I do want to make a general comment on the issue as a whole. If one or more makers of ascii pics/sigs take a half-hearted stance on the intellectual ownership, then users of ascii pics/sigs will say: "Why do _I_ have to leave those silly letters in? Others delete them, or replace them with their own initials. The makers of the ascii pics/sigs don't care!" Intellectual ownership of ascii pics/sigs is already a laughing matter even for their owners (i.e. the makers of ascii pics/sigs themselves,) let alone for the rest of the world. And the point of the above comment is, that it will remain that way, unless the makers of ascii pics/sigs cease to send out mixed messages to the rest of the world. ================================================================== [] ,, [] [] ( "> Visit the Gallery of the 'steins! The Maker was me, Donovan. Just like in my ascii pages, I appreciate the leaving of my initials. However, I don't feel that I would rather people stopped using my sigs and spreading the pics around, just because they want to take the initials out. Making more people aware of ascii-art is the best way to make it more popular! So I don't think others should replace initials with their own, but if they need to remove them for looks, well it's a good trade off. I mean this is supposed to be fun, not some macho ego kick. I WILL SAY THIS THOUGH! Until the notorious Pete got involved, I was just going to blow off the user's, Mika Leppanen's, comments. Mika is one rude person! I mean I gave him permission to do just what he did and he still copped an attitude. Those are the kind of people that take the fun out of things. And that is his right to be that way. I believe in freedom of SPEECH. SO more power to him. I would just think most people would appreciate the ability to do this than have a "screw you attitude." *S* So, I'm not real sure what Pete is getting at, but I do believe in not replacing initials with your own and as far as removing them, well, who can stop em'? Oh well, one bad egg out of a thousand. Most people write me an email telling me that they are going to use one of the sigs from my web page. http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/6558/sigs.html#top They either ask if it is OK to remove the initials or just say thanks for making them and leave the initials in. I look at it this way: I want to share my drawings with everyone, but as long as they don't pass them off as their own and (as you say) make money from my work without my permission, I'm OK with that. Maybe I just get to nice at times, but I REALLY want to believe people are good for the most part. Who knows, Miki, may read all this and make an appology. If he does, great, I would accept it. If he doesn't, then it was no loss in my life and it shouldn't be in yours either. BTW, I really think it is great how you all started voicing your feelings toward this matter so quickly. It just goes to show, what a great group of people are gathered here. I'm proud to call all of you my internet friends! The art is great but your personalities and attitudes are what really make me enjoy this newsgroup. *wiping a tear* *S* Thanks to all of you. -- Peace, Donovan (`/\ `=\/\ __...--~~~~~-._ _.-~~~~~--...__ `=\/\ Poems by \ / ICQ# 812836 \\ Original Poetry, Ascii-Art & `=\/ Donovan V bak...@gwtc.net \\ Animations, Dragons, Baby //_\___--~~~~~~-._ | _.-~~~~~~--...__\\ Pictures, Kool-Aid Info., // ) (..----~~~~._\ | /_.~~~~----.....__\\ Secret Link Game, DA QUIZ! ===( INK )==========\\|//==================== ejm\___/ dwb`---` http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/6558/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (".___.") Most I don't think would even know about initials. The first time I saw one of my little pics being used was when someone else was complimenting them on the sig (standard stuff -- only the art, person's name and email) and them saying thanks. That just made me realize that it didn't really matter so much... even tho in that case it didn't have my initials on it... I'd still rather have them keep the initials on, tho. :) > Donovan > (`/\ > `=\/\ __...--~~~~~-._ _.-~~~~~--...__ > `=\/\ Poems by \ / ICQ# 812836 \\ Original Poetry, Ascii-Art & > `=\/ Donovan V bak...@gwtc.net \\ Animations, Dragons, Baby > //_\___--~~~~~~-._ | _.-~~~~~~--...__\\ Pictures, Kool-Aid Info., > // ) (..----~~~~._\ | /_.~~~~----.....__\\ Secret Link Game, DA QUIZ! > ===( INK )==========\\|//==================== > ejm\___/ dwb`---` http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/6558/ > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > (".___.") Licensing someone to change a picture (in this case: leaving out > initials) does not harm the author's claim on intellectual ownership. That's the theory. But in practice, and like most other rights, the onus is upon the owner to assert his right. Or to say things the other way around, if you do not assert your intellectual property of an ascii pic by at least signing it, then as a _practical_ matter, you have lost your intellectual property. The same as a bicycle that you abandoned somewhere, you can not really blame the person who then took it, since you have neglected to assert your ownership. > Please read about copyrights before you start making up a law of your > own. I think you refer to my request to add a line "The 'steins after Pete Casso" This is not a law of my own. This is common practice. For example, open up any of your software manuals, say from company A, and you will see the copyright acknowledgments to the other companies B to Z, and that's the assertion that I meant in the above. Theoretically speaking, you are not allowed to photocopy a few pages from a book, that is against copyright law. Practically speaking, nobody will say anything if you did. The author of the book will probably be even happy if you do, since that will help propagate his book. However, it is a different matter if you do a mass production, that's where copyrights will be asserted. The same with the 'steins. I really, really welcome emulators of the 'steins and there have been quite few 'stein emulations in the past. But if you do more than just a couple of emulations, then I will need to insist on the copyright notice. That's common practice. The root of the problem with intellectual property of ascii pics is cultural in nature. Most (not all) makers of ascii pics even find the notion of intellectual property a laughable matter. To say this explicitly, they laugh at the notion, that their own brainchild is their intellectual property! And with this abysmal lack of assertion within the ascii community, it is no wonder that the rest of the world does not even know about intellectual property of ascii pics. In my view, and considering this abysmal lack of assertion, the ascii community can not really blame the rest of the world if it changes or deletes initials in good faith "because _my_ sig has to have _my_ initials" or "those letters look out of place and ugly" or whatever the rationale happens to be. (It is for this very reason, that in the recent incident, I avoided commenting on the particular incident as such, but I did comment on the issue at large, which started this thread.) The ascii community can (only slowly) change this cultural issue by consistently practicing the assertion of intellectual property of ascii pics within the ascii community itself, and by sending consistent and assertive (as opposed to half-hearted) messages to the outside world. This topic has been discussed in past wars, BTW ;-)) ================================================================== [] ,, [] [] ( "> Visit the Gallery of the 'steins! If you write a Mickey Mouse or 'stein story without using Mickey Mouse or 'stein characters, then as a practical matter you might as well use different names. If you nevertheless use the Mickey Mouse or 'stein name then you need to add an acknowledgement, i.e. you don't get a free ride on the names, just like you don't get a free ride on the pics. Pics or storylines or both can obviously be emulated from the original in many, many ways. As far as the 'steins are concerned, if there is a high degree of similarity of pics or storylines, then I would like to see the acknowledgement "The 'steins are copyright Pete Casso". If there are significant changes, I would like to see the acknowledgement "The 'steins after Pete Casso". Again, these acknowledgements are common practice in case of *more often than occasional use* (nobody will say anything in case of occasional use) ======================================================== [] . + . ok i'm a total newbie i'm experimenting and trying to learn there are sites that let you use their sigs if you leave their initials well i copy them and paste them as text file but then they go all squished up what am I doing wrong?? probably very simple answer but as I say - total newbie sj
On Sat, 10 Jul 1999 19:20:04 +1000, SJ <S.M...@uq.net.au> quoth: >ok >i'm a total newbie >i'm experimenting and trying to learn Welcome to alt.ascii-art! We're all friendly people here, who're glad to have you. ;*) Oh, and be sure to read the FAQ.. Which brings me to your next question.. >there are sites that let you use their sigs if you leave their initials >well i copy them and paste them as text file >but then they go all squished up >what am I doing wrong?? >probably very simple answer but as I say - total newbie >sj > Alright -- there are two possibilities as to why this is happening. At least that I can think of. Here they are: 1. The program you are pasting the text into is using a non-fixed-width font. If you can find out how to, change the font to a fixed-width one: ie, Courier New, Monaco, etc. 2. The website you are pasting from is using a non-fixed-width font. There's nothing to do about this but to inform the person who owns the site of their mistake. I hope this helps. -- __ ______________________ ,-' `. | Clover Fernchild | / ,-. \ |----------------------| .' `-o' `-._ | * To email, replace | / ._`--.' | 'con' with 'com.' * | ( ( `-' |----------------------| ) ) | "Carpe Denim -- | / ,----. ;---. | Seize the pants." | / ____ \ )___ \ |----------------------| / `' | `' | "Veni; Vidi; Visa -- | / ) | I came, I saw, | ;'.-(,'.-'-.'-.'-;'.-.'.;'. | I did a little | \ \._ | shopping." | ; `--- |----------------------| \ | "Click click click!" | ;,_ | - Flipper | cf `-. |______________________| `--`-.__ , | | `--`---' | | _ _ ___ __ __ ___ ____ / ]| T / \ | T | / _]| \ / / | | Y Y| | | / [_ | D ) / / | l___ | O || | |Y _]| / / \_ | T| |l : !| [_ | \ \ || |l ! \ / | T| .
