It is not true that ascii is tied hand and feet to its medium. On the
contrary, true is that ascii can use myriads and myriads and myriads of media
which is part and parcel of its universality claim.

(We were not talking about data transmission, BTW, we were talking about
rendering ascii code in a variety of media.)
