REQ: Spinal Tap

REQ: Spinal Tap

alt.ascii-art · 14 messages · 1 Oct 2000 - 7 Oct 2000
I would like to request some ASCII art related to the rock group Spinal
Tap -- maybe a logo, maybe a picture of the band.

If you can help, please e-mail joe...@concentric.net

I maintain an FAQ about Spinal Tap, and I'd like to dress it up with a
bit of ASCII art. Of course, the ASCII artist who supplies the picture
will receive due credit in the FAQ.

I thank you in advance for your help.

URLs to pictures on the web might help. Do you mean something like this:

http://www.centuryinter.net/neighbors/spinaltap.html

?

You Do of course know there is no band called Spinal Tap,
and that was comedic actors performing what could only be called a "spoof"
on heavy metal "music"... although exploding drummers would add to a show nicely....

I like Spinal Tap, but I do not think I could draw well enough
to do it for you: not large-size figures and faces. Therefore
I did not bother replying just to say "I am not up to it."

It would help if you gave the URL of some pictures (n.b. NOT
in any circumstances binary pictures on this newsgroup)
to remind us exactly what they look like.

"This is Spinal Tap" was a 'mockumentary'. :)

No one has responded, so it's time to start whining.

Harry Shearer? Is that the very same Harry Shearer that does Ned Flanders in
the Simpsons? I know Spinal Tap has been on the Simpsons once, so it might
well be possible.

They are one and the same. Shearer is the voice of Flanders, Mr. Burns,
Smithers, Kent Brockman, Otto the bus driver, Principal Skinner, and
many, many other characters. Spinal Tap has appeared on "The Simpsons,"
most notably in an episode called "The Otto Show." (The make brief
cameos in a couple of other episodes.) Character actor Michael McKean is
probably best known as Lenny on "Laverne & Shirley," while Chris Guest
is the director and star of other mock-umentaries as "Waiting For
Guffman" and "Best in Show." All three were regulars on "Saturday Night
Live."

Or as Marty DiBergi said, a "rockumentary."

That term was actually coined in the movie "This Is Spinal Tap" and now
is accepted enough to appear in dictionaries.

And you do, of course, know that Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins),
Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel), and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) wrote
and played their own music and actually toured as Spinal Tap and
recorded two full-length albums of songs. They *are* very much a band,
thank you very much, just one that happened to use fictional names and
characters in a movie. McKean, Guest, and Shearer are actually in
another band as well -- a folk act called The Folksmen.

Fans of Spinal Tap (Tapheads) are active participants in the band's
ever-growing mythology and treat the group as if it were absolutely
real. We know that it's all a joke, but it's much more fun to play
along with the gag.

And before you lecture me any further on Spinal Tap, I suggest you
actually take a look at the FAQ I mantain:

Yes! That's perfect. Either the logo as it's pictured at the top of
the page, or a portrait of the band further down.

I'm not an ascii artist, but I attempted my own Tap logo:

     ______________________________________________________________
    / ________________________________________ _________________/
    | | * * | |

         | || |_| || || |\ \ | / @ \ | |__    | | / @ \ | |_| |
     ____| ||  ___||_||_| \__|/_/ \_\|____|   | |/_/ \_\|  ___|
    |______/| | |_| | |
            |_| |_|

Adequate, but not quite what I'm looking for.

Well, he did mention the FAQ that he maintains, in his responseless post.
So I'm pretty sure he is aware about
Q1: What is Spinal Tap?
(And the answer, probably "This is" :-)

This is just what I was looking for. Thanks kindly. If you don't mind,
I will be adding this to the next version of the Frequently Asked
Questions list, along with a credit for you.

Thanks again.
