.----- On Wed, 23 Sep 1998 05:26:18 GMT, Pete Casso posted: |MY point is that you always need to display the invisible ascii code to view |ascii art. And to me, it doesn't matter whether you display it on the screen, |or print it out, or through a .txt file, or through a gif file, etc. The |decisive point here, is that the display actually shows what the ascii artist |has created (with ascii code.) | '------------------ Not with ascii *code*, but with ascii *characters*, or more precisely a particular font's interpretation of what image goes with that ascii number code. I believe that those who want to view ascii art will have to put up with a fixed width font, and those that don`t care can keep their Arial or Helvetica or whatever. In Free Agent (which is what I am using) a simple right-click on the message and you can choose between Fixed-Width and Propertional fonts. This is no difficult task, and most other newsreaders can do the same. Just because one or two mail/news clients choose to use proportional fonts, that does not mean that the older clients are now out of date and invalid. Many operating systems are still running on text-based screens and so they have a fixed-width font *only*. Just because Microshite made a mail client that thinks it knows everything about how people want their messages displayed, and assumes that that single-space at the start of the line was an accident, does not mean that we need to render our postings unweildingly large and unsuitable for 90% (I believe that was the figure this thread has been using) of users who have a 'proper' newsreader and not some 'idiot's guide to the internet' newsreader/email client combination that thinks it`s a web browser.
