Well to me sthe space after the -- is important not for the size of your sig,
but because with that space the newsreader will know it is a sig; and will be
able to treat it in an other way than the rest of the text.
For example my newsreader (slrn) will colorize the sig in red, every line with
a > in violet, the header in green ,etc. It's really more easy to read this 
way. 
But of course this is not a sufficient reason to agress every person who
has no space after -- or that uses } instead of >. ;-)
