I think the point VK was making is whether
or not one should 'initial' or take credit for
a converted pic-- one that is created via
special software...
It's a valid question. If you don't create the
gif... you don't create the special software
or program... and there is no diddling or artistic
tweaking afterwards, is it really deserving
of your initials for credit? Can you (or should
you) take credit for the ASCII "art"?
This particular situation is different as the
person who posted the ASCII pic also
created the gif that it was converted from.
However, it is a thought-- perhaps we can
generate discussion about this... (hopefully
without being argumentative...)

Depending on the picture, I more often than not get crap from these programs. I do, however, like trying to improve this crap. Before: http://www.fiction.org/www/stuff/luna1 After: http://www.fiction.org/www/stuff/luna.txt I don't have any other before/after examples handy, but of course the program created http://www.fiction.org/www/stuff/pikachu.txt as filled in, which I removed, except for the parts that should have been shaded. What takes a fair bit of time, though, is adding the lines that the programs seems to have no hope of converting well. (that I've seen) I guess this counts as diddling/tweaking as you mention, but you wanted discussion, so... :) -- Tim Park -- mailto:ad5...@freenet.carleton.ca -- http://www.fiction.org/www/ Member of the #ShAS#: Shampoo Appreciation Society - Soap gets in our eyes.
Perhaps I'm not the right person to respond -- because I hardly ever sign the ASCII pictures I make myself -- but I agree Veronica's question deserves a more sensible response than my initial reply. spu...@aol.comASCIIart (Spunk1111) wrote: >>Message-id: <T+m...@shieldwolf.demon.co.uk> > >I think the point VK was making is whether >or not one should 'initial' or take credit for >a converted pic-- one that is created via >special software... Yes. She isn't against posting conversions per se. I twisted her words. >It's a valid question. If you don't create the >gif... you don't create the special software >or program... and there is no diddling or artistic >tweaking afterwards, is it really deserving >of your initials for credit? Can you (or should >you) take credit for the ASCII "art"? But it _always_ takes a lot of preparation of the original bitmap -- *and* tidying up afterwards -- to create something recognizable (let alone "artistic") by way of conversion. If you pick just a picture from just a Webpage and run it through a converter you'll probably end up with a huge text file chanting the alphabet in random order... So -- at least in my experience -- an conversion takes a lot more than writing "gif2ascii picture.gif" on the command line. First one has to prepare the bitmap -- by resizing it, getting rid of the colour, cutting down on shades of grey, etc. -- *without* losing the image... And second -- because converters just care for shades of grey, not for things *we* like about an ASCII pic like "smooth edges" -- one has to clean up the mess the prog made, in order to regain the image. To me it seems, in the process of conversion there are *2* stages of (re?)"creation". But I'm not sure whether "considerable effort" is enough reason to take credit for an image. What about originality? I hope this makes sense to anyone... ,mic >This particular situation is different as the >person who posted the ASCII pic also >created the gif that it was converted from. > >However, it is a thought-- perhaps we can >generate discussion about this... (hopefully > >without being argumentative...) It's this very problem that makes me usually stay away from copying other people's drawings and/or photographs. Call me a stickler but there it is. Whether or not you have spent hours and hours deleting things so that the picture will look like something other than a bunch of hash marks, if you have managed to get the image to look like the original, you really should give credit back to the original creator of the image. When my art professor discussed this situation with us with regard to selling images, he told us that the original creator of the image holds the copyright. (He told us that even if you managed to change the image a substantial amount but it was still clear that you took the pose from someone else's photo, there could be legal ramifications) If you were going to sell the ASCII rendition, you would have to get hold of the original creator to get permission to use the image. However, here in this place where we receive no monetary payment, it's probably enough to mention the original person (even if that person is unknown) much the same way we do when we have a combined effort on a drawing.
