One problem is the small resolution... most consoles have 80x25, which doesn't leave a lot of space for ASCII graphics.
On Linux, 'screen' is your friend for ASCII multitasking.

Philip

True, but that's not a lot of use if you can't switch from one application to another. Some things you can run in the background (with '&'), but if you want to have, say, two 'vim's open at the same time and switch between them, you need something like screen. (And before someone talks about virtual consoles -- usually there are about six of them, so imagine ten vims open instead.) Why don't you try Turbo C... Turbo C++ Now that those are WAY too old to be used, I guess the Licensing on them has been removed by Borland. But all the same, all programs that were built on TurboC, FoxPro, dBase were ASCII based, but YES!! No Graphics in ASCII as now. I'm not good at Linux, could you explain it? 'screen' allows you to open kind of like a virtual console. If you say 'screen program', then 'program' is started in such a way that you can disconnect from it and the program doesn't notice it. Then you can open another program in another virtual console. You can even disconnect from the host the programs are running on and they'll keep running. Later, you can reconnect to the virtual console and the display will look the same as when you last disconnected from it. You can also switch between active 'screen' sessions, a bit like Alt+Tab under Windows. So far, I've only used it with one virtual session at a time, to keep it open when I have to disconnect from the host, but you can start as many programs as you want that way. Cheers, Philip -- Philip Newton <nos...@gmx.li> That really is my address; no need to remove anything to reply. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

But with 132x50 (quite a "standard" text mode), you might be able to recognize something ;-) If you don't sit close to your screen, the resolution is sufficient to watch tv in ascii (aatv sure is a nice thing). The only problem I had with this little corner was, that the cursor always jumped into the next line causing everything to scroll down. Can't you put a character to that position and leave the cursor there?

The only problem I had with this little corner was, that > the cursor always jumped into the next line causing everything to scroll > down. Can't you put a character to that position and leave the cursor there? Nothing to do with whatever language you use. That is a (miss-)feature of your terminal (or display drawing driver/library on a PC). Good terminals have an virtual 81st character, to which they position the cursor after printing on the 80th column. If there then they linebreak/scroll only when the next character arrives. If annother positioning command comes before the next character, then no linebreak/scroll happens. PC display drivers (such as ANSI.SYS) and libraries (such as used by TurboPascal, TurboC, dbase, etc) should emulate this behaviour. Some do not. That is vendor specific brokenness, not language specific. -- Neil Franklin, nei...@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Hacker, Unix Guru, El Eng HTL/BSc, Sysadmin, Archer, Roleplayer - Intellectual Property is Intellectual Robbery
