Does anyone actually do ascii art for living 
as a professional artist?

soul demands him to.

The answer to your question is no.
Though I thought about it the other day and came to the conclusion that a
ascii-artist would be very handy for making the tele-text (Text-TV) pages seen
on european TV ( NTSC does not leave some of the bandwidth unused so unlike PAL
it can't transmit tele-text .. so most americans dont know what this is)

You can browse DR1 & DR2 (Two of the primary danish TVchannels) TextTV by
browsing to :
http://www.dr.dk/nav/tekstttv/ttv.asp?side=100&kanal=dr1

The biggest frame contain the TextTV pages , you browse it by clicking a page
number or entering one in the field called "G� til side [____]"

It contains news , sport , weatherinfo , a TV guide , a radio guide .. etc
Some of the pages contain little images made with the limited charset available
for TextTV (although it's not as limited as ASCII)

Can you think of other jobs a ascii-artist would be perfect for ?

Teletext is transmitted in the vertical blanking retrace time slot,
which in both PAL and NTSC is 1/5 of the time (the other 4/5 is picture).

The reason the leftpondians do not have Teletext ist same reason why
they are behind in mobile phones and particularly SMS: instead of one
standard available everywhere and used by everyone they fragmented the
market.

Different stations send different stuff in the VBR and TV makers do
not decode any of them, leaving this to various different specialised
settop boxes that are extra buys and so are not universal.
