Have a go at reading the ascii art FAQ:

http://studserv.stud.uni-hannover.de/~freise/ascii/faq.html

And a little thing I wrote a while ago about how to show ascii art on
the web:

PLEASE! That is way too "encoded"!

Here's what you need to show that picture in an html page:

<pre>

You don't need any &nbsp; anywhere! Joan's page is a mess of "WYSIWYG
editor" garbage. I think she knows that but doesn't care. That's a pity
because a lot of people see her as the Queen of ascii art and a Great
Master to look at and learn from.

Yes, I know about all the &nbsp garbage.
It's not that I don't care... it's more due to
the fact that I'm uneasy not using a wysiwyg
editor. I'm not computer expert -- I have
little background in computers and programming.
I remember a little BASIC from middle
school on a Wang... I also played around
with our Commodore 64/128 -- but that was
mostly for games. I am technically-challenged.
I can draw the ASCII pics but don't ask me
to do any fancy programming or coding.
My inexperience and lack of knowledge
shows in my source code... No one should
look to that to learn from.

I'm not sure if this is a bug: Not all WYSIWYG editors have this problem
and the others have had enough time to fix it. Possibly it should force
compatibility to older browsers. There are some other ways to preformat
text which might be used instead of the pre-tag:

-======== cut ========-

<HTML>

Standard tag:

<pre>
+----+
|    | pre ( = PREFORMATTED: 80 Character/Line Printing)
|    |
+----+
</pre>

Older tags:

<xmp>
+----+
|    | xml   ( = EXAMPLE: 80 Character/Line Printing)
|    |
+----+
</xmp>

<listing>
+----+
|    | listing ( = Source Code LISTING: 132 Character/Line Printing)
|    |
+----+
</listing>

<plaintext>
+----+
|    | plaintext ( = Without closing tag, following tags aren't interpreted.)
|    |
+----+

All (?) other tags (<tt>...) require characters entities (&nbsp;...)
or unicode (&#160;...) for 'HTML-own characters' and space rows.

-======== cut ========-

The older tags shouldn't be used any longer, but some very old browsers
might need them. A space to &nbsp; conversion wouldn't solve this problem
alone... it is difficult to say how the functions of the above tags was.
If you test the page in some alternative browsers you can see big differences
in the interpretation. It would be interesting if someone has a browser
(DOS ?) which interprets the fixed font and CR correct, but leaves away
the spaces (in the pre-area). This would be the explanation for the space
to &nbsp; conversion...

     Just link to a file that does not have the html tag,
and I _think_ it will be WYSIWYG.

I repeat me ... nevertheless: I have written a very
simple (BASCI :) prog. which replaces the &nbsp's.
You can create the HTML files with your editor and
after finishing run this prog: drag & drop your
HTML file and a the prog. creates a new optimized
one...

Blabla ... The trust is that you are to lazy to
run a program. I think you have enough experience

Perhaps it's the German blood from my heritage!

I've downloaded the program and tried it but
I'm getting an error.. (pre.exe bad command
or file error). I'm probably doing something
wrong. Do I work from Windows Explorer?
I dragged the icon from one folder to the pre.bat file icon.
Dropped it, got the MSDOS box and the
file error. What am I doing wrong?
Perhaps we ought to take this to email...
unless there are other people frequenting
the newsgroup who are interested...

*ALL* you need is to open your ASCII art file and enclose it in:

<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Insert Name of Picture or group of pictures
Here</TITLE><HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR="FFFFFF" TEXT="000000" LINK="0000FF" VLINK="CC0099"
ALINK="00FF00">

ASCII  File Goes Here

</PRE>
Add links here, or comments...or not

</BODY></HTML>

This gives you a white page with black text and the standard color
links, etc. if you want to add any; you can put your text inside a
paragraph tag <P>Text goes here</P>

Links are a little more complicated to explain, but a basic URL would
be <A HREF="url goes here inside the parentheses">Name of URL here</A>

It's NOT like writing a computer program!!!

Joan,
I realize that you are probably pressed for time but you may want to go
to http://www.w3.org . They have everything you ever wanted to know
about HTML but was afraid to ask. They also offer mailing lists where
you can ask questions.

Angelfire.com also use to offer a VERY good tutorial on HTML. I don't
know if they still do or not but it's worth looking into.

I'm uneasy about _using_ a wysiwyg editor, because I know what kind of
garbapge those things usually produce. :(

> I'm not computer expert -- I have

HTML is not programming. HTML is nowhere *near* programming. HTML is
just saying what something is, e.g. "this is a paragraph" is said in
HTML by placing the text inside: <p></p>.

Repeat after me: "HTML is not programming!".

I think the big problem here is that people are used to looking at you
as the expert, so when they need advice on how to do things right - they
look at how the expert does it... :-/

Anyway, here's a little thing I just made for you:

http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/ASCII-to-HTML/

It takes a "pure ascii" picture, and turns it into HTML, which you can
then copy-paste to Notepad.

The thing is that somebody did look at her page to see how things should
be done and then posted his conclusions to a newsgroup which specialises
in html, as advice on how to do things right.
