Andrew Carpenter said into the tin can on that end of the string: >"CeeJay" <new...@ceejay.cjb.nOt> wrote in message >news:3be06cc2$0$25357$edf...@dspool01.news.tele.dk... > >> The Viking Leif Erikson and his crew discovered America about >> 500 before Christopher Colombus .. and before them the Indians >> discovered it. >The Native Americans didn't discover it, they lived there already. Well, it's not like the human species exactly evolved there; they had to move in from somewhere. So, yeah, they discovered it. A damn long time ago, but they did. >They are only called Indians because Columbus (or someone else) >was expecting to find India. *groan* Yeeees, we _know_ that. (And I think it was indeed Columbus. IIRC he was working off outdated mathematics that most geometry geeks of the day _knew_ were wrong.) YG: As far as the whole Leif Erikson thing, weren't there Irishmen a century or two before even him? I've heard stories of Phoenician settlements in modern-day Brazil, but the evidence seems to me to be a tad weak; same deal with the similar stories of Minoan settlements in what's now Massachusetts.
