I've no idea who that is a picture of, but not because of lack of skill on your
part. That is some nice art-work you did (cool enough to inspire me to post to
group I usually just read). Do you have a page with more pictures? Or
tips/advice on how someone can become that proficient at protraying photos with
text? I've messed around some but as of yet remain unsatisfied with my results.
I am drawn to the medium of ASCII art because of its simplistic and suggestive
beauty. It reminds me of what Leonardo could do with a pencil and paper. A fews
lines here and a slash there and suddenly a form takes shape. Maximum
definition with minimum communication. Simple and powerful.
PS I hope you post the dedicated version here instead of just giving it to the
correct guesser.

To make this pic I used Netscape composer : I put the photo as background and started typing over it. I had to brighten the photo to be able to see the characters over it. Then I simply followed the contours with line-style ascii (the / \ | - ... stuff), made some shading (with ; : .), and drew some bits with solid-style (e.g. lips and lashes). In fact it's not very difficult. Just long ! The only problem with Netscape composer is that it doesn't have an overstrike mode (which is better for ascii : you fill your pic with spaces then simply draw where you want). Gonna post a few trial runs to alt.test first to make sure that it does'nt come out askew. I would gladly welcome all advice/input on my attempt's. I usually squint my eyes every once in awhile when drawing or observing ascii art, this helps define the overall layout and basic shapes. I also noticed when I pointed an out of focus camcorder at an ascii rendition of Mona Lisa the blurred outcome looked strikingly like the orginal painting [startsnip] Er ... You can get the same effect with other programs. The idea is to get a picture and text on the screen at the same time. You can get the same effect using transparent plastic, e.g. a plastic bag or OH film.
