How can I create a FORUM just like this one??????

Would neebody know where I can get or make a FORUM or Newsgroup that looks exactly like this one or similar to those of AOL? I've looked just about everywhere on Google and all I can see to find is the "Cacading" type of message board/FORUM and I don't particularly like that format. Any info or lead would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

There's probably already a group about every conceivable topic; you could search Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/) for something of interest. > I've looked just about everywhere on Google and all I can see to find is the > "Cacading" type of message board/FORUM and I don't particularly like that > format. Any info or lead would be greatly appreciated. Thanx There are lots of web based products you could use to run your own forum, like PHPnuke or Slash, but these are generally designed for large sites with their own web servers. What exactly are you intending to do with this forum, and where do you plan to host it? -- Harry Mason ("hjm200.ecs@soton@ac@uk" =~ tr/@./.@/)

There's probably already a group about every > conceivable topic; you could search Google Groups > for something of interest. And if you don't go through the right channels to get your new newsgroup approved, not too many hosts will carry it (look at alt.elf-chicks.rule, the creator just sent out the creation message without geting general admin approval, and not too many hosts carry it, so it's mostly dead (if nobody can post there, you don't have much of a forum)) Out of curiosity, how would you make a newsgroup-like interface for a forum? You'd need java/javascript to do the nested replies wouldn't you? The subscription part of NNTP would be which rooms you want to see updates on, that's cookies and accounts - an anonomous person would have to have a default group of forums they could read/post to (which isn't so bad, but definitely not how NNTP works) I suppose that's why nobody does it, people like me wouldn't bother to turn on javascripting just to read/post. Perhapse if they had two forums linked to the same database, one standard HTML, one with massive Java applet to give you this interphase.... speaking of which, what people see when they look at newsgroups will also vary with the software they're using, so the above was a generalization on how most NNTP clients work. If you just have a group of people you want to get messages to, a mailing list would probably be your best option. You can get them free online (with advertising) or if one of your friends/cohorts has a mail server they could set it up.
Aaaaacccccccckkkkkk! This sounds way too complicated. Basically, I really don't care if my FORUM/Newsgroup (assuming I can build one) is publicly visited. I really want it for a group of ladies, who meet and post at a regular message board on AOL, where I post also, just in case it ever gets shut down or anything else happens. The topic is "Bereaving Our Mothers." So, you can probably understand now why I really don't mind it, if it doesn't get visited or the publicity from everyone. I plan on linking it to my profile or my domain. I just really like this setup and the looks of this newsgroup. I appreciate all your info. Thanx.

I plan to tack it on to my AOL profile or link it on to my domain. Regards, Katherine Sorry due to the insurmountable amount of spamming, my e-mail is blocked.

If all your users are on AOL, why not just create an AOL Group? I can't read the documentation because I'm not an AOL user, but it seems that any user can create a group. -- Harry Mason ("hjm200.ecs@soton@ac@uk" =~ tr/@./.@/)

Tat's ok. There are over 40 THOUSAND news groups, most of which of VERY limited interest. Even more of them were originated by sickys So how do you see these? I use the AGENT email and news reader. There are others that also read news groups. check out http://www.learnthenet.com/english/section/newsgroup.html It has a lot of info on newsgroups. For more info, put "newsgroups" in a search engine (I strongly recommend GOOGLE). If you persist, you will find out everything you every wanted to know about newsgroups...including how to start a new one. Best, Nat Nat...@selfcenturytel.net (please remove yourself to e-mail me. This is required to reduce spam)) >Aaaaacccccccckkkkkk! This sounds way too complicated. Basically, I really >don't care if my FORUM/Newsgroup (assuming I can build one) is publicly >visited. <<Even more of them were originated by sickys So how do you see these?
Natt,
Read about there being 40,000 newsgroups. You mean sickos? If so,
yes...I know. I saw some of their groups...digusting! How did I see these?
You mean how did I happened to find this particular newsgroup? I was looking
up ascii art and happened to see this newsgroup on a guy's webpage. I thought
it was really neat. Thought it was his own message board at first, until
someone told me it was a newsgroup and not a MB. I've bookmarked your post for
future reference. Thanx for the link and all the info.
Regards,
Katherine
<< If all your users are on AOL, why not just create an AOL Group? I really didn't care for the format or its looks. I like it small and easy to get to...like the looks of this newsgroup. Thanx for your post and suggestion. Regards, Katherine

The group can be closed (you decide who gets in) or open to all, and you can view the posts in the "AOL" way (no threads). http://groups.yahoo.com/ Cheers, Emil

Some people have suggested creating a Usenet newsgroup. You could search for an existing newsgroup on that (or a similar) theme and join that, or you might find an empty one that you could use... -- ##### c ^ OO /\\\\ ##### | /|\ `^^^^^^^%-- '||` | \\\\ ####-[.]\ / \ " " \ ha ha ha dd /[.]-\\\| ### _| |_ \\| ### (_ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ _)} == \ / A S C I I A R T C H A T # ||\

Thanx for the link and all the info. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ So it was not his *post* you bookmarked, it was a link inside it? I meant the link to the site you are using to read this newsgroup (or the name of the software). The point that some people have tried to make is that you are talking about how Usenet "looks". The problem with that is that it doesn't. It's just text. How it looks depends entirely on the software used to look at it. Since it's this "look" you are interested in people who want to help are asking you to tell us what it is. You seem to think that you have told us that already but you haven't. Most of us probably don't see what you see. For example, you say that another post is "below" yours. Saying that makes no sense. It could "be" anywhere, or not "be" at all. This is what I see: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/forumlook.gif -- ##### c ^ OO /\\\\ ##### | /|\ `^^^^^^^%-- '||` | \\\\ ####-[.]\ / \ " " \ ha ha ha dd /[.]-\\\| ### _| |_ \\| ### (_ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ _)} == \ / A S C I I A R T C H A T # ||\
Veronica, ...You were the one who came up with a good idea on another post about possibly going into an empty folder and starting from there, for what I would like or going to one similar to it....I didn't realize this. ...Here is a sample of the look I would like, IF I were able to create a forum (sample ---><A HREF="aol://5863:119/mBLA:8677">alt.ascii-art</A>) and this is where I first saw it. I hope the link comes through. I hope you understand that ALL of this (these newsgroups) is very new and foreign to me. I don't know if you have been a member of AOL. At AOL there are message boards a couple to which I belong. Well, the look of those message boards is the very look of these newsgroups, except they're more compact and concise. Well what I would like to create, is a forum, if possible with this type of look. Regards, katarina
