The artform of creating pictures with a typewriter ought
to be called "typewriter art" (and it is).

The artform of creating pictures with ASCII characters
(those listed in the' American Standard Code of Information
Interchange') ought to be called "ASCII art" (and is).

The artform of creating pictures with keyboard characters
ought to be called "keyboard art". (that would include any
text-pictures made with non-standard characters.)

In all above cases, the picture (aka art) is text-based and
probably could be considered as "text-graphics" or as "text-art".

When you go beyond using text characters to create a
picture, it is no longer characterized as any of the above.
It may be a gif... It may be a jpg... It may be something else.
but it is no longer text. Perhaps it started out as text--
but it is no longer.

ie: someone creates a sculpture ... it is a 3D medium.
Someone then takes a picture of it... it is now a 2D
representation of a 3D artform. Quite different.
