Well, maybe no HTML here, but I know a few newsgroups in which everybody
posts in HTML, because it is needed for the things the newsgroups are
about....never mind, that's irrelevant.

*** HTML warning added and the Ascii Art Ten Commandments ***

Control Codes:
-------------

PLEASE do *NOT* post Colour, Color, Control Codes, HTML or Animation
Codes to ASCII-ART newsgroups - or indeed ANY Internet newsgroup.

It can cause an awful lot of trouble on Net systems worldwide.

If you do wish to post Raw Code then UUENCODE it first !

Colour & Color Control Codes in subject titles and headers should be
avoided entirely.

Extended Character Set:
----------------------

The only Ascii characters which should be posted and used in Ascii
Art are:
               Decimal characters 32 to 127.

The Extended Character Set of Decimal 128 to 255 made by using the
Alt key, and used for ANSI pictures, must be UUENCODED before
posting to the Net and should not be used in ASCII artwork pictures.

The Decimal Characters 0 to 32 are control codes and should not
be used in ASCII artwork.

Here is a chart of ascii characters:

Please do NOT post Colour & Color Control Codes in message headers
and titles.

The problems are due to some Net software recognising the
Raw Code as commands which make the software do unwanted
things and can even cause a system to crash.

Bye,

Well, for one, there is a stationary newsgroup I find interesting, people do
neat stuff with the backgrounds of letters and posts there, it can be very
pretty. There is also a number of newsgroups in which people post
attachments all the time, like pictures, and .exp files in a newsgroup about
a game called creatures, people often trade norns there. Why is this
relevant?

Although someone else asked for the examples, I find it relevant to give
examples of newsgroups where the bright and inevitable future has arrived.
Even if the asciigangsteins keep their closed minds, there are many others on
this newsgroup having more open minds.

This is a wishful thinking driven interpretation.
Freedom on aaa is not the issue.
Isolationism of aaa is the issue.

That is, there will be a constant influx of newcomers to aaa who expect about
the same netiquette as elsewhere on the net and then clash, particularly with
the asciigangsteins, not with me ;-)) It is quite safe to predict that these
clashes will become more and more often as isolationism will distance aaa
further and further away from mainstream.

As I pointed out, there are good means and ways for aaa to go mainstream _and_
preserve ascii pics, which is a source for lively entertainment here on aaa ;-))

The bright and inevitable future arrives in stages. Another example is large
on-line services such as msn, who are also using html already in their
internal mail system and their internal newsgroups.

What newsgroups are those then? Please list them.

It is very relevant.

Most people are not against HTML if used in the correct places,
largely on the Web and Websites.

Usenet newsgroups, unless specially designated otherwise, are
expected to contain only the Ascii characters you can type on your
keyboard in the form of words and messages.

Ascii Art specifically uses those same keyboard characters to form
pictures instead of words and this is explained in the FAQ.

This newsgroup "alt.ascii-art" is totally free and unmoderated and
therefore anyone can post whatever they like here, including HTML,
ANSI etc. but the consequences of using that freedom can be that
some newsgroup readers will object to postings they don't like and
then flamewars often erupt.

The amusing part is that I misread that as "infernal". The disturbing
part is that I didn't find anything odd about it. (that is, until I
noticed who wrote it)

OK so what are the _names_ of the newsgroups where HTML postings are
accepted and encouraged ? Posters here talk about them and fail to
name the groups. :-(

I don't know, I've never seen one. I just commented that the one you
suggested, alt.html is not one of them. :-/

You don't need to force a change in this newsgroup. ASCII is simple.. ASCII is
basic.
ASCII is universal.... it doesn't need the bells

Look, look, look! I thought you proposed and we agreed that you leave me alone
and vice versa. Is your proposal now null and void? Anyway, I might as well
enjoy whatever comes, multiple times in multiple threads even!

You misinterpreted my point. It is not me who forces changes in this
newsgroup, it is mainstream developments who will. Universality of ascii is
crumbling, you can see almost everyday now that people with newer newsgroup
software can't see or post the pics right. (And some can't get it right after
fumbling with the settings)

Nope, it's reality...you have seen countless examples of what

More piffle.

It's the same here as on most all unmoderated newsgroups on the
Net...some try to comply with netiquette...others openly flout it.

How many newsgroups do you actually read besides this one?

It is relevant because it is interesting to know which newsgroups do
actually allow HTML postings but it only helps if you list the
actual newsgroup names e.g.

alt.html
alt.binaries.pictures.*

HTMLised posts might well be appearing in some of the alt.binaries.*
newsgroups.

I'm afraid I cannot identify the groups you have seen HTML in from
descriptions like "stationary newsgroup"; "creatures game
newsgroup" and "a number of newsgroups".

Are you perhaps referring to the K12 hierarchy of newsgroups which is
specifically for schools? Or perhaps groups on Fidonet or Bulletin
Boards rather than Usenet newsgroups?

You missed the point. People are posting non-FAQ compliant articles not
because of the freedom on aaa. People are posting non-FAQ compliant articles
because they do the same things as on other newsgroups.

Well, piffle is not an issue related response. Are you running out of arguments?

Anyway, only aaa requires people to adhere to certain unique things to
preserve the pics, that's what I meant with isolationism of aaa.

NO! If you post html to alt.html you will get soooooooo F-L-A-M-E-D!
That group is _about_ html, not _in_ html! (been there, seen that
happen, done some of the flaming myself...)

> alt.binaries.pictures.*

In those groups you'll get flamed if you post too much _text_ (happened
to me - one lady even claimed to have _killfiled_ me for it...). The
people there want _pictures_, not text. I suspect html and plain-text
are both equally off-topic in those groups...

Look Colin, the real issue is NOT what appears as the discussion topics. You
are addressing the wrong issue altogether in this and other threads. I wrote
about the real issue in the past and proposed "ignore each other" as far back
as a year ago.

(Yes, this is contrary to what you and the asciigangsteins are saying about me
being a troll. On the contrary, the asciigangsteins declined and the "ignore
each other" proposal at the time. Spunkystein reinvented the same proposal
recently, even said in a separate thread that she killfiled me. I thought we
had a mutual agreement, but then she "responded' to a posting that was in no
way directed to her. Other asciigangsteins are no better. -- And I am not
someone who leaves personal insults unresponded.)

You said: "The devils you know are better than the devils you don't." Well, in
case you refer to yourself as a good devil, then try enforcing an "ignore each
other" rule. It is the most effective way to prevent flare ups.

So good devil Colin, what do you say?

>So, to reiterate...apart from your stein cartoons, which I don't
>personally object to...what have you done to improve this newsgroup
>which so many enjoy...including yourself in your own way?

Well, the Yangsteins love the 'steins. For example, there was yet another
'stein emulation just two days ago (which I awarded with 4 Frogsteins :-))
What greater contribution can there be than postings that people enjoy so much
that they want to emulate?

Haha, it can't withstand even newer email and newsgroup software. ascii may be
simple and basic, but newer software are going beyond simple and basic, well,

there have been some clever things done, like veronica's 'no html' thing
that said one thing in ascii and another in html, pete's half-space
stuff, etc.
maybe there should be an html-art group? if there is any interest i'll
review the new news group voting rules [it's easier to get a group picked
up & propagated if you do the formal stuff i'm told.].
maybe we can promote 'pure' ascii as well as 'bright future' art?

Oh come off it Pete. Apart from your cartoons, what have you done
to help this newsgroup "alt.ascii-art"?

Your main aims appear to be to:

- promote the use of HTML and encourage all attempts to do so here.

- applaud newcomers like Mehta who post offensive messages and
poohpooh the FAQs and Usenet Netiquette.

- encourage schoolgirls like Sarah to continue to post without
due regard to FAQs and good posting procedures.

- attempt to stir up arguments which you so clearly enjoy, find
entertaining and wish to continue as long as people will engage
in them. That is a hallmark of a Newsgroup Troll. Many newsgroups
have them, some Trolls are resident others are transient.

When have you ever suggested to a newcomer that they should read and
study the FAQs before continuing to post articles here?

So, to reiterate...apart from your stein cartoons, which I don't
personally object to...what have you done to improve this newsgroup
which so many enjoy...including yourself in your own way?

checking a bit i find a top level hierarchy 'html' [like alt, soc, free, etc]
for posting in html might be in the works. so maybe we hold on the new group
for now until that's decided.

Wow! That sounds like a lot of newsgroups to post "bright future" art to!

According to you, and Sarah Day, there are plenty of those newsgroups
already but you both fail to name them despite requests to do so. :-(

So come on now Pete...either put-up...or shut-up!

This is the first time I've seen this post of yours...my newsfeed is
very flakey here right now and it looks today (Wednesday) that a big
load of articles have been lost in a news-server crash...happens
from time to time all over the Net. :-(

I use my own judgement and selection of the relevant issues not what
_you_ might consider are the real issues.

Sorry, but I don't think you _do_ wish to be ignored. On the
contrary your posts throughout your time on this newsgroup show that
you crave attention and enjoy argument and flamewars.

In any case I use my own judgement of the relevant issues not what
_you_ think those issues are...so there...Hah!

> (Yes, this is contrary to what you and the asciigangsteins are

But so many of the things you write when you get attacked have all
the classic hallmarks of a Troll...that's why you get called a Troll.
Did you not see the Troll FAQ I posted here not long ago?

> On the contrary, the asciigangsteins declined and the "ignore each
> other" proposal at the time.

I realise I am repeating myself but the way I see it is that you do
not really wish to be ignored. You appear to want everyone to accept
your views and say nothing if they do not like those views. Some
people are willing to do just that and others are not. If everyone
totally ignores your postings then you become isolated and cannot
possibly enjoy it here.

In fact you must begin to wonder whether they have seen or read your
postings...like this very example where you were saying I had not
responded...now that is a dead giveaway that you _Don't_ want to be
ignored here.

So I guess you cannot have your cake and eat it Pete!

> Spunkystein reinvented the same proposal recently, even said in a
> separate thread that she killfiled me.

Look, you are going to win no friends or influence people by calling
them "Spunkystein" or "Anyothernamestein". Several people in the past
have told you that they do not like you doing it but you continue to do it.
What's your point in doing it except to stir up bad feeling? - one
of the hallmarks of a Troll.

Joan Stark earns respect here because of her work not because of her
personal viewpoints. I do not think she is a person who would engage
in any agreement to refrain from expressing her views about how
anyone behaves on this newsgroup.

> You said: "The devils you know are better than the devils you
> don't." Well, in case you refer to yourself as a good devil,...

I was tempted to diddle your cartoon on the spur of the moment and
use a very old cliche " The Devil you know is better than the Devil
you don't. " I did not intend it to have a hidden meaning or that
the two Devils represented people who read alt.ascii-art.

>...then try enforcing an "ignore each other" rule. It is the most

There is no way of enforcing anything on the Net. People either get
along with each other or they don't!

> So good devil Colin, what do you say?

I think I've already said enough above...and remember I am not
obliged to respond to _any_ of your posts...I can just ignore them
if I so choose and you have the same privilege.

Only someone that doesn't know what ASCII code is would make such a
statement.

The problem is not the code but those that don't know how to use it or the
computers that depend on it. In other words, you need to know more than
where the "ON" switch is located for your computer.

This is posted from two connected computers that depend on ASCII code.
They also don't know what to do with graphic codes, and I like it that way

There was indeed one constructive aspect, the "Call for evidence" with the
related discussions.

Not sure about winning friends, you stirred up a lot of old dust out of their
original context.

Oh well, I'm not going to nickel and dime those things.

Just open your eyes and see the html postings here on aaa with you objecting

objecting to them <big grin>

(This does not mean that I recommend posting in html on aaa right now. On the

does not happen because I or anyone else recommends that, but because
newsgroup (and email) software is going that way. I know, I know, I repeat

Well, it seems that it is you who should either put-up or shut-up. That is
easier to do if you drop your selective perception.

Re-read what I said viz: "What greater contribution can there be than postings

'stein cartoons!

Reminds me of the job applicant who put just two words in his resume: Nobel

the same things all over again <SIGH>

... and the seesaw continues ...

Let me assure you, Colin, that I have been tired since over a year with the
kind of attention that you and the asciigangsteins are giving me.

(... and of course, I have been returning the same kind of attention to you
and the asciigangsteins, what do you expect?)

Well, I indeed thought that you finally came up with something constructive in
your last posting in this thread ...

Perhaps the asciigangsteins should engrave my name in their killfiles and keep
it there for all eternity. That should be constructive ...

In that case Pete perhaps it's time for you to retire before you are
too tired to enjoy your retirement! :-)

And perhaps it is time that I too retired and went into hiding to
trouble you no more. <Aaaw!>

Whatever, over the past few days I have given you some very intensive

What I want either you or Sarah Day to do, or indeed anyone, is write
down a list of the NAMES of the Usenet newsgroups which accept and
encourage the posting of HTML in discussion groups.

Veronica has said that HTML causes flames if posted in
alt.binaries.* newsgroups or alt.html which I thought may be willing to
accept them...but apparently the readers in those newsgroups object
to HTML postings just as strongly as other newsgroups object to HTML in
those groups.

So I repeat...put-up a list of the NAMES of the Usenet newsgroups which
currently accept and encourage HTML postings or if you do not have
any names of newsgroups then shut-up!

Bye,

I'm sorry, I thought you just wanted names of html using groups for ascii,
which I know none of. I know of stationary newsgroups, and such, however.
Did you want to know the names of them? Sorry again.
    Sarah

Sorry. :^( Well, for one, there is (warning: long name)
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.outlookexpress.stationary Everybody posts
html there, well, most everybody, anyway. Sorry again. Forgive me? I didn't
want to get in an argument.

Couldn`t it be alt.ascii-art.html or something? To keep it with this group in an
alphabetical list? Then maybe we could have alt.ascii-art.html.animation for
JavaScript anims.

Why? There already is alt.ascii-art.animation, which isn't exactly
over-crowded...
