I As you can tell from the date on that I wrote and drew that one
almost two weeks ago. But things had been so hush hush in here lately
I had no reason to do a post with OA, although the Mario one by
mr_twig almost caused me to post. It was funny. Sometimes he does
some greate stuff. Sometimes I shake my head and wonder.

Which is what I though people would do when they read this MOT. I
know that in some parts of the world (like talk.origins) ID is the
total focus of every waking moment. But in some parts (like this
group with a largely internation readership who have no idea and no
need to concern themselves with) what ID is I couldn't see it as being
a joke that most people would have gotten or even found funny.

Anyway as I was saying, I wrote this two weeks ago. I didn't even
read it before I posted it. So after your OA I reread it and it
actually got me to chuckle. Which isn't easy since I am usually very
critical of things I did in the past.

Last year I was a fool. Yesturday I was a fool. Tommarrow
I will have been a fool today. -- can't remember

Anyway I have 11 more finished MOTs So other than the larger formate
Sunday editions I won't have to worry about comming up with any OA for
a while. And that isn't even counting arts that didn't make the cut
for a finishe product that I can use for OA.

I don't know how long I will do these, but I do know that one day I
will have to finish the butterflies.

I haven't heard of an ID author of the name "Dawkins". Perhaps you
mean "Dembski", who is definitely an ID proponent.

Guffaws indeed. You are correct. I have edited it to be correct so
that when I update my site it will be Dembski. I guess I need to
proof read things once an a while.

How about a device that neutralizes sound by sending inverse sound
waves, or do we have 1 of those already?

Yes. Active Noise Cancellation isn't a new concept. Mainly used in
machine shops, but some car manufacturers, are, I believe, using
workable versions too.

You can buy headphones that do that... I think BOSE makes them. They
look a bit like this:

...and here I am using them with my imaginary iPod:

It does work sufficiently well that it's got some acceptance.
BUT, it works best with predictable noises, from fixed locations, and
most importantly, for defined areas of reception. If you think of the
complexity of wave interference patterns from the proverbial "stone in a
pond", once the waves start to echo off the walls etc, this should not
surprise you; now add in that sound waves have different wavelengths
(pitch), and that the attenuation of sound in air is somewhat wavelength
dependant - more complex still; now look back to the interference
pattern from the stone in your pond - see the fact that the anti-nodes
(quiet places) are adjacent to nodes (places of *increased* noise).
So, for arbitrary noise levels, you can use "anti-noise" to
generate some areas that are quiet for some frequencies, but at the cost
of other, nearby, areas having increased noise at the same frequencies.
Not a perfect solution, but useful for some circumstances.

So there is room for a MOT here! I want a ring of NCU (Noise
Cancellation Units) around a perimeter and then within that ring -
blissful silence, only the noises made within the perimeter can be heard
by those inside it.

I'm under the impression that they employ some form of active noise
cancellation, but I didn't look too far into it after I saw the price...

Sure. I saw a scheme. It's basically stereo ampfilier with invertor at
the input and adjustable gain for each channel. The background noise is
sampled by separate microphones on the headset, the signal inverted,
ampfilied and the result is SILENCE! :) Easy.

... at some frequencies; frequencies which are a half-octave off
from the set frequency will (for the reasons I explained earlier) be
double volume. As I said, limited usefulness.
