tapdance - new Javascript ASCII-animation

Yes, I'm still stuck in the Javascript mode and yes, I'm still using the
outmoded and ancient Netscape 3, so the animation is in black and white.

If you have Netscape 3, MSIE 4, Opera 3.2b2 (or higher) with the
Javascript enabled, the animation can be viewed at
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/9334/tapdance.htm
NOTE: I do not pick up my mail from the idirect address. If you

its absense is to stop the torment of automatic mailers.

I didn't know you had changed the code (haven't read the last part of the thread "Advanced Ascii Animation - NEW [1/1]") :(( First the good news: Your modified script _does_ work in MSIE4 on Windows95 (that's the platform I used to watch your tapdance). The bad news is it's no good in MSIE4 on a Mac! Boxes instead of line breaks. Felt pretty bad about handing over false information. So with the device "Thou shalt not extrapolate!" in mind, I ran the 4 possible scripts -- using \n, \r, \n\r and \r\n (not /r/n!!) -- on the 3 OS'es that I have at my disposal, and drew a conclusion, just based on "trial & error". =) Here are the results: \n \r \n\r \r\n msie4.0 (windows) + + - 3) + ns4.04 (windows) + + - 3) + msie4.01 (mac) - 1) + - 2) + ns4.5 (mac) + + - 3) + ns4.05 (linux) + + - 3) + sidenotes 1) no line breaks 2) boxes 3) extra blank lines It's either \r or \r\n I guess. Matthew -- using ns4.5 (mac) -- noticed extra blank lines. I didn't. ...?? No offence, llizard, but did you by accident put in \n\r instead of \r\n? Martin suspected the problems had something to do with the different ways dos/windows, un*x/linux and mac treat the end of a line. I will change everything to \r instead of \n. That's drastic! Are you sure? With \n you've probably got over 90% of the "audience" covered. And, although \r was OK in netscape/linux, I have no idea whether it works on un*x systems as well. Another result to add to the list: \n \r \n\r \r\n ns3.01gold (windows) + + - 3) + >And no, >I'm pretty sure that I didn't put \n\r instead of \r\n. (no offense >taken) Matthew wasn't the only person who was getting double spacing. I >guess it must have been the Mac that caused the addition of the \r. That would be odd. In any case it's probably not a wrapping problem as Matthew suggests, because the default in a <TEXTAREA> tag is NOWRAP. >I knew the problem occurred in some machine I didn't have.... > >I suppose I could do two pages for each one (grrrr) or is there some way >that I can put into the script something like "ifWin95 choose \n; if Mac >choose \r" ? Of course. But right now the script is plain and simple. I'm afraid adding browser detection etc. will slow the script down endlessly. Those Javascript interpreters aren't the fastest things on your machine, you know. And we're not the world's shrewdest programmers. =) >NOTE: I do not pick up my mail from the idirect address. That definitely wasn't the Herculean undertaking I imagined it would be. The tapdance script with Mac detection can be found at: <http://www.dataweb.net/~mic/anims/tap.htm> Only problem is it's not tested on a Mac yet (my Mac's about 10 miles from home), so there may be some finetuning required. Modifications are tiny, but I'll put up a little info page tomorrow, to explain how they work. <http://www.dataweb.net/~mic/anims/tap.nfo> // nothing there yet! hth, =) mic

It works in Win95 Netscape3 and on a UNIX platform in NS3 and NS4. I'm presuming that it works on a Mac and in Win98. (hope so) http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/9334/animframe.htm It is indeed quite empty now. But on occasion it's extremely time consuming to download the headers because of the inordinate number of off-topic garbage posts. _______ /______/`-_ _-' `-_ /| { } | | _________ | | | | XII | | | | | | | | | |IX ,* III| | | | | ,' | | | | | |'___VI___| | | | | / | | | | | / | | | ejm | | / | | | -|- | /` |/ -|- | /` |/ | |( ) | | | | | \, |\ | | \, |\ | |_________| | | ` '|_____________|/ ---%^^\^,_/ / ' `> > /|^^ | \ NOTE: I do not pick up my mail from the idirect address. To my knowledge the Mac detecting scriptlet works fine. >I have changed all the line endings to \r in all >of my Javascript animations. Rash? Maybe. Woaw! Next time you do that please have a closer look at the Javascript first. One of the few adjustments in <http://www.dataweb.net/~mic/anims/tap.htm> is the replacement of '\n' for an 'a' at the ends of lines (surely I'm not the first who did that?). Put var (which means 'variable') a (or ejm for that matter) = '\n'; in at the beginning of the script and all a's (or ejm's) start acting like \n's. That way you'd just have to change a few chars instead of hundreds, in case of a bug report. >It works in Win95 Netscape3 >and on a UNIX platform in NS3 and NS4. I'm presuming that it works on a >Mac and in Win98. (hope so) It should! Can't test it, really. This is the problem with doing things in haste.) I tried to add the variable but didn't get everything in so got error messages. It actually didn't take really a long time to change those things to \r because of my handy editpad. However, now that I understand the a variable thing, I will eventually make that change too... however, I'm really not supposed to be playing with this stuff at all right now. And I think the addition of the tap wave file is brilliant. May I use that too? Normally I hate sound additions but this is too good to pass up. > >It works in Win95 Netscape3 > >and on a UNIX platform in NS3 and NS4. I'm presuming that it works on a > >Mac and in Win98. You couldn't know, but that's about the exact opposite of what my vacation looked like. I went to the Ruhrgebiet in Germany and visited some of those old industrial sites they've turned into museums, parks etc. <completely ot now ---> The Gasometer in Oberhausen f.i. ... a huge, empty, steel cylinder (100m high) filled by Christo (the artist who usually wraps everything up) with a massive wall of oil drums. -=-=*Awesome! bye, mic
