When I view the ascii art as it is received, it is in the correct format. But when I view it after saving, either as text or unencoded text, the formatting has changed the picture. I use a Mac Performa. Any thoughts on why this happens? bill

Open a copy of your terminal program / newsreader and look for the 'font' and 'fond' sections. Open those up and copy them one at a time to your 'System' file. Then you should have the same 'terminal' font now availible in your system file... Whenever someone posts to this group they always quote the entire message. I usually delete it. Should I leave it on for any reason? (is it better for UNIX newsreaders?)

Should I leave it on for any reason? (is it better for UNIX >newsreaders?) No, it's just common courtesy; sometimes people aren't sure whether their messages went through correctly, or can't see them in their newsreader, so it's nice to quote at least a bit of their original message when replying. Also, it gives other readers a more clear idea of what you're talking about. At least, I know it always helps me. It is annoying, though, in my opinion, when people quote long messages in their entirety and then respond with only a couple sentences of their own. How bothersome. :*/ --Clover, who's probably guilty of this, too. -- __ ,=. ,=" "==.__.=" o".___ ___ _ ,=.=." ___/ / __| |_____ _____ _ _ ,==.," \ \ ,==="" | (__| / o\ V / -_) '_| > ,==.==,"'"=\_/====" \___|_\___/\_/\___|_| `==' @easystreet.com

Also, remember that this is alt.ascii-art. Often the message you reply to contains just a picture, or a picture with a few short comments. Then there may be many _lines_ of text, but it may still feel relevant to quote the entire thing. I don't see why unix news readers would be different from other news readers though. -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.' n...@spam.please.com (Arcain) writes: > > Whenever someone posts to this group they always quote the entire message. I > usually delete it. Properly one on all newsgrouops (and mailing lists and private mail) should quote enough for the reader to recognize what post/mail one is following on from, and preferably also to what part of it one is responding. The "what part" is the problematic one for a.a-a, because posts often do not contain discussions but rather just one bit of artwork. Cutting it down to an small bit that captures its point is difficult. So full quotes are accepted here. I do though find it annoying though, due to being used to consise quoting on other groups. But I am getting used to it. I would still like it if people were a bit more consise. > Should I leave it on for any reason? (is it better for UNIX > newsreaders?) Actually nothing to do with Unix. Rather it is for non-threaded news-readers. In these the user does not see an threaded view, rather they just get all posts of one thread ordered by time. So the do not see what othe rpost a post is following up from. Such readers are far more common than generally thought, because lots of old stuff is still in use (particularly by a.a-a readers) and because some people dislike threaded view and so switch it off even where it is available. Threading can lead to many-generation followups written after other side branches being sorted before them, and so the reader sees stuff that may side reference posts not yet read, this confuses or annoys some readers, particularly long time ones. Later the older side line has an deja-vu feeling to it. -- Neil Franklin, Nerd, Geek, Unix Wizzard and Guru, Hacker, Mystic nei...@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Computer: toy that speeds work, so you have more time to play with it
Yes. know what I'm talking about?? probably not. That's why you ought to include some part of the referring post. >Message-id: <6ua...@chonsp.franklin.ch> >> Whenever someone posts to this group they always quote the entire message. >I >> usually delete it. >> Should I leave it on for any reason? -joan -- _.-----._ * .' .-'``|'. * / / -*- \ joan stark | ; <{ | ; | spu...@juno.com -*- | _\ | | -*- | ; _\ -*- | ; | \ \ | -*- / ASCII ART GALLERY: * jgs '._ '.__ |_.' http://www.ascii-art.com '-----'

I just meant that UNIX command-line newsreaders would be the most likely ones not to show threads. All the readers I've seen can do threads, but there aren't any text readers installed on my UNIX box so I can't try them out. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. You are joking, right? 8-))) Ever tried a look at slrn [1] or trn, just to name 2 that does it? And I was told that there is a newsreader called pan or so using the gtk-widget set that can even handly multi-part binaries really well (although, slrn can do that also and pan is a graphical interface and not text reader). If you don't believe just take a look at the screenshots at the slrn [1] page - btw: slrn is also available for win32 *smirks* So long! Yeah, this was the original meaning; then the one that I mentioned. I don't know about the 'freak' part of it, so I'm gonna check OED. Ok, here's OED's take on it (a bit lengthy) I. Simple uses. 1. slang (chiefly U.S.). a. orig. Eng. regional (north.). A person, a fellow, esp. one who is regarded as foolish, offensive, worthless, etc. 1876 F. K. ROBINSON Gloss. Words Whitby, Gawk, Geek, Gowk or Gowky, a fool; a person uncultivated; a dupe. 1908 H. C. GLAZEBROOK Madolescents 173 The Elbow's heaving with bimboids and geeks who work in banks and stuff. b. Freq. depreciative. An overly diligent, unsociable student; any unsociable person obsessively devoted to a particular pursuit (usually specified in a preceding attrib. noun). Cf. NERD n. 1957 J. KEROUAC Let. 1 Oct. in Sel. Does anyone actually call/connect to BBSes anymore? Or is this a whole new generation? Ascii/ANSI art overtook the BBS scene back in the early 90s till now even, even though the BBS scene is much smaller than it once was. Just wondering if this is where anyone originated from or anything, cuz that'd be cool. :) Access Denied +o The Pharcyde Website: http://pharcyde.ath.cx BBS: telnet://pharcyde.ath.cx
