Krogg, JRO told me to write you about fixing my font on here. I can't see anyone's images properly. I try to go to: tools>options>read>fonts But when I click on fonts, it doesn't work. What is the problem? I am using OE and Windows 98. Thanks, Caitlin

That'll confuse me, maybe also OE. I dunno if this is the problem - It could be. How to set your Outlook Express 5 to view ASCII art correctly:
1. On the TOOLS menu, click OPTIONS
2. Select the READ tab
3. Click the FONTS button near the bottom of the box
4. For the languages UNICODE, WESTERN EUROPEAN and USER DEFINED
set both the PROPORTIONAL font and FIXED-WIDTH font to
LUCIDA CONSOLE, and FONT SIZE to SMALLER
5. Click OK, then OK again.
How to set your Outlook Express 4 to view ASCII art correctly:
1. On the TOOLS menu, click OPTIONS
2. Select the READ tab
3. Click the FONTS button near the bottom of the box
4. For the languages UNIVERSAL ALPHABET, USER DEFINED and WESTERN
set both the PROPORTIONAL font and FIXED-WIDTH font to
LUCIDA CONSOLE, and FONT SIZE to SMALLER
5. Click OK, then OK again.
NOTE : If LUCIDA CONSOLE is not available as a font, pick another
from the list of available FIXED-WIDTH fonts.
EXAMPLES OF FIXED WIDTH FONTS 1. ANDALE MONO
COMMONLY AVAILABLE WITH WINDOWS: 2. COURIER NEW
3. LUCIDA CONSOLE
4. LUCIDA SANS TYPEWRITER
5. OCR A EXTENDED
If you have followed the above steps correctly, you should now
be able to view and create ASCII art as it should be.
Good Luck
PS. Does anyone else feel this should be included in the
official FAQ (or is it ADA now?), or should I keep a
copy of this and post it when needed?
* Have a good day, y'all! *

You might want to try the Outlook Express fonts patch which is on the ASCIIArt Documents Archive, at this address... http://website.lineone.net/~martin.atkins/ada/aaaoepatch.txt If you take the aaaoepatch.txt off of the above address, you can get to the ADA itself, containing a whole host of interesting information. The OE Patch is untested with OE5, but I should think that it will either work or nothing will happen at all, since the options in OE that it changes are pretty straightforward. '-----------------------------------
Hi. Just to clear this up...
The FAQ is the Frequently Asked Questions document written by Matthew Thomas
and posted weekly-ish by me.
The ADA is the ASCIIArt Documents Archive, which contains a variety of
different ASCIIArt-related documents, including the FAQ.
There are a few documents with information on Outlook Express fonts in the
ADA:
aaaoepatch.txt Registry (.REG) file to patch OE into FixedSys (and plain
text)
aaaminifaq.txt Contains the following:
.---- To get a Monospaced/Fixed Width font in MS Outlook Express -->
|Click Tools/ Options.
|Click the Read tab.
|Click the Fonts button.
|Select Courier or another fixed width font for ALL of the listboxes.
|Select Smallest.
|Click OK.
|Click OK.
'------------------ (Thanks to aardvarko) ------------------------->
You can find the ADA at http://voices.vossnet.co.uk/a/atkins/ada/ and it's
mirrors.
If you feel that a new document should be added about Outlook Express, let
me know... but the mirror hosts are a little reluctant to update things too
often so it wouldn't be added until a major update (probably the middle of
the year.)

A friend of mine has OE5 and if I remember I'll nab his registry settings for OE when I'm next at his house and make a new OE registry patch. I know that he has his font set to Courier New (I did it), so I know it's possible, somehow. The easiest way is to not use OE for newsgroups, and get a dedicated newsgroup reader that *only* does newsgroups. I reccommend Free Agent: http://www.forteinc.com/ and you can continue to use OE for your email, as I do. (Albeit OE4).
