Delurking...

I won't be surprised if most of you don't remember me. I hope at least
some do, like Veronica, Joan or llizard... I used to post here for a
little while almost three years ago and I participated in a.a.a
Christmas calendar in '98 (I think) with a "hug" picture. I even used to
regular Veronica's ASCII chat that summer, like diddling with my
self-portrait.

I haven't given up ASCII art, though I had a very long break. My ASCII
art page still exists at
http://www.angelfire.com/mn/Maija/asciiart.html. I have to admit I've
even start drawing ANSI (heretic!), even though I have no BBS history or
such. My first picture even placed 7th in Assembly2k demoparty. </brag>

This week I drew some new ASCIIs... Two umbrellas / sunshades can be
found among my "new" ASCII artpieces

the sweet Matt Groening comic "Akbar and Jeff".

Hmm... Maybe I need some more practice, that looks so ...plain!

Also, the reason why I decided to delurk (redelurk?) is that I am
writing an article about ASCII art for a Finnish computer magazine
Enter. The mag has homepage at http://www.enterlehti.fi, but it's pretty
awful and of course in Finnish.

So... I'll have to introduce people to ASCII art, review some pages and
software, I'm already thinking of ACiDDraw, some other ASCII editors
Figlet and some image->ASCII converter (preferably one with a fancy GUI
so I can get good screen captures ;). Any ideas for what applications to
write about? And of course I have the chance to show some of you
people's artwork!

So... if someone has something against getting fame with their pictures
and URLs, please tell me. ;) I'd be grateful if you posted some of the
very greatest artpieces, preferably in many different styles and those
of you who have very nice signatures (especially those where the picture
is embedded in the text or vice versa), could you post or email them to
me? I haven't collected anything. :( I can of course omit your real
email address if you want me to. And please let me know any ideas, URLs,
pictures, etc you have! I promise you a full credit.

A lot of the old-timers (I just realized I probably qualify as one)
that don't post much right now seem to stay here mostly lurking.  I
know I do, anyway -- I haven't got around to doing much new ascii art
lately, but I still read the group regularly.  You might be surprised
of how many people here remember you.

Well, mine (http://www.sci.fi/~iltzu/ascii/) is on a .fi server, if
that counts for anything. :-) Still all English, though.  I just put
in a link to my experimental FIGLet server, which makes it the only
page on the whole site I've modified this year.  I really need to do
something about that some day.

sigs and URLs and proggies! Especially nice would be if everyone posted
their personal favorites. Not too big pics, so that I can fit more of
them, not too small, because they will likely be minimized a lot...

Krogg already sent me a few emails with nice pics and I browsed through
Joan's latest files and found three pictures that I really liked and
that were of very nice size / topic. (The funny frog you posted not so
long time ago, the "ranch" style house and a dog with a computer). Do
you mind if I use them in my magazine article?

BTW, I was in the library and read a British computer magazine called
".net", they had stuff about different HTML tags and they had
"illustrated" the way <pre> tag works - with pics drawn by Joan. Cool!
They even left the initials on.

And I'm still asking something - I only have a few ASCII art related
applications to review - what would be some good ASCII editors for
Windows? What about nice conversion software?

I don't really understand why you don't just surf the www pages.
There are tons of nice pictures easy to find nowadays and you
know best how not-too-big-and-not-too-small they are.

Did they? I bet they got the written permission from Joan to 
use them as well. That's what you should do too.

You surely know Meph's editor and TheDraw - I don't know
anything else that good.

Indeed.  In case I didn't make that absolutely clear, any picture I've
ever posted on the web or usenet is free game if you or anyone else
wants to publish it.  Just keep the sig intact.  My web page says more
or less the same thing, and I believe this to be fairly common among
ascii artists in general, though many only allow noncommercial use
without explicit permission.  Asking never hurts, anyway.

As for recommending other people's pictures, there's so much good art
out there to make it hard to choose or even remember all the choices,
but Shanaka Dias and Hayley Jane Wakenshaw come to mind as authors of
several suitable pics, IMHO.  Neither one seems to have a working web
page at the moment, unfortunately.

too, like many of the others, have placed a statement on my webpage that
as long as the drawings aren't used for commercial purposes and the
initials are left intact, they can be copied. There are lots of drawings
