Have a go at reading the ascii art FAQ:

http://studserv.stud.uni-hannover.de/~freise/ascii/faq.html

And a little thing I wrote a while ago about how to show ascii art on
the web:

PLEASE! That is way too "encoded"!

Here's what you need to show that picture in an html page:

<pre>
-=[ toucan ]=- 8/97

        .:%@&amp;'@&amp;:.                  .::&amp;@&amp;'&amp;::.
         .::&amp;@.&amp;@:'                  '::&amp;.@&amp;@'
       ':: @.&amp;@:'                  .:@&amp;.@'___
          .::@&amp;::'                  '_.:-'   `',
        ':&amp;.@&amp;@:.               _.-''      _.-'
         .:&amp;@&amp;::.        ____.-'       _.-:.
        .&amp;'@@.&amp;@'      .::.-.\     _.-'@&amp;@:'
         '::@&amp;@::.    /;:/(o)\\_.-'  '&amp;@.&amp;@:.
         .:@'&amp;&amp;::.   |;:;:---' \```'''---.._`
        .: :&amp;&amp;@: .   /;:;'     /`'----------`
         ':&amp;.@&amp;:'   /;;;      |     .::@&amp;@&amp;::'
        .:@&amp;.@&amp;._._/:;;       |     .:&amp;'@@:.
        ':.=####=#.:;:;       |   ': @&amp;.@ :'.
         /#/##/###\;;:;;.     /    .:@.&amp;@::.
        /#/#/##/##/;:;:;:'  .'      .:&amp;@&amp;::'

</pre>

You don't need any &nbsp; anywhere! Joan's page is a mess of "WYSIWYG
editor" garbage. I think she knows that but doesn't care. That's a pity
because a lot of people see her as the Queen of ascii art and a Great
Master to look at and learn from.
