About the Nerd Boy book

Turns out that I can't just smack every NB strip ever into a book and sell it. For one, I'd rather not sell stuff with other people's intellectual property in it. That means that NB20, NB173, and (of course) the guest artist week is out. There's also some stuff that are just linkdumps or rants, so I'd rather not have NB133, NB180, NB189 and NB252 in there. That messes with the numbering, and I don't want numbers in the book anyway, so that means NB128 and NB143 don't make any sense. NB201 is just a stupid filler, that one is most definitely being left out. NB147 would be severely out of context in a book. It's fine on-line after Christmas, but out of the blue in a book it's just meaningless. Of course, I'd like opinions on this. If there's anything that you think really needs to be in the book (except the stuff that would basically infringe on copyright), then tell me. I also want to restrict the first book to the first year, more or less. Otherwise there's a chance I'd just get stuck in all the editing and stuff and just never finish the book. I found that NB284 feels very much like an ending. That's 133 pages, plus some kind of foreword and some new story arc. Thoughts? -- OO Joaquim Gndara .||. http://www.Nerd-Boy.net bb jg

Take out anything that doesn't work for one reason or another and
publish the rest as a "Best Of Nerdboy". No one has to know the
truth. But I would leave the Xmess one in there. All of the other
collected comic publishings do it.

Yeah, that's a big issue. Everyone views Nerd Boy in different fonts. Some people in Fixedsys, some in Lucida Console, and some in whatever font they have lying around. However, I draw them in Courier New. I twinge when I see Nerd Boy in other fonts. For example, in Fixedsys, NB's glasses are all squashed; the O's aren't round. And yes, I realize that it looks like NB's boots have heels in Courier. I guess he's a closet crossdresser (haw haw). -- OO Joaquim Gndara .||. http://www.Nerd-Boy.net bb jg

Which book, by the way? How did you > get it printed? I'm basically interested in all kinds of input. :) It was a small run, 100 copies, you can download the .pdf online at; http://abcgi.fly.to/justonelifetime It is a book by a relation of mine primarily about being an Australian pilot in the War, and about life in Australia over the last 80 so years. A typist entered the original typewriter print into a word document. I took it from there and edited, researched and wrote the notes, layout and design, back blurb, graphic work, and arranged printing etc. It cost $10 AUS per book to produce due to the low run, soft cover with 4 photo pages in the centre. Research on the web was fun. I used word and paint shop and adobe on a PC primarily. The pitfalls that occurred to me were; * Word is a pain in bottom for big documents with large bmp graphics, I had to use them as OLE links rather than embedded. And other niggly MS stuff. * Printer needed 1 full page per page PDF, not preformatted. You then instruct them on the layout and they will manipulate each page. * The printer forgot instructions about cover. Insist on seeing a demonstration copy and make sure they have that demo copy when they produce your run. Make it clear you won't pay one brass coin if they significantly deviate from the approved copy. * Make sure you do final check, I had others help with editing, and they introduced annoying errors at the last minute. * It was a lot more work and time than I expected or allowed for. * It is really hard to get perfect, even after many rereads. Definitely need others to look at it, but you need to control the copy too. In the end I had to decide to let it go, same as the 95% development rules. !!!*Keep an eye on your printer*!!! Please read the story and let me know what you think, it's a good tale, or at least about the layout etc. -- ABCGi - http://abcgi.fly.to "Just One Lifetime is all any of us are lucky enough to get and this novel will inspire you to make the most of yours."

Hmm, www.nerd-boy.net uses only two colours: black and some
pantone blue. That would be half the cost of full CMYK printing.
But this point is moot if Lulu uses digital printing, not offset.
Yes. this point is moot:
State-of-the-art print-on-demand technology allows each
book to be printed as it is purchased.
This means digital printing, and those machines only can do full CMYK.
oh well... let's look at the bright side: the book could be
b/w or full colour, depending on what customer sais :-)

Could you try a mock up with a smaller size for the font (may help people convert the ASCII on the page into pictures in their brain), and a full square graphical line frame (to contrast the ASCII inside the frame), and perhaps laying some pages differently where possible? Mixing it up Peanuts style, maybe even with a little overlap. --------------------------------- | NB | | -------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -------------- | | | | | | | | -------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -------------- | | #1 | --------------------------------- >>Anyway.
