All these threads regarding copyright-- calling for legal action -- making
ASCII art 'text art plus' -- and arguing about hi-low tech and who's website
is better, blah, blah, blah-- are making me feel nauseated.

ASCII art was fun when I first started lurking close to 2 years ago... People
enjoyed making the pictures and enjoyed sharing them. Those who chose
not to, didn't. People on the newsgroup supported one another and built
upon other's ideas.... it wasn't considered "stealing"... It was fun-
amusement--
(Who remember the tornado postings?) :)
No one was that concerned about copyrights-- although we did keep initials
with all the ASCII artwork.

Seriously, does anyone really believe that ASCII art will make big business?
Personally, I've made a little money creating specialized sigs-- but it
certainly
will not support my family! I can't see how ASCII cartoons will make it
anywhere
except in e-zines... (and they don't pay for submissions) So what's the big
deal? Can't we make this fun again without people bitching?

Does anyone see it from this viewpoint as well?

Sure I do.

There's no way to fight the 'big usenet evil'
face to face (spamming, flame wars or whatever you name).

My personal technique against flame wars:

1. Ignore it (ie don't read the thread any more)
Don't get involved but remember the names!
2. Don't stop being nice and happy
3. If it gets to stupid : mail the idiots

A friendly atmospehre is where flame wars die.

And BTW: Whenever someone tells you don't do this
or that. I think it's very reasonable to do exactely
_this_ and _that_.

These threads come around here periodically...you are simply just
witnessing the latest outbreak.

Exactly. And that's how I still view alt.ascii-art after some 4
years of its existence. Of my 65 newsgroups aa-a is the one that
gives me greatest enjoyment...I skip the nasties where possible.

I think this posting of yours indicates that you are showing signs
of burn-out following a prolific output as an ascii-artist who has
earned many accolades and undoubtedly would be ranked as the most
prolific of all ascii-artists until now.

Other people have burnt out, e.g. Rowan Crawford ( Row ); Suzy Oviatt;
Normand Veilleux; Bob Allison to name a few. All were acclaimed as
outstanding contributors. Bob Allison even got his own newsgroup
created "alt.fan.scarecrow" such was the adulation of Scarecrow at
the time of creation of the moderated newsgroup "rec.arts.ascii".
Bob Allison could do no wrong and walked on water.

I remember the tornado. I did a little diddle to the picture at one stage.

But...I also remember the Pete Casso bashing which I did not enjoy :-(
nor did I participate therein or comment until someone called
for an end to the bashing...and then...I posted this to celebrate
the end to hostilities...

Ignore the bitching, skip those posts, and get on with enjoying aa-a

I do...partly anyway. You are suffering the fate of all people who
attain fame in something they choose to do for fun !

Will you burn out ? I dunno. Time will tell.

And people call ME extreme! When do you eat/sleep/etc ? :D:D:D

I have heard people call alt.ascii-art an oasis in the newsgroup
desert....

Time for a little break maybe? Some time away from the computer... (I
know I need that, computers may be fun and used for fun but you can get
tired of them just as you can get tired of working too much....)

Is there any ascii-god who hasn't met that fate? (you make it sound like
it is totally unavoidable...)

So did I :)

It was funnier than his cartoons! (which doesn't say much)

You forgot to say that the latest outbreak was caused by Veronicastein and
Spunkystein reacting negatively to the "Text Art Plus" announcement. I
made the announcement for people to enjoy, but Veronicastein and
Spunkystein then began throwing things at me.

THAT poisons the atmosphere.

It would be better if Veronicastein and Spunkystein behave better and
refrain from taking such unsavory alternatives.

In plain English, if Veronicastein and Spunkystein refrain from throwing
things at me, I will not throw things back at them (there would be nothing
to throw back.) But vice versa, if Veronicastein and Spunkystein begin
throwing those poisonous things at me, I may throw things back at them.

That should be unambiguous, I play with open cards, as I have always done.

quoted from Spunkystein:
> ASCII art was fun when I first started lurking close to 2 years

I just want to point out that it was Spunkystein herself who coined the
term "stealing" in conjunction with people changing initials on her
artwork. (She is perhaps justified in coining that term.)

I just want to prevent a possible insinuation here (the quote came from a
response from Spunkystein as I opened this thread), that I might have
coined the term "stealing" in the context of ascii art, I did NOT. On the
contrary, I have always encourage people to try their hands on Frogstein
and Birdstein creations.

Or to say things from a different perspective, it was Spunkystein who was
bitching about "stealing" all along (perhaps justified), but I did NOT.

quoted from Colin:
>But...I also remember the Pete Casso bashing which I did not enjoy :-(

>the end to hostilities...

You played an ambiguous role in the past ascii war. You indeed posted the
peaceseeking Steinlager cartoon, but before that, you also posted the
belligerent Flamethrower cartoon.

To say it once again, if people (Veronicastein and Spunkystein in
particular) don't start bitching at me, I do my own stuff and there are
enough people who enjoy my stuff.

But if people (Veronicastein and Spunkystein in particular) do start
bitching at me, I may throw things back at them, with or without a cartoon
  :-)

Huh? is there another 'spunk' in this newsgroup??
When did I do this??????

I added initials back onto some of the pics-- just as I've done
for others (Shanaka's, Row's, etc.) What's the big deal?

Read the words- not between the words. I made no insinuations.
.... and please quit adding "stein" onto the references to me. If you
must refer to me, you can use my real name or my email name.
I never adjusted your name in the past except for using your initials...
You may do the same.

Stop making accusations. Continually doing so makes one lose integrity.
I don't throw things at people. Reading egotistical things makes my
stomach crawl. Can you explain this Text Art Plus-
what makes it better than ASCII art?

There are more than 30,000+ newsgroups so a list of 65 is miniscule.

It is said that one can only do full justice to 12 groups per day.

Therefore you could read 84 newsgroups effectively once per week
( only selecting the articles you really wanted to read of course ).

To read all the 30,000 systematically it would take some 2,500 days
or 6 years and 310 days.

I think one person actually does do something like that and he comes
around again every couple of years. :-)

Bye,

Bye,

Okay, I've gotta clear something up that I think you might be refering
to (I'm not sure what "response" you're talking about, so if this makes
absolutely no sense, browse on!)

I believe I was the one who used the word "stealing" (which is what I
consider it) in recapping the going's-on because someone asked what the
thread was about. I was paraphrasing, and was talking about what Joan
had said...which was really, paraphrased: "Yes, that was a nice sig
wasn't it? I believe it was made by so-in-so." That was a mistake on
my part - as stealing does have a different connotation than what she
really said, and I apologize for that.

I don't remember Joan saying stealing (of course I have the memory of a
cheap 8086) except to say, "*I* didn't say 'stealing'."

"political correctness"?????

You must have missed the recent "2MUCH" thread! :D:D:D:D

That would be nice, but I thought I should reply to this before PC says
that gif images can be sent as attachments by mail... Sending somebody a
gif or jpeg (or other format) image or other big file in email without
first asking for permission is generally considered very rude and is not
to be recommended.
