a sweet deal to me .. I would have taken the offer.

Actually Plan B of Microsoft is to either develop the technology itself or
to buy it from your competitor... and then integrate it into the operating
system...

All those little companies making cool utilities for Microsoft operating
systems over the years have seen subsequent releases of DOS or Windows
incorporate versions of their utilities thus destroying their markets...

Do you remember who made the first Expanded Memory Manager for DOS...? How
about Defrag?

Quarterdeck - QEMM

So when Microsoft comes calling, you take the money... and be grateful...

otherwise, if money is not your concern, you can instead make free open
source software for Linux..

It is the "wisdom" Netscape was intelligent enough to avoid.

> If Netscape had "sold out", then Netscape would be what I use to browse the
> Internet today instead of Internet Explorer...

Nope. You would have been forced to IE even faster. The "deal" that MS
tried to flog on NS was that NS should get out of Windows and MS would
leave them the rest of all OSes. Official statement of NS managment in
front of court.

Of course MS would have then taken the Windows majority and made their
web incompatible with NSes and then killed them on all other platforms.

Thanks to NS not entering the deal, they still have an small Windows
presence with those users who do not want IE, and have only lost part
of the Mac market for it. And that despite bungling up the entire NS4.5
series and not putting out NS5 to bridge the time while making NS6. Not
to mention bringing NS6 too early.

> sometimes "principles" aren't worth a damn to anyone...

And sometimes principles, and the self respect coming from holding
them, are worth more than money.

> Do you even remember the boy genius that is associated with Netscape...?

Marc Andreesen.

> Actually Plan B of Microsoft is to either develop the technology itself or
> to buy it from your competitor...

Usually buy. IE1 or IE2 was bought in from Spry, was called Spyglass there.

> and then integrate it into the operating
> system...

And more important: license Windows with the condition that no rival
product may be bundled together with it, so that users always first
try the MS version and only switch if they think they will find better

Why do you think no PC manufacturer offers preinstalled dual-boot
Windows + Linux? Its forbidden in the Windows OEM license.

AKA DOS 5.0 and DOS 6.x

Qemm was the EMM, And Norton Speedisk did what defrag does.

Which is a lot more sensible.

actually Microsoft supports open standards better than many others... such
as Netscape and Sun... :-)

The browser does not define HTML standards... in fact Netscape's
non-standard extensions were/are divisive when it comes to designing web
sites...

well the browser tug-of-war has been won by Microsoft... but you are
right... sufficient Netscape browsers are used to cause web site designers
compatibility headaches... I'm all for competition with the proviso that
standards are adhered to... Netscape still does not support CSS like IE

Folded? Funny, they are still selling their server software (selling
that was allways their business model, the browsers were just to set
up the market for servers).

Faded away, only in the consumer/client market. In servers they are
still strong.

Perhaps today with IE5 and IE6, I remember IE3 and IE4 as being pigs
in that respect.

So were MSes extensions in IE3 and IE4. Today they (particularly those
implemented in NS4.5) are simply regarded as part of the standard by
far too many website designers.

.. if they want to use either the MS extensions or newer features
like CSS. I have no such trouble with my simple site.

NS6 and NS6.1, and of course Mozilla (the open source NS), do support
CSS. I suspect 6.1 to kill off NS4.5/4.6/4.7 some time. Which would be
good, as those were the worst NSes.

Since when ? This statement is soo seriouly wrong you will have to prove it!
Microsoft usually does'nt give a shit about current standards and tried to enforce their
own on people.

Remember when they declared Ascii-art dead since they "innovated" the great new technology
called HTMLmail (which enabled you to recieve more virus's and bloat faster than ever
before.. mnn real "progress" )

Are we still creating ascii-art ? .. Damn right we are !

The earlier version were .. and the earlier Ie's were even more so .. most of the DOM in
IE is nonstandard and only works in Microsoft browsers .. (besides it's buggy as hell ..
I've had sooo many headache's with it)

> Netscape still does not support CSS like IE
> does...

You are right .. It's support is MUCH better!
Try a recent Netscape (6.1) or Mozilla .. you will see that it's CSS1 and CSS2 support is
near perfect (you will probably need to browse www.w3.org pages to see this as the w3
consortium is some of the few that uses this)

The courts have already ruled that .. strangely nothing seems to have been done about
forcing MS to actually obey the rulings .. they still push software on people .. the next
big target for takeover is the Instant messenger .. ICQ is the main competitor.
The MSN Messenger is closely integrated in the WinXP OS and you cannot uninstall it in any
normal way ..
You can however hack the install files to make it possible .. but how many normal users
would/could do this ?

It's 15 here .. Denmark .. and I think it's the same for Sweden were at least Joaquim

Add that and the fact that none of the teenagers even seems to care about that .. I know
several 14 year olds that have had more than I have.

Sure... but I guess my point was that Netscape was big... it was truly
huge... it was _the_ way to browse the Net... now Microsoft occupies that
position...

Netscape the company is gone, swallowed up by Sun (was it?)... and maybe
they still sell web servers, but they are no longer leaders in anything...
Apache is the lead web server with over 60% of the market...

It would make me feel like an idiot that I didn't take Microsoft's money
when it was on the table, because the end result is the same - Netscape is
no longer the browser with over 80% market share...

well IE3 certainly was playing catchup to Netscape still... back in 1996...

let's face it, HTML, was going through a major evolution to cope with the
demands suddenly being placed on it by ecommerce... and things were out of
synch...

Netscape got behind because they lost the browser war... it's kind of sad...

nope. Microsoft even adheres to standards in their Active Directory
(LDAP)...

MS has gone out of it's way to adhere to Internet standards... even it's C#
has been submitted to ANSI, whereas SUN refuses to submit JAVA because it
wishes to retain complete control...

I'm not bothered to go do the searching and researching for articles to
prove this... this I get from my readings over the years...

if you want to know more, you can do the looking up...

I don't have a problem with Microsoft competing by adding features to their
OS... I do have a problem with MS dictating terms to their distribution
channel as to what they may bundle or not bundle...

I certainly had a problem with MS charging companies double for their OS
when companies re-imaged hard disks...

IIRC, part (including server?) Sun, part (including the browser) AOL.

A 60% to which I have been contributing since about 5 years :-).

I suppost ethat shows the difference between todays youngsters and and
farts like myself. We did not yet worship money.

Other way round. They lost because they let themselves get in the
behind. Complete missmanagment.

Sort of. Never mention MS LDAP near my office colleague, at least not
if you value your safety.

Erm. HTML mail was one of NSes crimes. MS just managed to make an more
awfull bloated HTML generator, and add virus execution, and spread it
further. That made people forget NSes one.

How many Sircams do you want to get today?

> > Are we still creating ascii-art ? .. Damn right we are !

Sure. Particularly if you like me have an non-HTML mailer and newsreader.

The court has so far ruled:

1 MS has hindered competition (the so called Findings of Fact ruling)
2 They did this in a way that violated the Sherman Act, i.e. using an
  monopoly to gain further monopolies
3 Ruled that MS should be cut up

MS then appealed the rulings.

1 and 2 have been upheld unconditionally (= final unless appealed to
the Supreme Court), while 3 has been sent back to the courts to
re-evaluate, because the judge _may_ have been party. So MS is at
present only 2/3 convicted.

Action against MS will only start when a ruling on 3 is finalised.

Anyone who thinks the MS version sucks? Just wait until the first MSN
Messenger virus, or even worm, apprears.

Jup. That is the real crime. (Miss-)Using an monopoly to hinder
competitors and take over other markets. And for doing that they have
been declared guilty. Now it is just up to getting tough on them.

Look at Samir Bhatia... He took the money for Hotmail, when he sold it to
Microsoft. He made his COOL BUCK$ and then he tried a NEW VENTURE AIMED
specifically towards MICRO$OFT TO BUY... HE FELL FLAT, had to shut it down
But, he made his money initially, the next venture was funded by a few so
HIS PERSONAL losses were minimal...

Great Plains (An Accounting software) was bought over by M$... Visio...
the list goes on... All said and done... Annie is 14...maybe she will
live to a 90+ to regret this mistake ;)

Nah.

Drinking enought wine will help in all problems.
Even when it comes to the optional real-life.
A few drops wine will be enought for a 14-year-old cutie to make
many men very happy.

Don't want to hurt your feelings annie.
Nice work keep going. You're the best.

You oughta drink with Hungarians, though! The other night I was
with some friends celebrating the birthday of my buddy Jack and we were
playin' a drinking game called Trap, (shoulda been called "Entrapment"). I
decided 1/4 of the way in that there was going to be a new rule: whenever
we play that game, for each time that another player takes a swig I have
to match it. Well, Eric was passed out after an hour (weenie), Emma was
still in but was definitely beyond drunk (and she calls herself Old
School?), Jack was in but losing steam and then there was me an' Cecelia,
(who could not drink because she was pregnant so I drank hers, too). Heh,
heh... I was still walkin' straight baby. ("Egesegedre!") Jack later
told Emma that he was "never drinkin' again with Tali cuz she's one o'
them g*ddamned crazy Hungarians". [LOL] I need to learn better
Hungarian, though... that's what's funny!

Or involved in the Hungarian community... as I am. [*smile, wink,
peace sign*] It's not really so much that I think that I need it -- it's
about honouring my grandfather, my ancestors, those around me, and Magyar
itself. If there were another country that I'd want to belong to besides
Canada it would be Hungary.

Oh, you'd better believe it... especially since it is tradition
for the ladies to grow their hair out long -- it needs to be braided for

Yep. It refers to the nation, the people, and anything
"Hungarian".

:Yep. It refers to the nation, the people, and anything
:"Hungarian".

then your sentence:

"it's about honouring my grandfather, my ancestors, those around me, and
Magyar itself."

should be amended to read:

"it's about honouring my grandfather, my ancestors, those around me, and
Magyar herself."

because in English we refer to ships and countries in the feminine and not
the neuter...

also would you please not post using Quoted-Printable as it messes up OE's
quoting... rather use no encoding... if that is possible in PINE...

Except that I was raised in the 80's and by a politically
correct liberal feminist. I was taught to not refer to humankind as
mankind... so therefore, I'm not gonna give a country a sex either. ;)

I'm unsure what you mean by Quoted-Printable. (I happen to have,
by chance, temporariliy switched to Netscape but will be going back to
pine later.)

screw that attitude... in any case the standard for posting to Usenet is
plain text... I thought that would be abundantly clear in _this_ group!

i don't appreciate a snotty attitude towards which version of newsreader a
person chooses to use... especially if it represents a standard in its own
right...

Yep. Magyar (Hungarian) + orszg (country) = Magyarorszg (Hungary).
Similarly, Nemetorszg (Germany), Grgorszg (Greece), etc.

Not always. And not everyone does that.

It was probably more frequent fifty years ago or so.

Whatever your personal habits may be, I speak English and hence I like to
see it used correctly... I don't mind slang or hip cool speech, but I
strongly resist "politically correct" changes to its usage...

It may not be important to you, but it is to me... and that is enough...

well there are users not as advanced as you who do not know what the
difference between quoted printable and plain text is...

that's why i added the "IMHO" (in my humble opinion) because it's
everybody's own choice wich newsreader he/she uses...
it's just that i ONCE tried OE for news (right in the beginning) and
switched right to netscape after noticing that it's a really bad
program. now i'm happy with fort agent.

in all the years i spent in several newsgroups i never had a
newsreader i disliked more than OE ..sorry but that's my opinion if
you don't agree ignore it.

perhaps quoted printable is the default setting for PINE, I do not know...
Agent has that as a default for emailing... and for some reason OE does not
properly quote a reply to such an encoded message...

Agent does though...

I am switching to Agent myself... ver 1.8... I notice you are using 1.6...
why?

Oh, don't get me wrong -- correct English is important to me:
literary arts & linguistics have always been great loves of mine besides
music, dance, theatre, and the visual arts... but that doesn't mean that I
should be opposed to politically correct changes. There are good reasons
for why we have them. The P.C. phenomenon is intended to improve public
morale. I can't say that I disapprove of endeavours to make my country's
society more commonly fair and factually accurate in conversation.

But how? You could quote something from a book, but these days I
could write a book and say pretty much anything in it whether it was true
or not. I could write a book and include the type of hip lingo that is
now typically used in movies, magazines, on television, and on the radio
-- and I could present it as "current" because the media has such an
effect on society. You could select specific texts that an English prof.
once used at a college local to you and declare *that* proper English, but
unless it is currently being taught as the socially acceptable term, it
is not current. That is what I was taught in highschool a year and a half
ago by my English teacher, (who was, incidentally, at the time a student
at our local university, enrolled in Women's Studies where it was
impressed upon her the importance of following P.C. requirements in this
modern age).

But that is just my understanding of how it is. (:> Hm! Guess
that that is my contributed research! [**wink-wink**] What is acceptable
may be different where you are. That is entirely possible.

classing nouns as feminine, masculine and neuter are mere conventions... it
is not up to the current generation to discard on a whim what has worked for
centuries especially as the changes do not add anything to comprehension, in
fact the opposite...

a country should never be referred to as an "it"... it is most definitely a
"she"... just as Russia refers to Mother Russia (Rodina) and German refers
to Deutschland as the Father Land...

so why must English suddenly become politically correct because you, your
mother and a couple of thousand other feminists suddenly consider these
conventions degrading to women???

it is an over reaction... and it strips meaning from English...

In fact what is acceptable today may no longer be acceptable tomorrow, That is
the nature of the English and American languages. I don't know how much other
languages drift over time, but the English and American languages are fluid,
words change meaning, gain new meanings, and drop out of common use frequently.

Sup, to dine
'sup, contracted "whats up" contracted from "hey fellows what are you doing"
adopted I belive from Que Pasa (paso) "whats is happening/ has happened"

New words and new definitions for words all become valid provided enough
people use them over a long enough period of time.

With the "P.C." social movement gaining support terms like Fatso or Skinny
are not just denigrations but outright vulgarisms. (BTW if you know what
a word means, is it a word? ie "fatso" isn't in my dictionary, so is it a
valid word?)

Anyway back to my point, Correct language use is malable and oft' insufferable ;)

new words are always being added to a language which is in current use...
but rarely are entire grammatical conventions abandoned as TAL is suggesting
by her refusal to correctly refer to a country or ship in the feminine...

The OED publishes these words... the entire OED is massive... what you have
is a small subset...

Disclamer: I don't mean anyone to feel addressed by the following unless
applicable.

I do not care too much for the discussion about what's proper English and what
is not. Personally i think it would be wise to consider that many people who
frequent these NG's do not have English as their native tongue, some (or many?)
never even got it taught in school so to require proper English from people
would be unrealisic to say the least. Most people that post in the NGs try their
best and so do i. Forget the type-o's, everybody makes mistakes and it's very
easy to make a mistake on a keyboerd where all the letters are so close
together.

About English as a language: i like the old English a lot. I find it hard to
understand at times because of all the words and terms that no-one uses anymore
but still i love to read something like "Thou Sir, art a naif" (sp?)

I love the language as it is now too, i always did. I started speaking English
when i was about four years old. During the holidays i used to sing "Shing el
bels. Shing el bels. Shing el oll uhway", i could count ("wahn, too, shree") and
i could say my name in English ("Mai name is Peetre") and of course i could say
"yes" and "no".

Just a little contribution to the discussion about proper English. :-)

well then it is good that I am around to point out what is poor English
usage... so that all the foreigners do not pick up bad PC habits... ;-)

this type of discussion prolly belongs in news:alt.english.usage but ppl end
up discussing whatever they want wherever anyway... :-)

We'll just have to disagree on the point of whether or not it is
up to the current generation (who I understand to mean "those alive
today" and not those who are in their early 20's or teens). Those who
inherit the Earth can do what they want with language, as I see it. If we
never broke tradition we'd grow stagnant.

> a country should never be referred to as an "it"... it is most definitely a
> "she"...

How do you figure that it most definitely is a "she"? Heck, I'm
Pagan and believe in the planet being a She due to Her life-giving, but a
country? A car? A computer? I don't see the point in giving those
things sexes. *That* makes it confusing!

> so why must English suddenly become politically correct because you, your
> mother and a couple of thousand other feminists suddenly consider these
> conventions degrading to women???

Because it isn't all that hard to make it more fair and why keep
social degradation on hand when it is unnecessary? I'll kneel to what's
fair before tradition any day. But that is me.

> it is an over reaction... and it strips meaning from English...

I don't see how it does so.

As far as i see, it is slang -- which is an entirely different
sub-section of the main language for any given country. "Fatso" can be
either a proper noun or a common noun, (if you strip it of it's
capitalisation, ie. "fatso").
