Not quite, Flintstein.

Back in the 60ties ASCII was designed for transmitting data in 7-bit mode.
For telex I think it was... The idea was to shove 7 bits into the network
and get 7 bits out at the receiving end.

Like this:
                             ,-------------.
                             | ) = 0101001 |
                             `-------------'
    ____
  _(    )  ___________         ____________           ___________
 (     )  | _________ |       |            |         | _________ |
(_   ) _) ||         ||       |   0101001  |         ||         ||
  (____)  ||    )    ||       |__/______,__|         ||    )    ||
  O       ||         ||         /        \           ||         ||
 o        ||_________||  _____  \   _____/   _____   ||_________||
_____     |       ___ | |     |  \ /        |     |  |       ___ |
_  _ \    |_=_________| |     |   \         |     |  |_=_________|  ___
 \( \| _   |_________|  |     |__/ \_____   |     | _ |_________|  /  /
  -_);' \ /        |    |     |          \__|     |/ \___/   \   _| ) )__
  [_____|/         |    0101001             0101001           \__| \_/   \
                   \___/|     |             |     |              |_______|
                        |_____|             |_____|

Now, when you turn our cute little left parenthesis into a gif before you
transmit it, the network has a slightly bigger problem congesting it.

Agreed, applying a 3D vs. 2D metaphor to 7-bit vs. 8-bit data transmission
might be a little confusing. But the main idea - ascii-art being tied hand
and feet to its medium - isn't irrelevant at all. That's a plain fact.
