If you took the time to register or set it up in the dnsserver you could at
least check the spelling.

Correct so far.

>My guess is that someone registered love.is and setup either all or just
>"this.message.is.dedicated.to.all.that.now.what" to point to a newsserver.

Actually this isn't necessary. If you own a domain you are free to use
every subdomain of it for msg-ID-generation (or allow others to do so).
This subdomains do not have to point anywhere. e.g. if you try to reach
msgid.usenet-rundfahrt.de you will just get an error-message saying that
this subdomain doesn't exist.

>Bug is using that server.

He is just generating his own Message-IDs. I'm not sure if Outlook is
capable of doing this, but if not there are tools which add this feature.

I've also heard "Nani shitenno?", but that's probably slang. (Short for
"Nani o shite iru no desu ka?" --> "Nani shite iru no?" --> "Nani
shiteru no?" --> "Nani shitenno?", I suppose.)

Don't ask me which way of saying it is most correct ;)
