Even within the 7-bit protocol there are problems.  If you stick to the
range ' ' (space = 32) to '~' (tilde = 126) then you should be OK.  And you
will of course need some sort of line feed, but those are different on PC's,
Mac or UNIX, so just use what your editor gives you when you hit <return>.
Tabs will be transmitted OK, but will probably be interpreted differently 
by other terminals, so your lovely artwork will get messed.  If you have
non-ASCII funnies on your keyboard like Pound signs (a big hello to Mac users
everywhere!), then check the byte value.
