I have just one quick question, what is the maximum a sig should be? I
thought it should never be above 4 or 5 lines, but I don't know...

well, hardcore netters will say 4 lines max...
some now say 5-6 lines...
Personally, I've yet to have a complaint with
any of the larger sigs... However, I agree
with the fact that a large sig is tacky if it is
larger than your total post...

Eudora Lite refuses to accept a sig file longer than 4 lines. . . (I use the
included sig for Usenet, using my offline reader to import it with just a
couple keystrokes. . . :) (It's longer than 4, but I don't feel it's
excessive(I could be wrong, O/C!)

Well here's a reworked version of your sig keeping it in the 4 line and
72 wide guidelines while retaining all the information.

Hope this helps.

I have a small signature file for newsgroups. This (not this group of
course) seems to be where the most anal, humourless bunch of uptight,
rule afflicted people hang out. :)

The generally accepted size is, as you say, 4 or 5 lines. I was in a group
once (though I stopped reading after a few days) where they were getting
techy about putting a space after your -- separator line .. I ask you!

They rekoned that unless it was dash-dash-space it counted as part of the
sig meaning that you were only allowed 3 lines... how stupid.

Most newsgroup regulars aren't this bad, though. Of course in alt.ascii-art
you can have larger sigs. When I'm only subscribed to a.a-a I use my large
sigs but after an unfortunate incident where I accidently used a 15-line sig
in a different newsgroup Iusually keep to my generic one (featured below)
when I'm reading lots of newsgroups.

There is a good reason for this.
If the seperator line is --<cr> then it is not an official sig
seperator -- <cr>
If you have a good news reader you can tell it to remove the sig from
whatever message you're reading. This is why the "standard".

As far as this is concerned, it leaves me confused too.
Basically, a valid sig seperator is dash dash space enter
Anything else is not a "valid sig seperator" so what is below the
supposed sig seperator is considered to be a part of the message, as far
as software for interpreting the message is concerned.

Thanx for the -- tip, I didn't know that much about sigs. I'm kinda new, in
case you didn't know.

This is a sorta half-way proposal that never really got finally
agreed. However, many people stick by it; and my newsreader
will cut after "-- " in generating replies.

Well to me sthe space after the -- is important not for the size of your sig,
but because with that space the newsreader will know it is a sig; and will be
able to treat it in an other way than the rest of the text.
For example my newsreader (slrn) will colorize the sig in red, every line with
a > in violet, the header in green ,etc. It's really more easy to read this
way.
But of course this is not a sufficient reason to agress every person who
has no space after -- or that uses } instead of >. ;-)

Either it's built in or it isn't. TURNPIKE (www.turnpike.com) cuts
signs before replying using that separator.

I've been using Eudora Light for a couple of years and never had this
problem. My current sig is 5 lines and it doesn't get chopped when I
send it or when I save it to the file.

 Nice sig, again looks a bit like llizard's sheep;
I tried the sig-list thing, I'm waiting for it to mail me back.

It could also be used to show the sig in a different colour, or a
different font... (e.g. you could have the message body in a
proportional font that is easy to read and the sig in a monospaced font
which would display any ascii art in the sig correctly).

Well, that just _looks bad_ in long threads. Also it is a bit confusing.
For example, if I know that one specific person uses one specific
character or character combination (other than ">" or "> ") for quoting
then I tend to associate that combination with that person. The
confusing thing about this is that the quoted text is specifically _not_
written by that person. A plain ">" (or "> ") is much easier to read,
IMO (also, my news reader uses a different colour for lines beginning
with a '>', but not for lines beginning with, e.g. ":" or "++").

Ahh well, if it helps you to read it that's ok I suppose - It got on my

In fact, I've just noticed that I'm still using that newsreader -- with the

Oh!!! I thought you were saying that the whole baby carriage looked like
a sheep.

You must be remembering this little scene:

As Joan has indicated before, the smaller the drawing gets, the more
common the permutations. I think that Andreas has used this for a head
too. (")

I personally think it looks like a balloon.

You can set many newsreaders to recognize any number of character combinations
as quote markers, and the freeware NewsXpress that I'm using at the moment
(the linux box went down with a bang) highlights the "|" symbol automatically.

When I get the new linux box (ha ha it's still a P90) online, I'll see if I
can write a slang macro to remove the spaces before the common quote markers.
It's not really ascii art, but I love the look of a long cascade of
nonsequiturs rolling down the page, and I hate to see the pattern ruined by
line breaks. I'll take a few moments to think up a reply, then spend a couple
of minutes reformatting the previous responses so that the cascade is neat
and all the attributes are clearly defined. My wife has suggested I do some
research into "obsessive compulsive disorder" and I don't know why...

Mhmmm... and if I'm aware of that you quote text like that my mind says
"balloo wrote this", and then I get the wrong idea of what your opinion
about something is... I _know_ that you _quoted_ the text, but it's
still confusing. I've often had to re-read posts because of this!!!

So, you have discovered why the ascii art FAQ recommends a very strict
format for anything to qualify as "ascii art":

Of course you care about this! You don't want to send out ugly-looking
posts! I do it too! (and I suspect most people in alt.ascii-art have the
same attitude on this point...)

I use the news reader in Netscape 3 (unix) and it doesn't wrap text that
I quote. Of course, if somebody else has already damaged the look I'll
still end up either doing a major snip or "repairing" things, one line
at a time.... :-/

Please foward the results of any such research to me. I do that, too.

Hmm. Neither do I. I reformat every damn cascade I join in on, even going so
far as to make the attribs look neat and tidy wherever I can.

Heh. Take a look at some of the cascades on the WebCenter; some of them have
been painstakingly reconstructed and restored to their full non-line-break
glory. The BARNEY RAPED MY FAMILY!!!n! cascade, for example, took me forty
minutes to reformat. The Meow 2nd Anniversary Cascade, also, was a real

bitch.

You'll be pleased to know that there's an alt.support.ocd group, so
presumably that's the obsessive compulsive disorder one :)
