This one brings up a good point, something that you kinda pointed out. Most kanji are made up of what they call "radicals," or little parts (usually other, distinct kanji). Sometimes you can get a clue about the meaning or how to pronounce a certain character by looking at these radicals and trying a reading that you may have seen before with the same radical. A lot of times it works, a lot of times it doesn't. It's a crap shoot. Anyway, I've named the radicals in the character above for you. Any good kanji dictionary should have characters listed by radical or at least offer a reading or name for the radicals so that you can understand them better. Japanese is very annoying in the fact that there are many many ways to say the same thing but just with different implications -- but by the same token, it's a very expressive language. If you pick up any shosetsu (small books sold everywhere in Japan -- it's a very literate country, mind you), you'll see a lot of authors use diverse characters to gain the exact meaning they want.
