If you pick just a picture from just a Webpage and run it through a converter you'll probably end up with a huge text file chanting the alphabet in random order... So -- at least in my experience -- an conversion takes a lot more than writing "gif2ascii picture.gif" on the command line. First one has to prepare the bitmap -- by resizing it, getting rid of the colour, cutting down on shades of grey, etc. -- *without* losing the image... And second -- because converters just care for shades of grey, not for things *we* like about an ASCII pic like "smooth edges" -- one has to clean up the mess the prog made, in order to regain the image. To me it seems, in the process of conversion there are *2* stages of (re?)"creation". But I'm not sure whether "considerable effort" is enough reason to take credit for an image. What about originality?
