And if you don't go through the right channels to get your new newsgroup 
approved, not too many hosts will carry it (look at alt.elf-chicks.rule, 
the creator just sent out the creation message without geting general 
admin approval, and not too many hosts carry it, so it's mostly dead (if 
nobody can post there, you don't have much of a forum))


Out of curiosity, how would you make a newsgroup-like interface for a 
forum? You'd need java/javascript to do the nested replies wouldn't you?

The subscription part of NNTP would be which rooms you want to see 
updates on, that's cookies and accounts - an anonomous person would have 
to have a default group of forums they could read/post to (which isn't 
so bad, but definitely not how NNTP works)

I suppose that's why nobody does it, people like me wouldn't bother to 
turn on javascripting just to read/post. Perhapse if they had two forums 
linked to the same database, one standard HTML, one with massive Java 
applet to give you this interphase.... speaking of which, what people 
see when they look at newsgroups will also vary with the software 
they're using, so the above was a generalization on how most NNTP 
clients work.


If you just have a group of people you want to get messages to, a 
mailing list would probably be your best option. You can get them free 
online (with advertising) or if one of your friends/cohorts has a mail 
server they could set it up.
