The FAQ is posted to the ASCII groups, and to the *.answer groups each
Monday. You can also get it by fingering my account.

The FAQ will tell you how to make art, where to get art, GIF
convertors, Figlet, and other things.

That's exactly right, Lady WAS the model for that cocker spaniel. Due to
copyright laws, and how little I know of them, I change the names of all of my
pieces if they were taken from DISNEY characters. :)

It may be unnecessary, but it couldn't hurt. I figure if the picture is not
something that can be recognized, it won't make any difference. And if it
is something that CAN be recognized, maybe changing the name will make it
okay. :)

Not to flame, but doesn't changing the name also infringe on the copyright,
like giving the artist credit instead of Disney? Just curious.

Hm.. Maybe it does. All I know was what I was told, that if I wanted to
actually post the art I needed to change the character name. I could
change them all back, no problem, but now I"m so confused it'd just be
easier not to post any DISNEY art. I sure don't want to get into any
trouble over it.

If you don't want to get into trouble, why ask that your name be
reproduced should anyone else copy the artwork?

The only reason I can think of to ask that one's name go
along w/the art is so credit can be given where credit is due...
anyone else see a minor ethical problem here?

Don't get me wrong, I think its cool that you can convert
someone else's artwork from a GIF to ASCII by yourself. :-)

Well, whatever. I can see that this is not worth following up. I won't
be posting here in the future. For what it's worth, though, I'm not
converting gifs. I'm looking at a picture and drawing with keystrokes. If
I were using a pencil would you call it "photocopying by yourself?"

Maybe the reason I've asked my name to be left intact is because I've received
my own pictures (not all are disney related) back in the mail with someone
else's name on them instead of mine. I realize that ASCII art is not right
up there with great literary works, but if I spend three hours doing a picture
it's a little disconcerting all the same. Maybe if you had ever done a
picture you'd feel differently? Or have you done one?

The last thing I ever expected when I began posting to this newsgroup is
someone accusing me of minor ethical problems.

First of all, I would like to apologize up front to Scarecrow for not using
the subject line thingies, 'cuz I can't remember which one I should use.
At any rate, I thought I would respond to Ms. (Mrs.? - no offense intended)
Oviatt's post, and then add some art because I'll get hung otherwise.

MJ sighs. I wish you didn't feel that way, I really don't, tho I can't say
I blame you. The work you do that I have seen rates right up there with
the very best. I've tried to do some drawings in your style (see the funky
tree I posted here about a week ago and you will be able to tell I suck
lemons when it comes to that!) and I can appreciate how difficult a picture
like that can be. I can see where you have taken offense to what this
person has said in the previous post about converting .gifs to ASCII, and I
believe you are upset because they misunderstood. It is true that there
are a proliferation of converted pictures recently. And I certainly don't
mean to take away from them, because they are great pictures, but the work
you do just far surpasses them. They are doing with a .gif converter what
someone could do with a piece of tracing paper - you are doing it freehand.
That's what is needed to be understood. It's unfortunate that the ASCII
art loving world will be deprived of your work in the future.

I don't think it's much to ask of anyone to keep the creator's name with
their picture, and I think that recently more people have been doing it.
Your work CERTAINLY deserves to be credited to you, and I think your little
line at the end of the pictures helps to preserve the credit due you. It's
a shame that you have had so much trouble with this, and I think you are
right about being upset.

Well I've babbled enough, here's my art and then I'll go. Heck, it's
pretty much Normand's work anyway, so thanks to him for helping me!!

MJ,

THanks very much for your note. I really never intended to stir up this
hornet's nest like this. I wish I could just unpost but I don't think that's
an option.

Maybe it wouldn't be an issue if I never posted any characters such as
Disney or other cartoons, but to be honest those are some of the fun ones.
And when it comes right down to it, I suppose you could say that nearly every
source is someone else's idea, unless you're creating entirely from your mind.
Ling LIng came from a small valentine... The apple picture (which I don't know
if I posted here) came from a picture on a school paper, the picture of the
animals picking an apple came from a painting book. Yes, I change it quite a'
bit when I do it as ASCII art, but I do get basic ideas and inspiration from
other sources.

Before I found this newsgroup, the only ASCII art that I had ever seen that
was computer generated was basically abstract designs. THey were fun to
look at, but I had no idea that it could be so incredible. The picture of
Einstein in the ASCII FAQ was one of the nicest things I'd ever seen. And
to be honest, it was rather intimidating. I hesitated to post here at all
because I figured people were used to that quality and I didn't think my
pictures measured up. To me, it's so obvious the difference between what I
do and what a computer can generate. The detail on a computer-generated
picture is so very precise.

Well, now I'm the one who is babbling. THe author of the note which
prompted me to withdraw from this group wrote an apology. I appreciate his
effort. He apparently did not realize that the work I do is not computer
generated.

Thanks again for your note. I probably should have sent this privately, but
now that it's written I haven't got a clue as to how to do that. Oh, by the way,
I'm MRS. :) (And I've got six kids, who really enjoy this art stuff too.)

Um, hello... that was NOT intended to be a flame at all. I also really
don't care if you took it as one, because you sound pretty hostile to me.
I simply was using an analogy for converting .gifs, as compared to doing a
picture like that freehand. I personally don't know how to convert .gifs,
and I'm certainly not belittling the art that comes from .gif conversions,
but Susie's art is superior. Take a pill, would you please?
