Mike Throll never had a chance .. the correct answer was not even one of the options !

The Viking Leif Erikson and his crew discovered America about 500 before Christopher
Colombus .. and before them the Indians discovered it.

Christopher Colombus however have the doubtful honour of making it known to and popular
for the "civilised" countries to explore and settle this great continent .. and stealing
the land from the natives that already occupied it .. annilating thoose who stood in their
way and placing the rest in special areas where they did'nt bother anyone else .. sort of
like consentration camps.

The Vikings just kept this knowledge of the new lands to themselves.

The Native Americans didn't discover it, they lived there already.
They are only called Indians because Columbus (or someone else)
was expecting to find India.

** no information certified to be correct **.

The "correct" term for native inhabitants is Aboriginals.

It's strange because only the Australian native people are called this.

Well, it's not like the human species exactly evolved there; they had to
move in from somewhere. So, yeah, they discovered it. A damn long time
ago, but they did.

>They are only called Indians because Columbus (or someone else)

*groan* Yeeees, we _know_ that. (And I think it was indeed Columbus. IIRC
he was working off outdated mathematics that most geometry geeks of the
day _knew_ were wrong.)

YG: As far as the whole Leif Erikson thing, weren't there Irishmen a
century or two before even him? I've heard stories of Phoenician settlements
in modern-day Brazil, but the evidence seems to me to be a tad weak; same
deal with the similar stories of Minoan settlements in what's now
Massachusetts.

The Indians as they are called are actually INDIANS from India, so that
makes it very clear beyond doubt that America actually belonged and was
habitated by Indians ;)

The vikings might also have discovered it but there is no documentation
on that...

?:)

Note that this, while being true, does not mean non-aboriginal
Australians are particularly enlightened people, nor does it mean
aboriginal Australians have achieved any unusually high level of
self-determination or social security. We do use that term though.

meh. the Indians were pretty stupid to live in a place called America
and not call themselves Americans, now weren't they? seems to me they
have only themselves to blame.

America comes from Americo, that was the name of an expeditionist where
somebody who designed maps was in love with, and next to his maps he kept
scribing Americo and after a time they thought the land that was near the
text was called so, so the name America was founded becuase of a
gay-relation
he also didnt know that it was not Americo but Amerigo,

Did anyone ever tell you they lived there before Amerigo proved it was a new
continent and gave his name to it? Or were you educated in a US public

They lived in what now is called America, that name came after the
discovery, in honor to an explorer called Americo Vespucius(I don't know the
name in English).......... And the Indian term was already dispersed.
What I really don't like it's to see people calling America the USA, the
use is extremely dispersed even thoug there a lot of other Americans
actually not being from the USA.

That's not clear, and I haven't see documentation about it, I thought
Indians weren't sailers, furthermore Christopher was expecting India, the
native's skin color may have confused him......

There's no documentation, there are facts!
There are a line of ports rounding the south coasts of Chili and
Argentina, dating before Chris
I think there's a great portion of viking history that's not documentated,
the documentation came when Christianity started to fuck up their culture,

oh, right. so now they're not only stupid for calling themselves the
wrong thing, they're stupid for calling their *continent* the wrong
thing.

you know, bucko, this is the twenty-first century. racism is -- or is
supposed to be -- a thing of the past. maybe you shouldn't be implying
that an entire race of people were so stupid as to get mixed up over
what country they were living in.

So they built some cities and established traderoutes , like they normally did.
There can still be found some runestones there.

If my memory of 8th grade social studies serves me, THIS is how it
goes:

-The "Indians" come from Asia over the land bridge and settle across
Canada(As for calling them "Indians" instead of Native Americans, it's
a matter of habit and the fact that one of them has about half as many
syllables as the other.)

-The vikings came and left.

-Columbus sailed to the tropics or something

-Amerigo Vespucci(I kept having trouble with not accidentally calling
him Amerigo Bonasera(Which doesn't mean anything to somebody who
hasn't read the Godfather)), a mapmaker if I remember correctly, named
America after either himself or some slang that was popular in the
area and the time or something.

-Man walks on moon

-Pepsi releases "Pepsi Clear"

well, obviously, Johnny, they WERE Indians. it's their own damn fault
for trying to live in the wrong country. this same thing happened to
all those little republics when Bismarck formed Germany.

if you're going to live in an area that's not named after you, you
should be prepared to accept the consequences.

Actually it was called Crystal Pepsi... it was colorless Pepsi (so it
looked like Sprite or 7Up or whatver)

You can still buy unopened cans and bottles of it on eBay =)
