On 26 April 98, cho...@yahoo.com uttered words quite like these:

You might want to keep an eye on discussions in the news.* groups, to
watch any developments of such a suggestion. As far as I know, no formal
proposal on this has yet come up. However, I've seen this kind of idea
brought up a number of times.

The possibility seems to make sense. Either as a main first-level binary
hierarchy or possibly as an alt.* subhierarchy.

That said, I read with interest the story of ATT Worldnet's recent creation
of an html newsgroup within its internal hierarchy. I thought I'd read a
similar story as well with IBM.net internal groups, but maybe my memory is
muddled. Anyway, here are excerpts from a couple of posts on the ATT story
(made to a mindpring.* group about a week ago):

: In no time it was a ghosttown. But I say it would be fine to creat a
: html.* hierarchy for HTML posters.

This reminds me. I was just reading recently about the W3 consortium
agreeing on a standard for the mark-up language to present mathematics
on the web. They're looking at something called MathML (mathematical
markup language). Right now, mathematicians have to use big clumsy
screenshots saved as .gifs etc to present mathematical material such as
formulas. Or struggle to represent what they can in ASCII. With MathML,
a standard on the web is now in sight. Yet mathematicians will remain
quite limited in communication with each other in the Usenet medium.
In something like an html hierarchy, however, this barrier would be
overcome.

I think we agree. Native usenet is straight text. Anything else should be
in a well-defined hierarchy. If we need more hierarchies for those ISPs
who wish to carry them, yes, they should be created. And no cross-overs:
I hope more ISP's follow suit and discard misplaced html onto the cutting
room floor...

Colinstein, you are completely changing your set of anti-html arguments,
from

1) html is off-topic in aaa

to something completely different

2) ISPs against html posts

This change to 2) is even more remote from ascii art.

Why don't you continue the discussions along the lines of 1) ?
Did you run out of arguments?

This is nice.. but isn't our problem discussing HTML, not posting in HTML?
:)

All of MSN's local groups are HTML allowed. There's not any problem with
this, because MSN's news servers only allow outlook Express to log on to
them, and OE does HTML.

There are many posts, and the majority are in HTML. The best part is
helping others learn how to use it--one of our members even went and made a
whole tutorial, on how to snag and use images, javascripts, etc., in posts.
I see more great images than I would see just anywhere on the web... New
tricks pop up too--on April Fool's Day, someone set up a (ActiveX Control?)
something that accused the reader (personally--by MSN id) of spamming.. lol
it tricked everybody. And then I used it later on the same day <G>.

(Even my signature is in HTML. OE pares it down for plaintext posts. It's
got an IMAGE, a STYLESHEET, a TABLE [I can hear you screaming], and links to
web pages and chat rooms. It used to have a counter, but I got rid of it
when it died :( and it was up so high!)

But then, "members.non-text" doesn't sound like something that could survive
as a newsgroup anyway. What kind of /community/ would that have?

Here's a favorite quote I saw ;) in response to a plain text post:
[Re: Woooo...look what *I* can do!!!]
[1/9/98 10:23 AM EDT]
>What kind of sick, twisted weirdo are you? Posting in plain text? You
cannot post to >this newsgroup unless you have pictures, moving things,
funky fonts/backgrounds, sounds >or marquees in your messages. Given all
the wonder service these servers have provided, >it's only fair to waste as
much bandwidth as possible. <g>

[Both the usenet and the local news servers go down at least once a week,
usually on weekends. hence the 'wonder service'...]

I think you must be very confused Colin!

Your post has _nothing_ to do with the html discussions here recently.
We were discussing how to present ascii art in html documents, we were
not using html in our posts to the newsgroup. I suggest that you learn
what the difference is before making any further comments on the
subject.

(hint: I know _html_newsgroups_ where html posts get flamed... The
discussion there is _about_ html, not _in_ html...)

OK, maybe I am confused, but in my view discussion of how to present
Ascii Art in HTML documents belongs in *.html or html.*
newsgroups, or alternatively on people's websites where full
illustrations of html-ised ascii-art pictures can be displayed along
with the tutorial and advice. References to the websites can always be made.

Same applies to Java in my view. I really don't think alt.ascii-art
is the place for tutorials on the use of HTML or JAVA or even
coloured ascii-artwork. Just my opinion.

This is a free and unmoderated newsgroup and people can post
whatever they wish to post but they have to accept that other users
may dislike something being posted and publicly object.

Maybe there should be a section in the FAQ on HTML and JAVA as
someone has already suggested.

Discussion here in alt.ascii-art can surely only lead to newcomers
thinking that actual HTML postings are welcome here...and we get
enough of them posting HTML already, as well as the extended characters.
Mercifully the colour-posting fiends are quiet at present.

> (hint: I know _html_newsgroups_ where html posts get flamed... The

Some newsgroups readers hate even the mention of HTML on Usenet.
Others see it's use in newsgroups as a form of Net-Abuse and say it
should be confined to the Web, and the Web is _not_ Usenet. Still
others consider HTML as binary postings.

Hey, I just had a late thought...perhaps the moderated newsgroup,
"rec.arts.ascii" would welcome HTML stuff ? :-) :-)

That forwarded posting was not intended as an argument but as an
example showing someone else's viewpoints on HTML and its use in
Usenet newsgroups. The MindSpring thread is a big thread currently
running in the newsgroup " alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent ".

I happen recently to have started to use Free Agent in addition to
the TIN newsreader so I am also reading the newsgroup,
alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent right now.

Do you want me to start a thread in "alt.ascii-art" about how to use
the newssreader Free-Agent for Ascii Art postings ? The Free-Agent
fonts are different...and care is needed with right-hand margin
settings...shall I go on ? *8-)

Good, good, the html part is done and will develop further. (What then
is left over of your objections?) Further, apart from Java, there is
also Javascript (which is something quite different), and colour. Those
are also things that some consider "pure" ascii (not that I agree with
that statement.)

Good, good, you stated that this is _not_ an argument in this debate.
This confirms the point made by BKN as well.

Why not? As others are already doing that in parallel threads, anything
that has to do with accessing ascii art is useful for readers of this
newsgroup. ascii is no longer ascii in the rapidly developing Internet,
Outlook Express (in the other thread) and Free-Agent (in this thread)
are examples, more examples are sure to follow ...

IMHO, this is a judgement call that can only be made by the individual
posting the message, on a case by case basis. As has been mentioned before,
something of this subject matter could be cross posted to a *.html or html.*
group, but I strongly feel it has the most relevance right here in
alt.ascii-art.

As is evident, there are alot of us here who have websites and want to
discuss the most appropriate way(s) to display the artwork on their pages
amongst other ASCII artists and and aficionados.

> >Same applies to Java in my view. I really don't think alt.ascii-art

I'd disagree with you on the JAVA, and have mixed feelings about the
colored ASCII. That's my opinion, and it appears to be the majority at the
moment.

> >This is a free and unmoderated newsgroup and people can post

Yes you've made us quite aware of this by publicly objecting too many
times to count. Can you just come to terms with the fact that we want to talk
about applying ASCII art on a webpage without being harassed? Another newsgroup
is not necessary. I really think this thread is a phase. One of learning and
experimentation -- which we as a group are benefitting from by sharing the best
ways to display the ASCII art form in a fashion it was intended to be seen.

> >Maybe there should be a section in the FAQ on HTML and JAVA as

I've already added it to my FAQ which I will be uploading shortly to
http://artpacks.acid.org/faqs/faq-altasciiart.html

The FAQ for this newsgroup is posted almost daily, but there will always
be someone not paying attention. :)

But we were not USING it in usenet newsgroups... we were DISCUSSING how
to use it to present ascii art on homepages... Please learn the
difference between talking about something and doing something. A couple
of extreme examples to get you on the right track, there is a difference
between talking about sex and actually having sex, there is a difference
between talking about murder and actually murdering somebody. In the
same way there is a difference between talking (in a newsgroup) about
how to present ascii art in html documents and using html in usenet
posts.

I haven't heard anybody here saying that we should make html posts to
this (or any other) newsgroup. On that point I have only heard people
say exactly what you are saying in that post. You are getting two
entirely different things mixed up: how to post to newsgroups and what
to discuss in newsgroups.

Why not? I've seen several such discussions about Netscape News, AOL's
news program, Outlook Express [?] and other news programs and have not
heard many complaints about that. I have also seen such discussions
about various text editors, without any complaints from those who don't
happen to use those particluar programs.

And WHY doesn't it belong in this newsgroup? As far as I can see the
topic "how to present ascii art in html" concerns both html and ascii
art.

What do you mean? I don't think I have seen *any* discussions about Java
in this newsgroup - ever.

Why whould they think that? Or do you belong to the group of people who
think that talking about sex in schools will lead to more teenages
having sex?

It would be pretty weird if the people in alt.html and
comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html did not mention html... Those are
two text-only newsgoups (just like alt.animals.felines and
rec.pets.cats.anecdotes are text-only newsgroups) where people DISCUSS
how to write html. If you make a post to either of these groups USING
html you will most likely be flamed for it.

Yes, I definitely agree with you on these points. I still don't see how
they relate to discussing how to present ascii art in html.
