Do these steps:

Click Tools/Options.
Click the Send tab.
Select News Sending Format - HTML .
Click the Read tab.
Click the Font button.
Select Courier New (or another fixed-width font, like Fixedsys or Lucida
Console) for Fixed-Width _AND_ Proportional.
(personal preference) Select Font Size: Smallest.

Ok, your problem. You are using Outlook Express, and it is possible that the
font you are composing messages in is not the font you are reading them in.
Make sure both "send" and "read" font settings are to a monospaced font like
Courier New.

Another possible problem: If your picture is close to the left margin, it
may want to "hug" it--Outlook Express considers a single space at the
beginning of a line as unimportant (probably because it may be a result of
word wrapping) and therefore does not show them.

so you will probably see (simple example
:)
the same as
 :)

which doesn't make a difference there but will on multiline asciis.

You scared me for my sig, such that I went out and checked, but at least
for Outlook Express on my Mac, my sig looks OK. Or better yet, it looks
even better in OE. OE has a large line spacing and the little devil
looks long and slender in OE, not bad at all  :-))  I couldn't see an
adjustment for line spacing in the preferences, though, I am wondering
about that!

Awshucks, the body of the devil has moved one space to the left in
Outlook Express (in OE for Windows to be precise, it doesn't happen on
my Mac.) 

I think, I need to OE-proof my sig like below. I don't want to put to
many spaces between the dots on the left hand side and the actual pic,
because that would reduce the resilience of the sig against proportional
font. (You can still recognize the pic in proportional font  :-)
although it looks distorted in funny ways.)

Fortunately, my F&B are automatically OE-proof since I use panels  :-)

Well, I think others on this newsgroup may want to OE-proof their work
too, OE is quickly becoming in widespread use.

 Hmm.  We were just discussing whether colour was fequent enough
 to be in the FAQ. Short answer is, plain text won't do colour
 and so no you can't properly send colour email because everybody
 hasn't agreed a standard system for recieving it.  If they're
 not on the system you try, it won't work for them.


 In HTML you do it like this, <FONT COLOR="FF0000"> red text </FONT>.
 Pure ascii has no facility for it.  You could only do it in some
 extended format such as HTML i.e. send your recipients what's 
 called a "MIME enclosure" of an HTML which automatically launches
 the browser on it at the other end.  If the other guy has those
 facilities enabled, he may be annoyed or confused at receiving
 incoprehensible gobbledegook full of tags.
