I have released the new version 4.0 of my freeware ascii art editor JavE. Check it out: http://www.jave.de And don't forget to tell me what you think about it! New Features include: * New user interface for tools (hope you like it) * Selection Tool now supports freehand selection - any shape! * add/remove characters to/from selection by holding down shift/crtl-key * improved result with line style in generic tools * New image2ascii-algorithms "Edge Tracing" and "Edge Detect" * Command line interface to use JavE's image2ascii w/o gui * ...and many many more! For a detailed list of news have a look at: http://www.jave.de/docs/history.txt Have fun! Does anyone have any experience running JavE under linux? I am running linux kernel 2.4.18 on Slackware 8.0. I have the newest JRE from Sun, and just downloaded this new release of JavE (and the figlet fonts). I put everything into said directories. I get a whole bunch of errors to my shell like this: Font specified in font.properties not found [--symbol-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific] The JavE documentation said this is ok and to ignore it though, so I am doing so. Once JavE starts up, I get a little window saying "Now starting..." etc. It loads some thing (says that it is) and then I get a single window on my screen that is freehand generator or something. It has a "Mode" drop-down box, and a box to select Style and Size (both are greyed out though) as well as a checkbox for Mix. I've checked the jave docs and so far havent found a solution, I am going to continue searching, if anyone has ideas, I would appreciate it. Thanks. It should appear in front of the main window - which does not show up on your system. I once have been reported the same problem with a much earlier version of JavE. The problem was that the main window had a position outside of the screen and so was not visible. I think this was caused by the window manager, that is responsible for positioning windows when they show up. However once JavE has been started and exited, it saves its size and position to a file called jave.ini located in the JavE program folder. You can look there for the following lines: [editor] ypos=50 xpos=30 height=588 width=720 When there are very huge values for xpos or ypos or negative values, the main window is positioned outside of the screen. When there is no jave.ini yet, you can create it and put the lines above inside. Maybe it then will show up correct. You can also try to change your window manager - on linux systems it should be possible to switch between them easily. If it still does not work I have no idea about what goes wrong. What JRE do you use, the new 1.4 or 1.3? Regards, Markus -- \-/ http://www.jave.de O_< Get JavE4.0 now! \-/ J|a|v|E /| J|a|v|E /-\ Ascii-Art for eyeryone / \ - for free! /-\
