Ahh, here it is. The idea that spawned the previous strip. IIRC,
this one actually emerged out of a daydream of mine about the
band Tenacious D and an argument they could have. I originally
thought that it would be a really funny gag to have a voice-over
that said "Two seconds later" between two lines of dialogue,
mostly because it's so redundant. I like to imagine Jack Black
reading Nerd Boy's dialogue in this episode. (He'd add a great
deal of cursing of course).

Did I mention that Tenacious D rocks and that their "Fucker"
skit is hilarious? :)

Have you been talking to a girl named Monica? This seems like a page
right out of my life. But she hasn't told me I ruined her life, yet.
But instead of "go talk to her" its been more like "fear is the mind
killer. Conquore your fear and ask him. He is a man and he will say
yes."

Well next Friday or Saturday we see if I get the "YOU RUINED MY LIFE!"
bit.

Nope.

It's funny how I seem to be able to do that without actually having a
life of my own. What is it in Nerd Boy that people can identify with?
The total lack of social skills?

Thought NB could do with some competition in the Bingo hall. Couldn't think how
to draw any of the other characters - thought about drawing Linda but can't
remember what she looks like. Plus, Bingo just isn't Bingo without the strange
comparisons between numbers and females !! :o)

I think you would be too if you hung out with Nerd Boy most every day.
She used to be a normal girl who was just a bit egocentric, I guess.

Diddled Fan Boy and added Linda.

Since I don't play Bingo, I really have no idea what you're talking about.

Possibly, but you're talking to the guy who wasn't happy just dialling up and
picking up e-mail through POP3 - I set up a second PC with Windows NT Server and
Exchange server so that it could connect via a network to my ISP's POP3 server,
download the mail through the main PC to it, so that the main PC can connect to
it and pick up the mail that way.

In short - I identify with NerdBoy, and I suspect my wife would identify quite
closely with Mandy (but I won't tell her that in case I get shot) :o)

Numbers in Bingo are read out by the person operating the machine.
Traditionally, they clarify the number they have just read with a little phrase,
kind of like "A for alpha, B for bravo" like airline pilots. The Bingo ones
tend to be related to ladies.

eg

"Two fat ladies - 88"
"Legs - 11"

There's also things like "All the 3's - 33" and so on and so forth.

I'm struggling to think if there's one for 69... }:o>

You're telling me...

I don't personally play Bingo but my Gran used to, and so I once asked the
obvious question of "How do you play" and there came my information.

This seems so out of character for Mandy. I would have thought her
response would have been an uncaring "What? Oh... Okay... Bye."

But then perhaps you'd have to revise the third panel as well.

While I understand that you like the "two seconds later" voice over,
it kind of takes away from the flow. Without the voice over, we really
would get the sense of the immediate segue from Nerdboy's thrill of
success to his anguish.

Hmm, I might be guilty of the age-old "author to audience dialogue"
mistake. I guess I simplified to get the pacing I wanted. However,
your line sounds too much like Mandy feels feeble and defeated.

                    The only thing you
                   ever do is heckle me.

That might do it, but I'm still not satisfied with it.

No. I think that wouldn't work at all; it feels too much like Nerd Boy's
line just continues into the next. This is my impression of that.

                  ..Thank you, Fan Boy!
                 She's gone FOREVER now! ...
                       ,

                     -\\.
                      dd

Which makes NB's line in the third panel seem sarcastic. It's just not
as clear without the voice over, which indicates a slight pause.

It's a folk rock band.. or something. It's a kind of two man comedy act
slash rock band combo.

Which ones? The videos "Fuck Her Gently" or "Tribute", or the diary
clips on the website? They're all funny though. Did I miss anything?

That certainly wasn't the impression I was aiming for. I was trying
for a disinterested sounding "What? Oh..." followed by a cheery
sounding "Okay... Bye." (I got that VERY response when after much
agonizing, I told someone I was dating that I didn't like the way I
was being treated and that we should stop seeing each other.)

But as you have pointed out, the tone doesn't come out. How about:

                    The only thing you
                   ever do is heckle me.
I've had enough! Works for me...

Note that in this version, Mandy's eyes are open, showing that she is
her usual uncaring self.

"Uncaring"? Remember NB6? http://nerdboy.xepher.net/nbbrowse.php?strip=6
When Mandy sabotages the robot? How exactly is that "uncaring"..? :\
That's one of the most character defining moments in the strip, IMO.

I don't know if this is off-character, since I don't know them that
well. (at episode 85, still reading). The way I picture the relation
between Mandy and Nerd boy, is that he is just a toy or amusement to her,
which easily can be replaced.

Did YOU do that? I am a little puzzled about who ascii'ed what here.
In any case: it's wonderful again.

The idea is one thing, to remember at the right time - another.
I always enjoy these small discoveries (yes - I did see that this
was not a typo but done deliberately - and what it meant. It's fun.)

We-ell... No. There's some kind of connection between them. If Nerd Boy
was easily replaced, why hasn't he been already?

thanks I think :) I think you agree on, art is hard work, tweaking is easy.
I'm glad it makes sense to others than myself.

it's highly dependent on the font used. in Lucida Typewriter there is
very little difference between 0 and O: the zero is a pixel narrower.
I didn't notice the effect, and even if I look closely, it only makes
Nerd Boy's right eye bug out a little.

Yeah, I saw your other post. And see what you mean.
Did you have to make their lives so complex :)

Could it be that she is atracted to his genious, but is repulsed by his
pathetic social skills?

Its a Calvin thing I think.
Best used one time, when he get's what he wants, but realizes that it's not
exactly what he want's, in fact it sucks bigtime.
It's also often used when he is plotting something evil.

But now that I'm reminded: Arrrghhhhhhh - English... it's SO
inadequate! (I'd ask you why you didn't read my mind, if I had any
mind left to read.)

Of course what I mean is "careless". I see Mandy as a selfish
opportunist with a vague sort of conscience. Whatever amuses her is
what she does. But she likes to take the easy way. If someone stands
up to her, she'll leave - her vague conscience telling her not to hurt
anyone. (But of course, she's YOUR character. I may be misreading her
entirely.)

Not entirely, actually I think you're more or less spot on; you're just
missing an important detail. Like I said in another post somewhere around
these parts, there's a reason Mandy hasn't already left Nerd Boy, never to
come back. She does have feelings, even though she might be good at hiding
them most of the time. Even though I might not have actively intended to
do so at the time of writing, I think now that this moment was a good place
to let them shine through.

This is the first time Nerd Boy has ever said anything directly hurtful to
Mandy. They were friends. How is a person supposed to react?

Whew, I should write a rant about this. I apparently have a lot more to
say about it than I thought.

Did anyone see my new rants section, btw? :D

It wasn't planned, it just kind of happened. :)

Hmm, I don't really know, but I don't think so. Here's a case in point
that you might not have read yet:
http://nerdboy.port5.com/nbbrowse.php?strip=132

I think she simply loves hating him. :)

A Pyrrhic victory?

I've read Calvin & Hobbes, but in Courier it just doesn't look like
Calvin very much. Maybe I just can't remember that Calvin expression.
