The Ascii Art Dictionary --> www.ascii-art.de <-- has been
moved to a new server. The layout has a completely new
design and of course the content will be different as
well. `Will be'? Yes, I am not as far as that. The ASCII
collection is online (and updated regularly again). Everything
else is more or less in a `coming soon' state.
OK, so what will be different? First of all there will be
more! In fact, before I was limited by disk space. Now, for
example I want to present the information about ASCII art in a
more elaborate way and provide some clear pages that lead to
available tutorials, FAQs and other homepages. This means,
in general, that I plan to spend more time and effort on the
`info' pages than I did before.
Next I have added a `what is new' section to the site. There you
can always check if I have added something of interest to the
Dictionary.
Please update your bookmarks, visit my pages regularly
and send me tons of feedback! :)
Andreas
P.S. From now on I have to pay a lot of money if a certain
traffic limit to my site is exceeded. Please do not use
robots/programs to copy the entire site to your computer.
Thank you.

If you have control over the server .. or at least a say in the matter , try installing mod_gzip http://www.remotecommunications.com/apache/mod_gzip/ and store the files in gzipped compressed form. Not only will the website load much faster (about 4 times for a normal site but since ascii-art compress really well I would say that the increase in speed would probably be more) but the disk space used will also be much less. .. And you will save A LOT of bandwidth. > Now, for > example I want to present the information about ASCII art in a > more elaborate way and provide some clear pages that lead to > available tutorials, FAQs and other homepages. Great. :) > Please update your bookmarks, visit my pages regularly > and send me tons of feedback! :) I like the design - I feel that the different item in the dictionary should be easier to browse with the eyes .. try using alternating link colors or alternating tablecolours .. this will require a lot of extra htmlcode though, since a new colours will need to be defined every time .. but perhaps something clever could be made with stylesheets. I have an idea already. Tell me if you would like to me to investigate. And I didn't have to update my bookmarks .. it seems to me that my bookmark have pointed to http://www.ascii-art.de for over a year now .. have it really been that long ? > P.S. USE mod_gzip .. it sounds too good to be true .. but it really works. Sincerly CeeJay .. The ASCII-ART Dictionary ROCKS!
From the Ascii Art Dictionary (http://www.ascii-art.de/info/):
"The most traffic and from my point of view the most creativity lives in the
Usenet group alt.ascii-art.de."
Eh? There's an alt.ascii-art.de? :)

And you will save A LOT of bandwidth. Well, it is installed. I always thought that the Apache would just decompress it before sending it. Now I have just read up the correct info. Alas, it doesn't work together with the server-side includes (on that server). I just tried it and it _is_ much faster (factor of 5). That means that I should re-organise everything. :( Oh, nooo! Well, well, maybe later - but thanks a lot for the info! Tell me if you would like to me to investigate. Hm, nice idea! It _will_ blow up the code though. That list is of course created by a script - so the implementation would be no problem. I will try how many extra bytes I would have to live with. And, yes, if you got a smart idea how to do that `slim' (without anything dynamic) then let me know please! There's an alt.ascii-art.de? :) Oops! I have written ascii-art.de so often that I simply cannot stop at "art" now. Stupid me! Thanks a lot for telling me! Hopefully not too many people have seen that yet. Embarrassing! :) Andreas ________________________________________________ http://www.ascii-art.de
Great new look and your moving ascii picture is at least equally
great. Looking forward to exploring the site again. I've also been
using that same URL for a year or so.
