I had some spare time this afternoon so here are some ascii's I have
made. I just intended to make a signature with some traffic in it. But I
kept expanding the basic car I made.

This is just my second attempt at ascii's so if you have any comments or
suggestions please let me know. (Especially at the motorcycle I think it
can be improved)

Here they are:

Well, in any case it's too big. But a 3-line motorcyclist is very difficult. Anyway,
I failed.

This is me hurrying to work on an ordinary bycycle - checking my watch cos i'm late

Your vehicles are wonderful. I especially like the car and caravan. But
I think your motorcycle looks more like a jockey racing on a muddy
track.

:) Very good! Splenid 3(!) lines jockey!

But take away his horse and he looks not
very speedy any more:

And back to traffic. In a few seconds this poor
old man (who used to be a jockey when he was young)
will still be on that zebra crossing but -alas- maybe
not in the same state:

Thank you Andreas, I can't remember the last time I've fallen on the
floor laughing.

Your old man reminds me of the old lady I drew two years ago when
someone asked for some "moving ascii".

/[please, can you help me take care of my children?]
  O
/|\_ O+ -[here you go, this is all that I have]
 \| $ _/\
  |\ f /|
  | | | \\ ejm 96

Maybe she'd like to visit your old man in the hospital.

             ?

                  f /|
                  | \~\

Poor fellow didn't see what was coming and even though that MOOK! MOOK!
was so loud, he didn't hear because he was on his way to getting new
batteries for his hearing aid. and now he has to lie immobilized with
his leg in one of those slings and his mouth in a silent constant scream
of agony.

Is this one better than my rice burner? It is based on a picture of an

What DO you mean, too wide??? You have heard of alteration...

I'll make it fit a 72 wide line:

Here, the bike is driving on the side of the road (much safer in such a

Yes, but those things are hard to come by, and very expensive to
maintain (bribing the military to get parts), so I switched to a much
cheaper solution:

   _____
 _/__|_,\__ aaaah _O
|,-.___,-. ) _____ _o' @ __ (`
( O ) ( O ) _/__|_,\__ /` __( `> ____|_,\_ |>
,`-'/_~`-'/) |,-.___,-._) /> )-.)/\-. |,-.___,-.| ,|.
`===---===-'  `-'   `-'       `-'  `-'  `-'   `-'  `-'

(traffic jams caused by unicyclists, very common here in holland)

Only problem I have are trucks and busses, that's the times when I miss
the firepower of my previous mode of transportation.

Surely you mean "ngstrm"? That would be "Aangstroem", not "Aengstrom"
(which would be "ngstrom"), if you were to write it without .

these are the "fast lanes" :)

(*1) with cycle-track my dictionary meant a special drive lane for bikes
(*2) with cycling-track my dictionary meant such an oval racing track on
which cycle races take place.

i hope i used these terms correctly; i hope i'm comprehensible at
all...

No, more like the vowel in the word "for" (as spoken by a very English
person).

More like the "i" in "bird" (same very English person saying it).

And before you ask, the third one the , or "ae" is a bit like the sound
a sheep makes, "b".

By alteration, I meant "diddling". (I don't know why, but I have a
horror of that word.)

Seemed clear to me. I call them cycle lanes and cycle paths (cycle lane
is lane set aside on the road marked for bicycles only; cycle path is a
special road at the side of the road and/or through parks that is for
bicycles only). We have both in Toronto. And it's the same here. A
bicycle is MUCH faster during rush hour than any other vehicle.

AUGH!! I clicked on "send" by mistake before I was ready. I was going to
say:

Many thanks to Marijn Kampf for the use of his truck and cars.

And that my parade is too long to show both directions of traffic. I
also should explain that to add to the confusion, there were several
cows milling about. The noise was spectacular - brass band honking, cars
beeping, people shouting and/or singing depending on which direction
they were going and the market stalls on the sides of the road still
doing a booming business selling vegetables, bolts of cloth, pots and
pans, etc. etc.

Thank you Joan. And it's very large (for me) too!! I'm usually
attrocious at large pictures.

I'm now in the process of animating this little horse. I've just about
finished the galloping on the spot sequence and will soon have him move
across the page.

Yes, I was laughing myself and I've hoped that you like it
too. At least you _see_ the picture. Other people start
to talk about 'deciphering' asciis. Decipher?? :(

:) Now THAT's the right name for the 'ascii symbol' c : 'silent constant
scream of agony'!

Maybe your friendly old lady even wants to help him getting

wow! Swedish lessons on the Usenet.

    q:^G

Is the "Aangstroem" with "Aa" like in "mouth wide open, tongue held down by
a piece of wood and make a sound cos de doctor wants to examine your
throat"?
And is the "oe" like in "you"? The "Aangstroem" would match Dutch spelling
then.

  (part of) CHAPTER VIII
OF THE GOOD FORTUNE WHICH THE VALIANT DON QUIXOTE HAD IN THE
TERRIBLE AND UNDREAMT-OF ADVENTURE OF THE WINDMILLS, WITH OTHER
OCCURRENCES WORTHY TO BE FITLY RECORDED
-

AT THIS point they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that
there are on that plain, and as soon as Don Quixote saw them he said
to his squire, "Fortune is arranging matters for us better than we
could have shaped our desires ourselves, for look there, friend Sancho
Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants present themselves, all
of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we
shall begin to make our fortunes; for this is righteous warfare, and
it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of
the earth."
  "What giants?" said Sancho Panza.

"Those thou seest there," answered his master, "with the long
arms, and some have them nearly two leagues long."
"Look, your worship," said Sancho; "what we see there are not giants
but windmills, and what seem to be their arms are the sails that
turned by the wind make the millstone go."

"It is easy to see," replied Don Quixote, "that thou art not used to
this business of adventures; those are giants; and if thou art afraid,
away with thee out of this and betake thyself to prayer while I engage
them in fierce and unequal combat."

So saying, he gave the spur to his steed Rocinante, heedless of
the cries his squire Sancho sent after him, warning him that most
certainly they were windmills and not giants he was going to attack.
He, however, was so positive they were giants that he neither heard
the cries of Sancho, nor perceived, near as he was, what they were,
but made at them shouting, "Fly not, cowards and vile beings, for a
single knight attacks you."

A slight breeze at this moment sprang up, and the great sails
began to move, seeing which Don Quixote exclaimed, "Though ye flourish
more arms than the giant Briareus, ye have to reckon with me."
So saying, and commending himself with all his heart to his lady
Dulcinea, imploring her to support him in such a peril, with lance
in rest and covered by his buckler, he charged at Rocinante's
fullest gallop and fell upon the first mill that stood in front of
him; but as he drove his lance-point into the sail the wind whirled it
round with such force that it shivered the lance to pieces, sweeping
with it horse and rider, who went rolling over on the plain, in a
sorry condition.

Sancho hastened to his assistance as fast as his
ass could go, and when he came up found him unable to move, with
such a shock had Rocinante fallen with him.
"God bless me!" said Sancho, "did I not tell your worship to mind
what you were about, for they were only windmills? and no one could
have made any mistake about it but one who had something of the same
kind in his head."

"Hush, friend Sancho," replied Don Quixote, "the fortunes of war
more than any other are liable to frequent fluctuations; and
moreover I think, and it is the truth, that that same sage Friston who
carried off my study and books, has turned these giants into mills
in order to rob me of the glory of vanquishing them, such is the
enmity he bears me; but in the end his wicked arts will avail but
little against my good sword."
